“NOT AN ORDINARY LIFE” – Les Hody – European basketball champion and Olympian!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

NOT AN ORDINARY LIFE  – László Hódy  (Les Hody) a compelling and adventurous autobiography of a European basketball champion and Olympian for both Hungary and Australia.

This remarkable life story unfolds in Hungary, a country caught up in frightening political and social issues throughout the 1940’s and 50’s. During the 1956 revolution against the communist dictatorship, at age 22, Les escaped and became a refugee to Australia.

A couple of days ago on the occasion of his book release at the press gathering the „Gold Team” players and family members of some former players and elder fans who cheered at his  goals had a chance to breathe the same air with him at the Lake Városliget Café in Budapest. He was touched by the high number of audience to have had arrived.

Spoke about getting down to write his lifeline book. As said, the memories just sparked as he has touched his pen alike he use to play on the basketball track to punch the net. László (Les) added Q.:  „It has taken me the good part of six months to rewrite my biography in Hungarian. But finally, I can say I put a full stop at the end and I passed the manuscript over to Dezső Dobor in Hungary, who was editing it for the publisher. The Hungarian Basketball Federation offered to sponsor the publication of Les’s autobiography, “Not an Ordinary Life”

From class enemy to the Hall of Fame and a lifetime in between, in Hungarian.

As he was speaking we could hear a man talking how his life was shaped by courage, goodwill, diligence, most of all love. What was really heartwarming to be present together with  László (Les) Hódy,  to see the presence of some Hungarian basketball champs and former players family members and of course seeing those individuals who brought old pictures to sign + autographs, era’s basketball sporty yearbooks, and a bunch of media and press representatives.

The sparkles lightened the long gone era and he relived step-by-step his chapters of life. His book also covers stories about his family. As Hódy told me Q.:„This book is not a textbook, nor a juicy celeb, neither a novel, it is an autobiography book. Basically, unfolds a lot ups-and-downs experiences, how to deal with success and loss and for the future basketball generation there are lessons to be heard and to be kept in mind, these a  marvellous stories along the way, that can not be shut out from them. As he said: Q.:”This is what life taught me about and never too old to pass on good advice.”

The launch of Les’s book in Hungarian was published with the support by the Hungarian Basketball Association. At first, the launch was held at Szeged and then after in Budapest late May.

The intended publication date was to be said out in Hungary during May 2017 and so it happened. To add some more good news to the autobiography book „Not an Ordinary Life” is now available in Hungary, title: “Osztályidegenből Halhatatlan” in Hungarian language  and also can be purchased on Kindle from Amazon in English edition. Download the free Kindle app and get a „slice” of the electronic version of the book. But, no worries the book is available by ordering through Amazon and not just on a „Lazy Sunday” it could be read on the porch.

The official book launch was held in Melbourne last November. Dr Endre Domaniczky – Consul of Hungary officiated with Lindsay Gaze OAM who represented the Australian basketball fraternity.

Being curious how the 73-year-old world-class pianist Richard Goode plays Beethoven? Would like to listen to a real Russian program conducted by Dmitri Kitayenko?Interested in what the Estonian genius, Paavo Järvi does on the stage? Would rather spend an evening with the legendary Greek violinist Leonidas Kavakos? All possible in the new 2016/17 season of the Budapest Festival Orchestra.

In brief about the new series…

The BFO will be launching two new series in the upcoming season. The concert series Rising Stars gives three young and talented conductors, each of them special to the orchestra, the opportunity to introduce themselves to audiences. As Iván Fischer put it when describing the series, Quote: “We want to develop the next generation of performers, and naturally that includes conductors at the beginning of their careers. I vividly remember what it was like when I was similarly thrown in at the deep end a few decades ago. It was so helpful to see so many pairs of friendly, supportive eyes in the concert hall. Please give these new youngsters a smile.”

The three conductors making their stage debuts will be Gergely Dubóczky and the Australian Vladimir Fanshil, both of whom have spent years working alongside Iván Fischer as assistant conductors, and Victor Aviat of France, who may be familiar to BFO audiences primarily in his role as an oboist.

The other new programme, Back to Nature, is a series of chamber music concerts performed in the orchestra’s rehearsal hall, where our musicians will play pieces by Bach, Vivaldi, Telemann, Brahms and Mozart on period instruments. Among the rare instruments on stage will be a Graf piano.

The Festival Orchestra’s Baroque Ensemble will be performing several concerts during the season: a real luminary of old music, Japanese-Bavarian violinist Midori Seiler will visit twice, performing an Italian and a German concert, while Hervé Niquet will join local musicians as artistic director and concert master for a performance of French baroque music.

