The Gyula’s Shakespeare Festival Celebrates Shakespeare’s 450th Birthday!

Here’s a peak into the upcoming  six-weeks …  June, 22  and August, 11. 2014. … programs at the City of Gyula.

William Shakespeare turned 450 years old this April. The Gyula Shakespeare Festival celebrates in style within its 10th year anniversary. Even after 450 years, Shakespeare still has a strong impact and influential role in society and on people’s educational upbringing. William Shakespeare’s work is considered and treated as the greatest literature in the English language. Also known as his works encompassed every emotional experience the human beings have. Shakespeare has permeated the Western culture and around every corner of the Earth is a reference to his incredible works. His intellectually rich stories and characters have influenced numerous books, movies and television shows. Even our everyday language has been shaped by the common phrases he originally coined, such as:  „Dead as a doornail” – „A laughing stock” – „A wild goose chase”- „Neither here nor there” -„In stitches” … and last but not least, one of  Shakespeare’s common phrase the  „Fair play” is mostly known and in use in the daily communication around in all the societies of our Globe. The program director, József  Gedeon held a preliminary program review, whereas he mention in brief three new presentation to come, such as the „Midsummer Night’s Dream”- Thursday, July, 3. – played by the National Theater from Budapest ,staged at the Castle, directed by the internationally renowned  Georgian, David Doiashvili. The „Journey by Moonlight” from Szerb’s novel, the most popular works from the 20th century’s Hungarian literature . On – Tuesday, July, 22. at the Ladics courtyard will be staged the adaptation of the cult novel „The moon prisoners „ by Árpád Sopsits on the stage at the Castle Theater. The Hungarian Olympic water polo team and a nice Scottish lady-turn by the adventures of the ’30s,  Pál Ábraham – Imre Harmath – László Szilágyi – Dezső Kellér the musical comedy. This piece will set the stage for a presentation on Thursday,July 31, at the pond theater „Chewing Tobacco Bartholomew”. The lively presentation by the dancers and a brass band players joining the festival from the Székesfehérvár’s  Vörösmarty Theater During the festival multi-arts festival can also be visited to theater, music, film, children’s corners and gastronomy. At the jubilee festival the key performances will be the arrival of  Shakespeare’s Globe theater from London. The popular comedy „Much Ado About Nothing” is directed by Gyula Max Webster. The world-famous Belgian director Luk Perce staging „Macbeth” arriving from St. Petersburg Baltic House Festival Theater.  Visitors are more than welcomed to see „King Lear” starring with the well-known Hungarian actor György Cserhalmi.  The „Whatever you want” comedy will be preformed by the Vig Theater from Budapest. The presentation of „Macbeth” will be shown by the guest Maladype Theater. A superb Chilean company will be presented  the „Othello”. The cream on top of the cake will be presented by the Scottish Society in ancient Scottish language „gelule”  „Macbeth”. Better to sharpen your ears, and hopefully in just 10 minutes will be easy to flow and follow the lyrics. For the first time to be organized in Hungary at all, the visitors may see … as a side event … connected into having a slice of the  Fringe Street Theater – Thursday, July, 10. …  the company is known as the largest arts festival in the world. Also musical productions can be captured at various public venues in the city. Within the upcoming six-week program, three-days of folk festival, craft fair starting at Friday, June 27. On Tuesday, July, 15. Folk and World Music Festival will fill the air staring: Ferenc Sebő, the Muzsikás, Márta Sebestyén, Kálmán Balogh. Saturday, July 19. the Zawinul Legacy Band  former co-musicians arriving from the States will be giving a memorial concert to one of the greatest jazz musicians of the century Joe Zawinul. Live jazz night  show by the Dresch Quartett and Klára Hajdú – Winner of the Year jazz singer.  JAZZZZZZZ will not be missing, guest musician once again will take the stage. The excellent Belgian jazz singer Vanwelden Carroll, who composed music to Shakespeare’s sonnets. Sunday, July, 20. coming from USA, the virtuoso R & B saxophonist Sax Gordon, playing together with the best Italian blues band, Luca Giordano Band, also on stage together with the awesome musicians  the famous Hungarian blues guitarist Tibor Tátrai. Internationally renowned harmonica Matthias Pribojszki band and the Blue Rabbit Hammond Band will give much pleasure to the Jazz Lovers.The Beregszászi Theater brings a historic plays. „Re-creating Zoltán” directed by Attila Vidnyánszky. There will be readings of contemporary Hungarian theater story pieces. The kids will be entertained bythe Bóbita puppet shows. Continuously being on stage for 40 years, the superb and most popular for over generations, the 70s  musical production of the „Popfestival” directed by Enikő Eszényi, Director – Budapest Vig Theater will beat the musical under the moonlight at the Castle Theater. The Dohnányi Orchester led by Gábor Hollerung along with the ExperiDance Essence will be one of the highlights at the festival. During the Shakespeare Festival an exhibition of the landscape painter of Gyula born, 170 years ago Munkácsy  can be visited. AUSSIE DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN IN BUDAPEST!

