CURRY HOUSE IN BUDAPEST

Open from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m.

District,  VIII.,  1.  Horánszky Str.

Headed by invitation to the press presentation at the latest and pretty sure this will be a well-known place in Budapest to be visited frequently by many in the future … Why (?) Here it goes … In deed a nice little gem close to the downtown area at District VII. in Budapest.

This update will go on just like being at the theater … Act one … Stepping into the Curry House, the first impression that faced you was the smiling folks welcoming the invited press individuals. A smile answers with a smile! Even for a short time made you feel relaxed before having to rush to catch up with your day. Welcome, cocktails,  appetizers came first, then came great bits-and-peices Indian style of yums and cocktails a’la India Style shaken, not stirred by the Head Bartender, but first things first …

Act two …  Managing Director Mr.Zulkarnain Saer Khan, from Bangladesh  gave a short introduction of the house saying, Quote: ““India is very diverse: every state has its own traditions, regarding culture and gastronomy. What unifies all Indian dishes is the spices that bring them their characteristic fragrance and flavor. Outside this beautiful country, one particular word, the curry became synonymous with Indian food. Indeed, ‘curry powder’ is a key ingredient of Indian dishes. Indian dishes that are now available, at their best, in town, as Budapest’s newest Indian restaurant Curry House opened on October 5, to introduce authentic Indian dishes from ALL OVER India.  The Curry House creates contemporary and delectable dishes which are hand crafted and have been attained through the use of carefully sourced ingredients, using the finest range of natural and traditional South Asian ingredients and classic cooking techniques.”  Were also told, that the idea behind Curry House comes from the owner’s one and half years of personal research on South Asia: Indian, Pakistani, Bangladesh restaurant business in the CEE Region. He has long-term plans with Curry House. He would like to see the brand become a household name in the CEE region. By the year 2020, he is willing to open his Curry House restaurants in five other countries beside Hungary. Regarding plans for the future here at the Curry House, we were told they ain’t hiding any recipes for those folks interested in cooking the Indian way. The Curry House has plans in introduce cooking classes in the near future.  Also he is having second thoughts in opening two more Curry House in Budapest. One more here on the Pest side and one over the River Danube at the Buda side. Not yet known the whereabouts. To trigger our interest and appetite we found out have daily menus which flies the guests from over Mumbai to Calcutta, from Himachal Pradesh to South India on a culinary tour. Talking about the references, well he has many: the Sofitel Dubai, Dubai Marine Beach Resorts and The British Club in Abu Dhabi.  Head Bartender  Mr. Saurabh Mathur , from India was trained by the finest professionals. He has worked for the Hard Rock Café Mumbai, Rock Bottom Dubai, MGM Macau Hotel, Dubai Marine Beach Resorts and Rotana Group before joining the Curry House team. The Chef  Mr. Shyam Shrestha, from Nepal goes straight to our gustation in tasting. The yummies with their special spices were out of this world. He knows how to make food to perfection: fresh and ‘desi’ (very Indian).  It’s important that he serves halal meat only … For those who are not familiar what the word halal stands for, he said it is an Arabic word that means permissible and in terms of food meaning food that is permissible according to Islamic law.

Act three: After the presentation by Mr. Zulkarnain Saer Khan, the press representatives were invited to have a seat and shortly we all were Rolling in India on a gastronomy route in having a taste of the varieties of the house. Came the fabulous lunch buffet by very attentive service of the staff and their smiles were catching. I think it’s pretty fair to say this is so far the best Indian Food Place in Budapest. The quality meals, the wall painting, decorative elements on the wall, the inside atmosphere is just superb. Added to the India feeling was the low Indian music, well packed to enlose a bit your day. Talking about the food, have a word or two of the fillings in  the tasting bowls … at first the warm bread, for the bread lovers had the pleasure to taste the Naan. thereafter, busy hands brought the irresistable tasty Chicken Saag which were served in a traditional beautiful Indian bowls, just like the spinach with potatoes and, the Basmati rice … the Basmati rice makes the rice hater go back for thirds! We were in good hands when it came to drinks. Beside the cocktails, soft and fresh fruit drinks  the house has some nice India beers as the premium beer: COBRA … Mind you have a look at the bottle before putting it down. Gosh, images on the bottle reveals of an excellent designer.

The staff is a bunch of international folks, so forget the language problems here in Budapest.

From now on needn’t have to stumble upon to find the yummiest Indian food in Budapest. Hopefully, the update will interest many in the future to want to find out to see on their own and taste the delicious Indian food here close to the Downtown in Budapest.

Food is great, lots of smiles, personal attention, good folks and staff is friendly… Need anything more!?!

All I can say is yum!

FIRST CHIMNEY CAKE FESTIVAL … BAKE YOURSELF YOUR OWN  CHIMNEY CAKE!

FROM FRIDAY TO SUNDAY

OCTOBER, 11-13. 2013.