Need not have to get too far from the highway, when driving from North-West Europe i.e. Austria to Budapest or  heading to other cities in Hungary to visit Kőszeg and its surroundings. Indeed, should not to be missed by foreigners to take a break, stop, visit the historical sites, stay for a couple of days, taste the local gastronomic delights.

Hungary specifically target a lot to choose from among the green economy: 21% of the area of our woodland, close to a quarter of that number is high global level, and 10% of the country is under nature protection.

Visit to Őrség seen the village deservedly won a European rating agency, destinations, EDEN Award. The history sources are from the past centuries about the vineyard and its role of the city. Recently established the Kőszeg Wines worthy guardian of the wine culture featuring the grape and wine history, the wine making traditions. wine. The Kőszeg winemakers community preserved in caring the history of the local wine shoots in the “Book of Grapes” from 1740.

Jolly Good Oratory – Monty Python ‘s movie “Life of Brian” comes to life on stage in Budapest.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Well the month May is a bit far ahead, but never-the-less to hear the good news in advance is always a thrill!

Monty Python  – Not the Messiah … then who(!?!) … well in a nutshell  –  just a very naughty boy!

The domestic premiere on May, 31 will be at the Papp László Budapest Sports Arena.

After seven years captivates concert halls around the world the show is coming in May, 2015. Eric Idle and John Du Prez. „Not the Messiah” was also the author of the award-winning musical Spamalot. The show to be presented is a veritable genuine cavalcade in its unique genre. The founder of Monty Python, Eric Idle once said this is the „Baroque ‘n’ Roll”. Been on tour with the “Not the Messiah” in Canada, UK, United States of America, Australia and so forth, the show in May makes its debut in Budapest by excellent Hungarian singers, artist.  The Life of Brian from ’79 holds classic gags to giggle about and of course the best known famous songs which will trigger loud of smiles and laughter by the audience.

On October, 2. 2009., with a smashing full house celebrated with this piece Monty Python’s 40th birthday together with still existing Monty Python members, as Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam. The show was held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, along with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Chorus and with renowned opera soloists.

Eric Idle –  An Englishman in Budapest!

A comedian, actor, writer, singer, composer and songwriter and member of the Monty Python team and will be visiting Hungary for the first time and that ain’t a joke!

Definitely, the one-and-only undistinguishable guest at the premiere night.

Naturally, the well-known catchy songs, as the  “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” and the “Lumberjack Song” will not be missing. The jolly good oratory’s domestic premier surely will warm up the hearts and souls, sing-a-ling together with the Hungarian-known opera, musical singers and actors.

Learn at the press conference of to-day, that for the time being the catchy words will be in Hungarian language with English subtitle and later on taking on the road  to countrywide cities as to: Győr, Szombathely,Veszprém, Miskolc, Debrecen, Szeged  will have the performance also in English language by the Hungarian singers and actors. This may welcome, attract more foreigners as well to see the piece.

Also highlighting with his presence, as the narrator – most probably dressed in blue, but will not be blue at all in the play – Miklós Galla without whom naturally, the show would be kinda deficient in not having him on stage. Indeed, in his vain flows the utmost Monty Python’s love and spirit from the beginning of time as a domestic follower. Actor – Péter Molnar Kálloy is not far from UK plays. He is well-known in Hungary having huge love in playing W. Shakespeare pieces.

Starring in the show: Judith: Melinda Heiter – soprano – Hungarian State Opera singer,  Mandy Cohen: Kata  Janza – mezzo-soprano  – Budapest Operetta Theater,  Brian Cohen: Zsolt Homonnay – tenor  – Budapest Operetta Theater,  Stan / Loretta / Ben: Steve  Hajdú – baritone-like  – Madách Theater, Reg Biggus Kukis: Demeter Pintér – bass.

Naturally, would be kinda of deficient without having on stage, the full spirit of Miklós Galla in the upcoming show. He is Hungary’s Monty Python’s utmost domestic follower.

The „jolly-good oratorium” having 80 members of Dohnányi Orchestra will be providing the music, conductorGábor Hollerung along with 100 members from the Budapest Academic Amateur Choral Society.

Text Book and lyrics: Eric Idle. Music: JOHN DU Prez and Eric Idle. Original screenplay by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin. Light and lighting designer – János  Madarász (Bird), Director –  György Szomor, Producer – László Sándor.