The Grand Market Hall began its series of Nation Days in 2005 upon the joint agreement between the Metropolitan Municipality Directorate and the Grand Market Hall. The event brought alive was to target,  introduce to the Hungarians different nations gastronomy, culture,  products and tour information from the four corners of the Earth.

This year was the second year, whereas Downunder was on the spot for a week-end with products brought to the venue by Hungarian dealers distributing Aussie authentic musical instruments – didgeridoo, toys, boomerang, a kinda geological fair was present with wonderful small pieces of rocks and semi precious stones … not only from Australia, but from the surrounding countries …, treasures beyond the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea, diverse homeland plants e.g. the tinny eucalypt tree, interesting geological formations and last but not least shark were present, NO real bites only their  different size of tooth from their jaws  formed into medals and bracelets,  which were for many a  feast for the eyes. A travel agency brought leaflets, gave practical advice to visitors planning to go Downunder and New Zealand to celebrate the New Year event beside the Harbour Bridge.

One of the highlights at the event was not only viewing the products, items at an exhibition, but were also available at the booth. The target dry Sheila’s and Mate’s Outback full length coats and hats brought to the venue by Ilona and Tamás were very famous. They both started their business in 2005 by importing a range of original Aussie country-style Outback Features. They surely were eye-catching pieces and showed much interest to the strolling by tourist  to stop and shop around. These bit-and-pieces targeted my heartbeat as well, especially the “Southern Cros” Kangaroo leather, suede exterior, light rumpled outback hat.  They have a website at www.eladoaruk.hu where anybody can find outfits for their own taste.

Indeed was good to be present and see a slice of Australia, whereas not only the Hungarians, but  a crowed of tourist on their sightseeing tour entered the market hall and many foreigners picked some goods and items beside the Hungarian flavors on this very special shopping day at the Nation  Day of Australia”  in Budapest.

Unfortunately, one twist was at the Aussie National Day … The cakes had nothing to do with the original cakes and cookies available Downunder. The man on the stand said the pastries are made by an Australian bloke who lives in Austria and has a bakery in Budapest and he made these cakes and cookies  for the Aussie  days according to the original real flavors. Sorry to say, wasn’t even close to what the Australians actually have. The “apple with ginger” …. the ginger was  probably on holiday. The Limonite … was simply a sponge cake covered with chocolate – sprinkled with coconut. The cookies with carrot were simply just a sweet cookie  …  probably the bloke was out of carrots. Oh well hope nobody who tasted these will think this is what the Aussie tummies adore! They were very much alike as the Hungarian pastries. –

The event was under the patronage of the “Stake of Being” preventive Foundation.

„PEAR” – THE PÁLINKA OF THE YEAR – BUDAPEST – 2014.

As the rum is the medicine for the sailors out on the Sea … the pálinka for the Hungarian’s was … still is as an universal miracle medicine for external-internal pain reliever, sleep aids and in use for antiseptic.

Still more than a  half-day or so to roll down to the Pálinka Festival, if you haven’t made it yet, to taste the  PEAR  Pálinka of the Year 2014 cause will reach the end by 10 p.m. this evening.

