Food and Literature – Italian Culture Institute – Budapest

In the series of  A Week of Italian Cuisine in the World at the Italian Culture Institute was held a theater show … Art of Cooking … with Maria Teresa Ruta –  Guenda Goria – Silvia Siravo entitled Food and Literature.

Food from ancient times has a long history especially when it comes to Italy flavors.

A culinary evening with sayings from famous people’s, movie worlds, traditional Italian dishes, wines, composers, desserts was on showcase. Began the show by going back in time to biblical age – Eve and forbidden fruit (apple) with several stops in historical lanes to the foodstuffs  and their role in history.

The meals damped not only our hunger, but also creating an opportunity to – based on the Convivio Latin phrase meaning = be in community, share with each other our joys, our sorrows.

Literary works refer to moments of sharing meals, recipes and dishes, because all that is about food, is also a question an important question of life for the Italians. Probably, not on my own, many know, that taking a pan of food over to the neighbor, friends is a kind act, but if the pan, pot is not given back it can become a strong feeling of annoyance, displeasure, or hostility between each other. The Italian of housewives cooking tools are the most important thing in life.

This evening we sat by the imaginary “tables” …  how decisive the food is for our lives. Of course, the words were spiced up with entertaining musical inserts.

For example, Rossini  “set of table” , in his words: Q.: “What is Love for the heart, is the stomach appetite. The stomach is the conductor that conducts the orchestra of emotions, empty stomach sounds like a bassoon or resentful longing flute, while a full rumble beating rhythm of pleasure, joy drumbeat. Love is nothing but hustle and bustle on stage primadonna whose passionate voice intoxicating our ears and our hearts to kidnap. Eat and Love, Sing and Digest are the four acts of the comonic opera that we call LIFE, which is quickly fleeting moment like drunkenness caused by champagne. A fool to let it go without enjoying it”

They talked about the Italian movies having  such an effect culinary  moments, such as:  “The Sweet Life” Ravioli with spelled spinach,  „An American in Rome” Tomato Spaghetti, ”For a Bunch of Dollars”Sausage Beans, „Panther”Flavored Macaroni„Swept away” – Seafood with spaghetti …just mentioning a few.

Almost certain by the end, after the imaginary “table” everybody became terribly hungry and in company asked one-an-other … Are you hungry? … Where shall we to head to eat?

King Matthias Hunyadi – Corvina Library – National Széchényi Library

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The exhibition opened on Monday, November, 3. 2018 at the  National Széchényi Library in Buda.

The most beautiful, the hidden, less emphasized side of

Mátyás Hunyadi’s Codex can be visited through November, 6. 2018. – February, 9. 2019. – Budapest.

On the occasion of the official opening were present: LászlóTüske Director-General, Miklós Kásler, Minister of Human Resources,  Csörsz Rumen István,  Professor László Szörényi ,  Edina Zsupán.

The new exhibition at the National Széchényi Library (OSZK) explores historical, new legendary codex books  collection of King Matthias.

There are many gorgeous Corvina and other ornamental codex books coming from domestic collections, including from New York, Paris, the Vatican and various parts of the world. Among the manuscripts will be seen in Hungary extremely important piece for the first time … these are more valuable in terms of history and culture.  The fact that the royal house has a uniform appearance, the Renaissance ornament library can well be followed, thanks to the joint work of the Buda’s book painters, bookbinders, copiers and humanists with their dream library to came true. From the world-renowned library, according to our present knowledge, there are approximately 220 volumes to have  had survived the centuries. To-day they are kept in major libraries all over the world. Corvina in Italy are kept in several cities of Italy – such places as: Milano, Firenze, Parma, Modena, Verona,Volterra, Venezia, Roma. Currently 58 corvinas are owned by various collectors across Hungary and 37 are kept in National Széchényi Library. Altogether were 216 Corvina but in Hungary’s turbulent years of history many were destroyed or lost. After the death of the King Matthias (1490), II. Ulászlo and II. Lajos gave away many books. Among others, a special Greek-language book arrived from Vienna, which was discovered in 2010 as the only one of Matthias’s Corvinas,  also discovered the Cassianus Corvina, which is currently held in Paris and is  definitely the most beautiful style of the Buda workshop. The corvinas from Leipzig, preserved the work of Byzantine emperor Konstantin († 959) and at the time being was in use on the court order ceremony. Also can be viewed the beauty of the illustrated book from the Vatican Apostolic Library,  the so-called “Vatican Mission”. May discover at the exhibition, the book of  the most important painters of the Buda workshop Francesco da Milano Castello, th  magnificent manuscript, including the Torino treasures, from a private collection. Domonkos Kalmáncsehi issued three decorative codex, one of the most beautiful Hungarian Codex from the past, also from New York the breviary and mission. According to the researchers memory these the two codex were not exhibited before in Hungary.