7TH “VINAGORA” INTERNATIONAL WINE AWARD CEREMONY – BUDAPEST – 2014.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Wine Gala – official award ceremony

VinAgora was founded in 1992 and up to present it is considered to be in the World’s ten most respective international wine  competition.  During the competition Hungary was not the only the one representing numerous domestic wines, but  a significant number of bottles arrived (unfortunately, pitty without some of their wine makers). Hearing the numbers of participants from the foreigner countries and the number of bottles of wine in the competition made me feel as floating in a huge pond filled with wines. As it was told at the award ceremony, 19 countries have participated with 579 kind of different wines and within that number also a couple of champagnes.

The award ceremony’s announcement  took place at the New York Palace in Budapest. Locals and foreigner awarded wine makers took the so-called stage and received  congratulations  to their awards  from the founder Mr. Dr. Miklós Kállay – president of the 15th VinAgora International Wine competition and Mr. Zoltán Zilai – executive director of the wine competition  – organiser of the Hungarian Grape and Wine Culture NP Inc.

Mr. Dr. Miklós Kállay said: „Q” … „The first VinAgora competition was held in ’92. In those days there were only 119 competitors.  The competition is organized  every second year.  The development is pretty obvious because from the 74% of the wines competing were nearly one-third  from abroad. The samples: 44% of white wine, rose 7% to 32% of red wine, champagne and the so-called still wines. The competition is overseen by the members of the International Federation of Wine Competitions.”

Mr. Zoltán Zilai – executive director said: „Q” … “Was a huge task for the jury judging the high number of wines to give awards, medals of up to 30% of the wines entered in the competition.”

The VinAgora tournament welcomed wines from  Downunder (6 different Gatt wines receiving silver-and-bronz medals). Having a short chat with the representer at the Gatt table was as having a session about what is so unique of the Gatt wines. The young man told me the secret is in the Hallmark Barossa Shiraz‘s characteristic power and opulence origins from the vineyard  that grows in the heart of the Valley Sumptuous furthermore, the blackberry and Satsuma plum flavor on a long and generous palate with notes of licorice. Rodust structure and fine graphite tannins from 18 months in new American and French oak barrels.  He added saying it can be drink now or place it into a cellar for 15 yrs … oh well having to not have any cellar, so went for it on the spot and it was superb. 🙂

Not far from saying … Knowing the fact where Hungary geographically sits …  there is not any country in Europe where there is as much mineral hot water flowing under the ground … The Hungarian Gold!  Can be also be said … at the four corners of its territories has special soil which makes the vineyards  rich  and special tastes of wines, like nowhere else in Europe.   Heading back to the nineteen countries participating  at the international competition, three gold,  five silver medals and a special prizes was given this year to Uruguay’s Bodega Narbona winery Narbona Tannat Roble 2011 having the  title: “Country’s Best” … i.e.“The nation’s top wine”.  Not too much of a surprise,  the winemaker of Agrolaguna  from Croatia received three gold and three silver medals having in the competition twelve bottles of wines. In addition to the still white and red wines category, the entered bottles of champagne also received awards. Well recognised by the jury awarded with the Silver the  Aurora Brut Cardonnay – Serra Gaucha, from Brasil.

After the award ceremony …the tasting started … rolling around the long-and-wide tables, the invited media folks and shortly joining by the visitors having purchased their entry tickets, began the tasting show. The  floor was opened to the visitors from 2 p.m. till 8 p.m. where the estimated number of visitors throughout the day were around one thousand. During  the tasting at the same time with mainly the local wine makers anyone could have gone into a chat. They were curious to know by asking after tasting one-and-another wines, which one took the hook on them and then after they talked in-depth of that special year’s summer condition, the special soil of  the vineyard. Emphasizing the grapes scent and taste  dominant to the wine they are proud to present here at the VinAgora. Had to concentrate which are the wines preferring to taste, cause naturally even having a sip of couple and not all of the overall of 579 different wines which would have had been more than dangers!

Such competition is also a grand opportunity in learning the differences, whereabouts of a famous local and foreigner wine regions. They say in a competition there are always winners and losers. Here there were not any losers and most of all the visitors have had a chance to not just simply have a glass of wine but at the same time to know more about where it comes from and the manner it is produced and last but not least to meet the wine makers personally.

“VinAgora best Hungarian Type Wine” named “Olaszrizling” group by the Neszmély Szöllősi Winery. In 2011 “Melegeshegy Riesling” was awarded the prize and at the same time the winery was awarded as the “Most Successful Family Winery”  Five wines named after his family name has been awarded this year!  In 2013 “Rosé Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon”, “Merlot” and “Gamay” blending by the Rose Mundial at Cannes – France, also deserved gold award.

Another excellent rosé wine from the Hungarian wine cellar of  Eva Gálné Dignisz has released. In the year 2013 she won the award with her Pinot Noir Rosé 2013.,  as the “Winemaker of the Year”.