For many foreigner visitors staying in Budapest, small group travelers may have been introduced for the first time and went on a full-day pálinka tour when joining to taste the blend of the Year which was this year the Pear Pálinka at the City Hall Square this week-end. Furthermore most probably they enjoyed the good atmosphere, tastes and the good performances all along the way. One of the best way to learn about the country’s culture and traditions is to be where things are happening, and yepp the Pálinka Festivals in Budapest always are the timing to be around.

In addition to the well-known distillers, this year the visitors have  had the opportunity to see-taste-buy several pálinkas to  enjoy and to fulfill their foregoing experience by taking a sip at home.

Pálinka is not for the faint hearted folks, but there is a so-called saying … … If the pálinka is stronger than you than you’re not a man, so test your self and see on what you have to improve.  Anyway having too much tasting, head on over to one of the food stalls offering home-cooked traditional meals which are boiling on the spot to ease the hunger.

A record number of exhibitors were busy throughout the festival explaining to their visitors, customs about their background at their domestic pálinka distillery.

The number of pálinka distilleries  present at the festival were higher than even before and these qualified pálinka makers were passionate about their work and  more to it valued their customers.

Many Qs and As filled the air and many old pálinka festival visitors and foreigners learnt a lot of why the Hungarian Pálinkas taste rich in fully fruity and delicious flavors.

Just mentioning a couple of stands beside the overall 41 of them to be worthwhile to visit and have a sip: the „BUTI” Distillery and Pálinka House is a smaller family own environment, but as small as it is the wider selection of fruit and „veggies” are the stars, as: pumpkin, rose hips, elderberry, blackthorn, hawthorn, rowan, wild plum pálinka. Tasted the pumkin and hawthorn and became speechless, not because having too much but words can hardly describe simply heavenly, rich in flavors.

This year celebrating the 30-year-old „BÉKÉSI” Pálinka House, an invitation stood on the wooden-wall at the stand to come and celebrate together this anniversary by having a shot of pálinka from the Békésiville, of course this invitation was to call all who this year celebrated their 30th birthday. is as wonderful as the owner, so friendly and full of hospitality.

Many stop by at the „ZSINDELYES” Pálinka House stall  and was curious to taste the house speciality the: walnut liqueur.  While taking a good look at the lineup of assortment, a kind couple was looking at the lovely decorated stall and were wondering which on should they taste. Having a short chat with them, Estel, the young lady came from Barcelona and her boyfriend Emre from Cyprus, a lovely pair (see slide show). What really was amazing, she told me she met already the rollinginbudapest.com site and has read articles and also about the Pálinka festival and so they are both here right now. Well was a coincident situation … you ain’t meeting too often folks who come upon a visit reading the herald news of events to come in Budapest.

Last but not least, indeed worthwhile to pull attention to the MÁRTON AND DAUGTHERS” Pálinka House. Having to have spoken to Mr. Márton learned something new which may pull attention for many of interest.  As he said the Marton and Daugthers wished to produce kosher pálinka, but soon learned that it has rules to be kept having to be kosher and they cannot make it at the same distillery. Therefore, bought another pálinka distillery named „MATHEUS” Pálinka House, where under the rules of producing kosher pálinka was  under the supervision of two rabbis. One Sephardi rabbi arrived from Jerusalem from the Beit (House) Yosef Badac who is present keeping the Bet Yosef’s standards and the other rabbi Michael Scharf from London who is present, observing the compliance with the rules of producing kosher pálinka.   Mr. Marton and Daugthers have surely gold fingers to produce such a velvet taste in the BARDIN aged apple brandy which can be also tasted on the spot as well.  It has an awesome VSOP quality. Received a bronze medal at the Destillata International Spirits Competition in Austria in 2007.

The highlight on the past 4 days having finally beside the warmth of the sunshine days, Márton and Daughters booth served the cool long shot , a mixture of juniper pálinka with tonic, lay on with ice.

Well „So long!” for  now till the Year the Pálinka of 2015.

James Carter and his trio are debuting in Budapest  at the Budapest Jazz Club. The formation of the James Carter Organ Trio will be present with the non less famous two real world-class musicians Gerard Gibbs on Hammond B3 and Leonard King Jr. on drums. 