Upon guided tour floating through  the history of the treasure of arts  … the Renaissance royal library of King Matthias Hunyadi followed Italian models, but came into being in the last decade of the king’s rule in a fertile Hungarian cultural environment. It was the earliest library of this sort in Europe. It was the earliest library of this sort in Europe. The concept of design resembling the library of Federico da Montefeltro in Urbino but also bearing similarity with the library of the Aragonese court in Naples. It approximately contained 2000 volumes and an amount surpassed only by the library of Papal State in Rome. The earliness and primacy of King Matthias’s collection is illustrated by the fact that even the Medici regarded it in certain aspects as a model for the library at Buda. The library contains work of the classic authors of Antiquity and the early Fathers of Church, mainly in Latin and some in Greek. At the time being it was exceptional to have in the Italian library the Greek manuscripts. Most recent researches proved that the manuscripts uniformity was only at the end of the 1480s. New codices were made and on the pages were Hungarian and Italian owners name such as: Johannes Vitéz and György Handó who were Hungarian and Bohemian coats of arms of King Matthias. These Corvinas were designed with uniform leather and velvet bindings. The book production began 1480 as Beatrice of Aragon arrived flourishing Renaissance Naples to Hungary. Her coat of arms can be seen on several codices made at the time in Buda. The group of codices are called Corvinas, but has not been as part of the royal library collection, were liturgical manuscripts serving the in church or monastery and these upon order of the King or occasionally by the royal couple were representative pieces of the culture at the court. These were extremely richly decorated and were placed at the chapel of the royal castle of Buda. Matthias grants arm to Orbán of Nagylucse, royal treasure and provost of the Saint Nicholas collegial chapter of Székesfehérvár, later Bishop of Eger. The decoration combines Gothic and Renaissance elements. The style says that the work was by Francesco da Castello and also by the master of Milan decorating together with Francesco Rosselli one of the most influential masters of the Buda workshop. These are sophisticated examples of Francesco da Castello and Rosselli imitations.
The Janus Pannononius’s Gospel Book … four Gospels with each having the figure of the author painted by an anonymous illuminator. Péter Váradi’ handbook on Canon Law printed in Venice, but the decoration was prepared at Buda … and still more to see.

If we consider that these texts and illustrations were made by human hands in the 15th century, these eye-catching masterpieces and art treasures will present a historic era for future generations.

Worth to go back in time visit the exhibition see the masters works.

Maestro Gilbert Varga and Tibor Bogányi conductors with two faces at Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra – Pécs

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The Pannon Philharmonic Orchester (PFZ ) introduced  Maestro Gilbert Varga at Pécs in the Kodály Centre’s concert auditorium, whereas an open Group meeting was held on October 30, 2018, marking the beginning of a new chapter. This was the first time ever, the ensemble held an all-encompassing “Group meeting” that was open to the press as well with the orchestra members underlining the importance of the event that ushered in this new chapter.

The PFZ succeeded to sign for the forthcoming 3 years a contract with the Principal Conducter Maestro Gilbert Varga which was officially announced at the Kodály Center Music Hall. Conductor Tibor Bogányi, who has been for the past 18 years the lead conductor will share the stage with the maestro in the coming seasons. The ensemble will stronger the orchestra and bring fresh air into the music hall. For instance, said Bogányi  Q.: “Mutual conductors has become common elsewhere in Europe i.e. in Finland there are four permanent conductors at the Finnish Philharmonic Orchestra, and goes very well, each one conducting different music pieces. This joint mission is a unique new form in the Hungarian musical life with the ensemble of two equally artistic director in directing a spirit of trust in mutual co-operation. The two leader virtuoso conductors, alongside will be bringing new color into the Hungarian musical life for its artists, orchestra leadership and certainly will be a gift for the ears to the local and foreigner audience visiting the Kodály Center at Pécs.

