Nations Cheese Contest Award Ceremony:

 Sunday, September,13. 2015. 5.20 p.m.

Here is in brief  a peak into the presentation given by the Greek and United Kingdom part to the history, tradition kept to their cheese  … Below is a part of the Greece presentation given by Konstantinos Flouris – Economic and Commercial Office – Embassy of Greece – Budapest and it goes like this Q.: “According to the Greek mythology, the gods of Mount Olympus sent Aristaeus, son of god Apollo, to teach men the art of cheese making. It was called a “gift of everlasting value”. Greece is rich in cheese production, with a cheese loving population. For the Greeks cheese is not just an accompanying food – it is food per se. The annual per capita consumption is about 25 kilos, one of the biggest in the EU countries. Greece is classified in the 9th place based on cheese production among the 28 EU countries. There are 16 million sheep and goats in Greece, whose milk is used to produce cheese and yogurt. Following in the footsteps of tradition, Greek cheese makers managed to produce an important selection of cheeses, some of which are unique in the world.  The art of cheese made in Greece has evolved over the years. Feta cheese is made in Greece for over two centuries, and is the undisputed number one item on Greek dinner tables. It is noteworthy, that in Greece approximately 300 different types of cheese are produced, either in small or large quantities, and 21 Greek cheese varieties (among them kefalotyri, feta and graviera cheeses) have been accorded PDO status (“Protected Designation of Origin”) by the European Commission.

As for the presentation of Adam Kettle-Williams  – UK Embassy in Budapest talked about the Red Leichester cheese going for the award in the competition …  saying this is a special cheese in the UK, Also told the story of the traditional cheese rolling race which is pretty popular in the UK … Q.: „Thousands gather each year to watch Cooper’s Hill cheese rolling competition. Contestants in the men’s race chase a replica Double Gloucester Cheese down the steep gradient during the annual cheese-rolling Bank Holiday tradition in Gloucestershire, England. Contestants from around the world tumble-down the 200m slope, like a rocket to win the world-famous event and the one who first get down the hill receive the Double Gloucester Cheese as the reward. … Also a quicky history.: „Randwick, Gloucestershire, had two, probably unrelated, calendar customs of note. The cheese-rolling was described in a letter, dated April 1827, published in William Hone’s Table Book, which related that every May Day three large Gloucester cheeses were decked with flowers and carried on litters in procession through the town, and were then rolled around the church before being cut up and distributed. This custom has been revived, following closely the old description, but with only one cheese being distributed and the other two set aside for rolling at the start of Randwick Wap. The term ‘Wap’ has not been satisfactorily explained, but it is the name for the local revel or feast, which was held on the second Monday after Easter, and it perhaps pertains to the weaving trade which was the mainstay of the village economy. The celebrations included a mock mayor ceremony, first mentioned in 1703, and suppressed about 1892 because of the drunkenness it encouraged. It was revived in 1972,  along with other celebrations of the new Randwick Wap.”

The Wine Festival of 2015 will take place at the same venue within the Buda Castle beginning from

Wednesday, September, 9. until Sunday, September, 13.

These various European cheese perfectly will go along with your wine either having a sip of dry, red or sparkling wines and good to keep in mind to give it a try from afar the American cheese to be first introduced in Hungary, which was previously an award-winning cheese in the United States of America.

Jewish Cultural Festival – Budapest – 2015.

thimage

A Jewish cultural cavalcade in Budapest slowly reaching the end of the summertime season can be a special occasion for everyone. Over the past years, every visitor could rightfully feel the event was his own, and I know this will be no different this year with the Jewish Cultural Festival hosted under its new name. This is where the Hungarian Jewish Community opens its gates, presents its customs and the colourful world of its traditions. Every year, excellent Jewish and non-Jewish men and women rally their forces to entertain those interested in Jewish culture with superb programs during the Jewish Cultural Festival.

Budapest is a receptive city. Our festival demonstrates that the capital of Hungary is host to a diversity of cultures, welcoming its visitors from all parts of the world with friendship. The programs offered by the festival could best be compared to a bunch of colourful wild flowers. Fresh flowers that shine in a thousand shapes and colours, beautiful on their own, and gorgeous in a bunch. Symbiosis is a widespread form of plant life. Symbiosis means two plants living together that is advantageous for both.