Launch his career on the line collecting accolades and awards. The 1969 born saxophonist, born in Detroit  and at the age of 11 within receiving his first instrument in the hands. He was playing throughout  the New York jazz venues and by 1988 burst into the public consciousness in Lester Bowie music tutoring. Wasn’t even 23 years old when his solo album was released in Japan titled „ JC On The Set”. In 2005 ,he published his own trio album titled „Out of Nowhere at the Half Note” and in 2006 recorded the „Gold Sounds”.

In the year 2008  came out the  Present Tense Emarcy playing together with the highly acclaimed Michael Cuscuna and the hugely popular Brazilian jazz tone “Bossa JC”.  By the end of 2009  in the context of New York’s Blue Note club,  the „Heaven on Earth” project came out with the „All Star” team, along with musicians as:  John Medeski – Hammond organ, Adam Rogers – guitar, Christian McBride – bass and Joey Baron –  drums. The result was a groovy „Jam-Jazz”  in which the throbbing vitality and the highest temperature climbed on the tops-of-the-tops.

In 2011 „Caribbean Rhapsody” … concerto for   saxophones and orchester  an album which was released including the saxophone competition, written by composer Roberto Sierra which was specifically designed for that purpose.

James Carter, has repeatedly won the “Downbeat” magazine’s critics and readers awards.  Previously played with the  Lincoln Center Jazz Orchester and worked with artists and bands as: Julius Hemphill, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Charles Mingus Big Band, Aretha Franklin, David Murray, Ensemble of Chicago, Ginger Baker, Sonny Rollins, Odean Pope, Dee Dee Bridgewater.  In 1996 worked together with Robert Altman, on the  “Kansas City”  film music with saxophonist Ben Webster.

James Carter is known pretty well as a collector who already has a full arsenal contrabass saxophones and bass clarinet and in his spare time he search for antique and new wind instruments, especially trumpets and horns. Soon on its way for the Trio in celebrating their 10th anniversary.

Be ready for an amazing ray of incredible variety of materials …  from the early ’50s RnB and stirring up with the traditional spiritual emotions.

Each International Day is held  on the same  week-days and time :

Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

A great part in bringing under the umbrella these live events is the Municipality Hall and Market Board of Directors and the Embassies in Budapest.

There are so many places and venues to visit whether your just visiting, staying or working in Budapest beside rolling along the historical buildings, visiting museums or to watch the world go by, sitting outside a coffee shop or restaurant by the lazy River Danube on your free day. Yet to visit the Grand Market by itself  is also a unique experience in Budapest. The building itself was dressed up in the 19th century with a unique architecture, colorful porcelain ornaments from Zsolnay – Porcelain Manufacture Ltd.  Stepping inside the entrance gate immediately catch the eye of its beauty. It is also one of the oldest and huge market in Europe. Also won the 1st place by the CNN chose among the 5 most vibrant city markets in Europe, followed by Mercat de San Josep de la Boqueira in Barcelona, the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, the Portobello Road market in London and Les Puces in Paris .

The Budapest’s Market Hall  has three-story, on the lower level fishmongers, special home-made Hungarian sour qualities, pickles and food shops. On the first floor products can be purchased to cook a good lunch, dinner. Upstairs is the area for buying all real souvenirs for tourists … a last chance to do it, if something is left out of the list before  traveling home. Well that was in brief what to expect in entering the Grand Market Hall.

Of course there is a reason about talking the Grand Market Hall …Each year the Grand Market Hall holds the so-called Tourism Days, whereas the aim is  to introduce within the 3-days event an exhibition of that particular country’s  international traditional food and tourist attractions. It may be an interesting day for locals and foreigners to have a tip … useful information and advice  for their upcoming traveling plans and also to get into the world of international food  and folk design items. This year some international days have had already been present, as the Hungarian Days, Cypriot Days, Moroccan Days, Croatian Days and Indonesian Days.

“MOVE” – GALA EVENT – ARANYTIZ HOUSE OF CULTURE – BUDAPEST

A unique sound and visuals arts receptive audience to be seen on Sunday, May, 18 at the Aranytíz – the House of Culture, which holds its arts gala organized by the association of  the “MOVE” for the fifth time!. The healthy and disabled artists come across the stage: They have only  observed each other’s work from far distance. The special event is designed to show something unique, to provide the healthy and disabled artists in music, song, poem, or even within the common language of the dance form. Performers including Katalin Pitti, László Tahi-Toth, Leslie Szabó, Dani Torres, Teca Krizbai, Bernadette Vágó, György Lang, Laszló Benko – Omega Band  keyboardist and the grand pianist – guest of honor: Silvia Kárászy will be highlighting with their presence the Gala Event.