DOWNTOWN AT THE CITY HALL PARK – BUDAPEST

Hungary is heading to the fall’s season of festivals. As a newcomer in the line of festivals, this year, there will be the 1st. Chimney Cake Festival to be held Downtown at the City Hall Park,  beside the Deák Ferenc Square, Budapest. In the late morning hours on a pouring rainy day the media representatives were invited to the Gundel’s garden at the Budapest Zo,  were the organizers announced their upcoming plans for the festival.  Ms. Tünde András said, quote: “There is so many festivals in Budapest and throughout Hungary,  yet no chimney cake festival has entered the world of festivals in Hungary. This was my dream and seems like my dream will come true by organizing the first chimney cake festival.”  Not only the wide variety in flavors of chimney cakes will be around, but the visitors who join the 3 days event may also learn how to prepare the traditional  chimney cake.   Also there will be chimney cakes in all size from  XL, L, M, S and XS “.  As far as planed, there will be a baking of 50 piece of chimney cake to set a new record” … so we were told by Gáspár Bálint, one of the founders of the Vitéz Kürtős  (Chimney Cake).

Just in brief about the birth of the „kürtőskalács” chimney cake  which has several stories of original. One of them is that when the Mongols were approaching Székelyföld (to-day in Transylvania). The locals from Budvár és Réz fled into caves to hide away from the Tatars. The Tatars thought by making the locals to starve they will come out of the caves. In the meantime, not only Transylvanians, but the Tartars also ran out of food. Then a wise Transylvanians woman scraped her rest of the flour, and formed a huge chimney cake  then baked it above the ash of the fire. Later placed it on a long chopper and showed, said to the Tartars, “Look how well we are living and you’re starving,” The Tartars were so devastated that they departed from the area.

Since then the chimney cake made its way to be one of the favorite Transylvanian delights. Way back it was unimaginable to have not on the table the chimney cake as a tradition food at religious festivals and weddings. In the past years it has become an everyday delight not only in the territory of Transylvania but throughout Hungary as well.

For the  soles music will not be missing beside preparing, tasting the chimney cakes with a wide programs.  Mr. László Járási, member of the Indygo band  told us, j they wrote a particular song for the occasion of the „Kürtőskalács” Chimney Cake, which will be presented at the festival on Friday, the first day of the festival.  In the evening the Sugarloaf and the Heaven Street Seven band will roll the live music. On Saturday, the X-Factor smokers:  Ms. Adel Csobot, Ms. Timea (Timi) Antal, Mr. Gergő Baricz will be on stage. The night show will end by the Cross Band with Ms. Ildikó Keresztes. During the daylight there will be puppet shows, magic shows, fire jugglers. In addition to the performances, on the final day, children’s programs and adult Hot Jazz Band, and the Balkán Fanatik group hits will fill the air.

The mood was excellent, especially good to be a bit by the fire, as the ash warmed up ourselves on a cold and rainy autumn morning .

By participating at the press gathering, brought a  true gastronomic delicacy!

Worthwhile to note the time and dates, to go for the  various flavors of the chimney cakes!

CONTEMPORARY CULTURE FOR FOREIGN COMMUNITIES IN HUNGARY

the-lonesome-west-english-card

This year the 1st of April will be a special day in Budapest for 3 happenings!

1st. …  just like all around the world the first of April, is considered to be the „Fools Day”.

2nd. … it comes to be the day of Easter Monday.

3rd. … last but not least at all, the Átrium Film and Theater in Budapest will have

The Lonesome West „Vaknyugat”  drama play with English subtitles.

Location: District II., – 55 Margit Blvd. Budapest.

From April, 2013, the Martin McDonagh’s play The Lonesome West (title in Hungarian: Vaknyugat) will be  brought on stage not only for the Hungarian public to follow by understanding what’s going on the stage, but to welcome the foreign audience working, living and staying in Budapest – Hungary to see the play with English subtitle.

In the future, Átrium Film and Theater will stage the play one-time each month with English subtitles.

The drama’s premiere was staged in December, 30.2013. by Mr. Péter Gothár,  starring: Mr. Róbert Alföldi, Mr. István Ficza, Ms.Piroska Mészáros and Mr.Tamás Rétfalvi. This was the first co-production between of the Kultúrbrigád and the Átrium Film and Theater. Every since the first day of the premiere the house  was completely full, all the tickets are sold out in advance.

The Átrium Film and Theater, is run by the English Language Performance Theater Foundation, which is the center of the English language performances in Hungary. According to Mr.László Magács, Managing Director of the Átrium, a long-awaited gap has become to be filled by providing culture events to be seen by Hungarian artists for foreigner residents and those individuals visiting our country to come along, have the experience and enjoy the contemporary theater.

Mr. Martin McDonagh’s play is wildly popular all over the world, the staging of Mr.Péter Gothár has the sound whatever the tongue of the performance is, and since acting represents a kind of international language, those viewing the performance with subtitles can get the same entertainment as those who enjoy the Hungarian adaptation of the play by Mr. Dániel Varró which is in a par with the original script. The theatrical performance handling the settings with artistic freedom and conveying a strong director’s interpretation and vision may well enrich those coming from the Anglo-Saxon world with extraordinary experience.

Production Manager claims it is a captivating dramaturgic challenge to re-convert Mr.Dániel Varró’s translation to the original ‘dialect’ of English’ of the McDonagh’s script so as the viewer, while studying the subtitles, may also observe and enjoy the superb actors play performing on the stage.

The Lonesome West „Vaknyugat” with English language subtitles will first be performed  at 5 p.m. on Monday, April, 1. 2013, at the Átrium Film and Theater. Mind you! … it is recommended that viewers who wish to see the play with English subtitles should purchase their tickets in the back rows of the theater to be able to read the subtitles displayed above the stage.

Wishing you all a lovely evening at the Atrium on the first of April!