The symbiosis of the Hungarian and the Jewish cultures has brought about many an eternal value over the past centuries. “So the cock crows” – we hear at Klezmer concerts and the song has become a treasure for all Hungarians. Its composer is Eisik Taub, the wonder rabbi of Nagykálló, born in 1751.

Mariusz Rosenthal was born in Balassagyarmat in 1789. Today, he is known as Márk Rózsavölgyi. Few are aware that this Jewish man gave us the Csárdás – “czardash”. He was a friend of the great poet, János Petőfi. When the National Theatre was inaugurated, it was opened with the round dance Palotás composed by Rózsavölgyi.

Ferenc Neumann was born in 1878. He wrote the world’s perhaps most beautiful youth novel, The Pál Street Boys in a crowded, musical café, Of course, Ferenc Neumann is known by his pen name, Ferenc Molnár. The range of examples is virtually endless. They are all representatives of the co-existence of the Hungarian and Jewish cultures.

Welcome the events of the Jewish Cultural Festival 2015 with joy, with open heart. Enjoy its rich, colourful program and live in a symbiosis with it during the next few days. Those who come and visit the events of the festival can be sure of one thing. They will not depart empty-handed.

They will receive the mental-spiritual treasures grounded in thousands of years of tradition that can be of help to anyone in finding a way in the complicated issues of life. The great venues to visit … the Synagogues in Dohány Street and Rumbach Street and the Goldmark Hall

Exhibition Budapest – “Freedom Express” – European Network Remembrance and Solidarity.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

“Freedom Express”

Opening exhibition in Budapest until August, 8. 2015.

Covering Roads to 1989. East-Central Europe 1939-1989 and is available for visitors at the open-air  park venue outside the National Museum .

Freedom Express is a social and educational campaign organised by the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity. Its first part was a study trip whereby a group of young artists, journalists and historians visited Solidarity’s Gdańsk, then Warsaw, Budapest, Sopron, Timisoara, Prague Bratislava and Berlin. The trip’s agenda of meetings, workshops and artistic activities was made possible thanks to the cooperation of a number of institutions involved with 20th century history.

The exhibition “Freedom Express was officially opened by Zoltán Balog, Hungarian Minister of Human Resources, along with dr László Csorba, director of the Hungarian National Museum, dr Iván Bába, the Hungarian coordinator of the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity, Lieselore Cyrus, Ambassador of the German Federal Republic to Hungary and Roman Kowalski, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Hungary. Over 100 honourable guests were present at the ceremony.

During the opening ceremony Minister Zoltán Balog said that the duty of those who survived the dictatorship is to keep the memory of the difficult past and pass it on to next generations. This is our moral obligation. He also stressed that the communication about the past only makes sense when something good comes as a result of it. That is why Minister Balog concluded with a question about the role of remembrance, which is the key issue in the work of the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity. The fundamental objective of the Freedom Express campaign, initiated by the ENRS, is to create a common narrative of European history – said Roman Kowalski, Ambassador of Poland in Hungary. He added that such projects contribute to shaping the dialogue and creating the complementary narration about the history of the 20th century, in which there is room for a multiplicity of perspectives and interpretations. This dialogue supports our identity, giving the chance to future generations to avoid the mistakes of the past – Ambassador Kowalski concluded. Dr Iván Bába stressed that today’s perception of the communist past only through the prism of humour and everyday life, can be misleading. During the communist past, the sense of humour played a crucial role and had a clearly defined therapeutic effect. With the help of Polish posters, Hungarian films and various other forms of artistic expression we tried to remain independent and defend ourselves. Today communist period returns in a specific pop version. It is becoming more and more popular amongst young people and unfortunately promotes a distorted picture of the past – explained dr Bába.

Ambassador of the German Federal Republic in Hungary, Lieselore Cyrus, observed that this exhibition is a signpost for the future, teaches us how to search for freedom. The idea of freedom and democracy must remain our compass – she stated.

The exhibition, designed by historians associated with European Network Remembrance and Solidarity, documents the complicated process through which this part of Europe regained its freedom from communist dictatorship. Presented earlier in Berlin, Brussels, and Warsaw the exhibition concentrates on various ways in which civil liberties were limited in the former communist bloc and on attempts made to regain them. It focuses especially on the question of what connects and divides remembrance of the events that preceded the fall of communism in Central and Eastern.