The famous artists excitedly preparing for the Integrated Arts Gala, which has never been seen nor heard performances by any audience. The love and emotions will not only be spreading throughout the stage reaching the audience will most surely reach the ray of love within the disable artist performances.

If your lucky enough tickets may be purchased for 600HUF on the spot, but since it has become a very popular event to be,  most probably have to be quickly cause there are only a few available.

Each year Budapest celebrates a specialty the Year’s Best Fruit Pálinka.

This year the protagonist on the stands  of  nearly 400 species of distillate luscious pear fruit pálinka will be in just an arm distance!

Don’t miss to be present at this journey to take you to heaven by the taste of the pure fruit pear pálinka !

The weekend of May, 22 up till 25 at the Downtown area at the Városháza Park reopens again the Pálinka Festival at this so-called spring event, which  cannot be called yet as the weather of springtime yet. Hopefully when the glasses will be filled with this year’s special treat the „Pear Pálinka of the Year” will be much more close to the weather for springtime. Until then here is the Herald News for the 4 days event awaiting the local and foreigners staying, working in Hungary.

After the resent year’s pálinka fruits debut as the plum, apricot and sour cherry, this year in the Capital the guest of honor will be the heavenly taste of the „Pear Pálinka”. Needn’t have to worry how it is served, ain’t no difference whether it is shaken or stirred, cause not talking about the whiskey… so it will satisfy all those visitors taste who wish to enjoy the well-known distillers, real  superior blend of fruit taste spirits. This year at the Spring Pálinka Festival the visitors will be awaited with the record number of exhibitors, with nearly 30 new and previously met distillery to offer their best-of-the-best year’s pear pálinka of the country.

Naturally, beside the awesome taste of pálinka there will be crunchy-munchies, unique gastronomic delights and sweeties. To avoid long and tiring queues, cash will be accepted everywhere instead of the previous years issued voucher on the spot and card payment systems. The entrance fee remained the same as in the past years: 2000HUF, and with the entrance ticket comes with two coupons … one for tasting the Pear Pálinka of the Year, while the other can be used at any distiller for tasting one pálinka.The daily tickets are valid for multiple entries during opening hours.  This year the finest pear  fruit Pálinka of Hungary will be in the produced in a limited edition blend with only 1500 bottles. In deed,  if anybody wish to purchase one of them,better to be a visitor on the first day at the Pálinka Festival.

IN MEMORIAM – VICTIMS OF THE HOLOCAUST (1944)

Hungarian Post Holokausztbg

 

The Hungarian Post had issued a stamp to commemorate victims of the Holocaust on the 28th of April, 2014. The symbolic wording thumbnail next to the remembrance of the victims and the revival message of rebirth. The stamp is based on the design of Esther Dom graphic artist  stamp and manufactured by ANY Security Printing. The memorial stamp is available at the larger post offices and can be ordered through the Fila-Posta – Philately-Post  Stores. Also may order from the web site of the Hungarian Post on the online stores.  The stamp’s printing method stands in 4 color offset printing and is perforateD having the size of: 30×40 mms.  The price of a stamp is 375HUF.

“Between 1941 and 1945 more than 400,000 Hungarians were victims of forced labor, the deportations, the brutality, the death march for the mass executions and concentration camps. The Holocaust was one in ten, the largest Nazi death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau every third victim of a Hungarian citizen. March, 19 1944. Foundation for Africa has successfully ended with the support of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry.