Gilbert Varga is a Maestro of Hungarian descent, born in London, his family emigrated in the late ’40s. His father Tibor Varga was a legendary Hungarian violinist.  The maestro in the beginning made up his mind to be a violinist, but later on found himself the “worthy place” in the music hall and stepped up to the conductor’s pulpitum. The legendary conductor was the Music Director of Philharmonia Hungarica, a symphony group gathered of Hungarian musicians who emigrated in 1956.
The Pécs based orchestra have had been unsuccessfully attempted to call him home on multiple occasions, and now finally excepted to come to Hungary. Earlier, with the Basque Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonia Hungarica and  currently chief conductor of the Basque Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonia Hungarica. He worked at the Malmö Symphony Orchestra and the Stuttgart’s first permanent guest conductor and as a guest conductor also conducts the world’s finest ensembles from the United States to Taiwan.

The Maestro Varga, spoke about many instances in his career when he worked in a pair with other Principal Conductors, including Cristian Madeal and Mario Venzago. The Maestro Varga said Q.: „Together with Tibor Bogányi, we will be like a conductor with two faces. I have experience in similar paired leading conductor work, it has always been a positive experience for me and forward-thinking for the orchestra. Fulfilling this invitation by means sharing the responsibilities with Tibor Bogányi, making in use of opportunities that lie in our different age but open artistic capabilities.”

Q.: „The orchestra is constantly exploring new ways of reaching out to the audiences both young and elder folks. The idea is to activate young ones and young adults instead of passive listening, to gain experience of what the orchestra music is about. It is important to “win” the young ones… cause they are the next generation who will decided whether they will enjoy later the symphonic music or not, so our goal is that  for those coming for the first time to the music hall, to give them our best to feel, love to enjoy the symphony orchestra music” so said conductor Tibor Bogányi. The upcoming collaborative work both a test of personality and a professional challenge. Bogányi has undertaken a leadership position that supports creative expression, and he sees the older Maestro’s main role as prioritising the synthesis of professional tasks and broadening the young musicians’ professional horizons even further. Moreover, the pair’s distinctive musical interests will also enrich the orchestra’s repertoire.

The PFZ Director – Zsolt Horváth sees the aim of this new era as the lasting establishment of Hungary’s leading orchestras. Due to the group’s inner motivation and the artistic demands the orchestra, unique amongst local symphonic orchestras, has achieved a standard noted on both national and international stages. The collaboration is a high level of education that is already manifested in the orchestra’s current processes.  Q.: “The Pannon Philharmonic must get the opportunities and occasions to evolve, and we are confident in it cause we feel that we have done everything to provide them in the past 16 years.” stated the director. Added, overall the concerts conducted by Gilbert Varga and Tibor Bogányi cover about 70% of their program, but will continue to work also with well-known guest conductors in the future as in the past. Last but not least Zsolt Horváth stated, Maestro Gilbert Varga, is the band’s true national orchestra of Central Europe and the Visegrád countries. The goal is to act as cultural ambassadors as providing a guarantee that the Hungarian music represented a worthy level in the Carpathian Basin and Hungary surrounding.

Agnes Morvay – president of the Art Council of PFZ, said … This co-operation of the two directors … the experience of Gilbert Varga is clear, concrete sound design, artistic work and the talented youthful personality of Tibor Boganyi  the orchestra will surely benefit from  both sides  and the new sound  also will provide a higher love to the concert lovers.

Zsolt Pava  – Mayor of Pécs emphasized Gilbert Varga career guarantee that the PFZ new professional level step to happen; the orchestra brand strengthens the arrival of the conductor. Musicians of the company with excellent artistic and professional qualifications are “on the threshold” for wage increases, he added.
