Autumn Festival of Museums @ Veszprém – PartTwo – 2019.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Autumn Festival of Museums – October, 8. – November, 10. 2019.

This year the Blessed Gizella  Archdiocese Collection will be implemented during the Autumn Festival of Museums nationwide program series. Keep in mind that four outstanding Italian centerRome, Kingdom of Naples, Bologna and the Republic of Venice painting exhibition can be viewed in the Blessed Gizella Collection, from the 17th and 18th century collection showing Italian Baroque painting and graphic material, the works of Luca Giordano and Solimena of Naples, Piazzetta of Venice, and masterpieces of Roman caravaggist artists.

In addition to the huge material selection of arts, can be seen other historical art collections barrowed from other Hungarian museums.

The Right of the Bishops of Veszprém to Crown the Queens!

The bishopric of Veszprém is presumably the oldest of the ten bishoprics founded by St. Stephen and it is certain that it existed as early as 1001.The Cathedral of Veszprém was founded by Queen Gizella, and her crown was kept in the Cathedral until 1207. Queen Gizella came from Bavaria. Her crown was kept in the cathedral, but King András II took it with him when he went on a Crusade to the Holy Land in 1217, and he sold it in the course of his travels. The right of the bishops of Veszprém to crown the queens was an ancestral right sanctioned by tradition. The bishops of Veszprém were also the Chancellors of the Queen, and they listed this among their titles until 1946. Between 1392 to 1773 the bishops were the Lord Lieutenants of Veszprém. Her crown was kept in the cathedral, but King András II took it with him when he went on a Crusade to the Holy Land in 1217, and he sold it in the course of his travels. The right of the bishops of Veszprém to crown the queens was an ancestral right sanctioned by tradition. Until the 16th century, the coronation of the queens was performed by touching the queen’s right shoulder with the Holy Crown. Later, in the Habsburg Era, the so-called domestic crown and the Hungarian Holy Crown were in use.

Following the submission of a proposal by the Blessed Gizella Archdiocese Collection, in 2014 the committee of the Municipal Value Inventory Committee of Veszprém declared the right of the bishops of Veszprém to crown the queens as part of the intangible cultural heritage of the city of Veszprém.

In 1772, the precentor János György Tejfalussy (Milchdorfer) had built the Tejfalussy canon house to the immediate north of the Franciscan monastery. The main Baroque building, the arched rooms and staircase of which show the original condition, was constructed on the double castle wall, presumably on the site of two earlier Baroque buildings. The building has three stories, while on the street front it is two-storied. The ecclesiastical treasury, which is the second richest collection of the Hungarian ecclesiastical treasuries, consisting of around 5,000 pieces.

Blessed Gizella Archdiocese Collection – The Saint George Chapel …According to the medieval chronicles, Prince Saint Imre took a vow of chastity in the round, Romanesque-style chapel, which was built in the 10th and 11th centuries. The relic of the head of Saint George, which King Saint Stephen was given by the Byzantine emperor, was also kept here. The chapel was also a chapter house, and indeed according to a charter that was issued in 1417 it was also the site for the elections of bishops. It was also a place of pilgrimage, to which Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg traveled in 1401.

Within the Blessed Gizella Archdiocese Collection “From Naples to Venice” two centuries of Italian Baroque paintings from the 17th and 18th Century can be discovered at the exhibition held between May, 7. to November, 10. 2019. Time is certainly short, but those in interest to these breathtaking arts and painting be sure to make previous provisions at the Archiepiscopal Palace ( 16. Vár Street) for the Tejfalussy Cannon House ( 35. Vár Street) – Info: boldoggizella@gmail.com

One of the symbols of the town stands on the highest peak of Veszprém, the  Fire Tower – The Castle’s one and only tower from medieval times, the so-called Barbican … the present Fire Tower.  The Fire Tower firstly built as a watchtower, but later was rebuilt to alarm in case of fire. Climbing up to the top on a narrow, spiral stairway is worthwhile to have an unforgettable view on the city. Every hour the clock of the tower plays ‘conscription music’ composed by the Veszprém composer Antal Csermák. There is a wonderful view of the landscape of Veszprém from the balcony of the tower. Permanent exhibition introduces the history of the Fire Lookout Tower. Visitors can see copies of the documents found after the renovations  held between 1814 – 1891. Exhibited the original metal document storage cylinders and the coins found there, as well as other interesting photos and descriptions about the history of the monument. The entrance ticket to the Fire lookout Tower is valid for this exhibition, too.

There is so much to see, that a full day is needed to admire treasures of the History Arts at Veszprém.

Last but not least, thanks to the professional experts who led the way to explore, taking part in the adventure of these two  major cities Székesfehérvár and Veszprém. This kind of joint cultural festival with all its programs is suitable and encourages everyone to get on the road in any city of the country … look in a museums … seek a hidden treasure and when leaving need not have to have a second thought that Hungary is the source of miracles.