The opening ceremony of the new school building that has been built within the framework of a project carried out with the support of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry is taking place, on May 12, in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The five young Hungarian volunteers currently residing in Congo within the framework of the EVS have played a major role in the successful realisation of the project. They are organizing a series of support programmes in the Central African country. ffe0aaea

The school building that is due to be ceremonially opened on May 12 is a new milestone for the Foundation for Africa, and especially for College Othniel, a school maintained by the Foundation in Congo. The social-educational centre maintained and established mainly with Hungarian support has been considerably improved within the framework of the one-year-long project that has been realised with the support of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry. The five young Hungarian volunteers currently residing in Congo within the framework of the EVS (European Voluntary Service) supported by the Youth in Action Programme of the European Union have played a major role in the reconstruction works. The school has been expanded with multifunctional new classrooms, that can be combined, and with an administrative section. The new and the already existing buildings have all undergone infrastructural development, and new educational programmes have been launched while current ones have been improved in order for the new classrooms to be utilized as efficiently as possible. Locally available materials have primarily been used during the reconstruction, and the Foundation has intended to get access to materials in Congo which can later on be repaired or added to locally. Local experts and workers have taken part in the execution of the project.The short-term aim of the project has been to construct buildings for the purpose of education, to improve the infrastructure, and to expand the choice of educational programmes. The long-term aim is to enhance the standard and the prestige of the school, to provide students with the possibility of taking exams, to create new sources of income, and to launch further branches of study as well as to employ new teachers.  27dd92b9

All in all, students at College Othniel have access to education higher in standard which helps improve the quality of living. Beside granting the location for lessons, the classrooms can serve as ideal locations for organizing additional courses during which both children and adults can learn, among other things, about HIV/AIDS diseases, environmental protection, and other issues of high importance. The expansion of space, furthermore, allows the education of children coming from the most underprivileged families. The construction of a nursery classroom enables the education of children under the age of six, and parents can thus take on jobs.  d4840d12

THE 2ND INDONESIAN CHARITY FAIR ENDED WITH GREAT SUCCESS – BUDAPEST

This was the second year’s to the  3-days charity fair „DAYS OF INDONESIA”.  It came to an end on Sunday around 7 p.m. at the Syma Event and Convention Center. During the three days event ongoing music and dancers showing Java, Bali Island traditional  dancing. Even through the Indonesian music and dance is far from the Hungarian traditional folk music from time-to-time members of the audience, kids, adult and even elder folks were called upon the stage to dance together.  All those volunteers who joined the dance to the Indonesian style very soon learnt the steps and enjoyed being dancing together on and beside the stage. The Indonesian Embassy made sure the Hungarians will have an insight into the world of Indonesia by viewing the exotic cultural performances, seeing and understanding of the origin products. Many shoppers just could not  only walk by seeing the superb accessories, home decor, snake-skin bags  in original and stunning colors, the unique home-made batik clothes were even popular … no factory stuff was around. Those who bought some special items took a piece of Indonesia back home with them. Customers who shopped any item for at least 1000HUF received a coupon and during the 3 days all the coupons were gathered and drawn several times/day whereas traditional Indonesian prize were to win. Just before 6 p.m. the raffle to the main two prize took place … flight tickets  from Budapest back and forth to Jakarta and to Bali. The Budapest-Jakarta flight ticket was won by a lady working at the Indonesian Embassy in Budapest. The Budapest-Bali flight tickets was won by a Hungarian girl  and receiving her ticket to Bali said she will be traveling with her Indonesians girlfriend who is studying in Budapest and knows she will be in good hands with a perfect guide traveling to Bali. The Indonesian ambassador announced and solemnly handed over from the charity fair’s collected one million Hungarian Forint. This amount came from the donation by the supporters from the Indonesia Embassy, the international traders and the income from the sold  raffle tickets during the three days fair. The donation was handled over to the representatives from the STRETCH YOUR HAND foundation – Marianna Nagy and Hedvig Kányási who  serve at the institution of disadvantaged children’s and the proposal will go to the “Door handles” pre-school and special elementary vocational school and students’ home, based at the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplény County. …By-the-Way ….  the coming week from May, 15  to May, 17. at the Grand Market Hall in Budapest will be held  a three-days Indonesia Market Day, whereas food, drinks, crafts will be available for those who could not make it to the previous event. The Indonesia  music and dance will not end here in Budapest, after the Indonesia Days  at Grand Market Hall in Budapest, the group’s next station will be rolling over to Zagreb – Republic of Croatia to present their show.
