The 14th Francophone Film Days Just Around The Corner.

24 films – 2 Oscar nominations – 32 Cesar nominations – 17 cities, many additional programs to be present. 

Screening dates: February, 28. – March, 10. 2024.

24 films and the biggest French stars such as: Catherine Deneuve, Léa Seydoux, Virginie Efira, Romain Duris, Vincent Cassel, Guillaume Canet – will be shown at the 14th Francophone Film Days organized by the French Institute – Budapest. The Oscar-nominated Robot Dreams and the Oscar- and César-nominated Four Sisters are also coming. The audience can personally meet the director of Salem, which debuted at Cannes, and Liv S.’s Love, nominated for 9 César Awards, and there will be a discussion about restorative justice in connection with the social drama Their Faces Are Always in Front of Me. Between March 1st and 31st, a limited selection from the program of the 14th Francophone Film Days will be presented in 16 other cities and towns throughout Hungary.

On March, 6. – 8 p.m., the film Salem, which debuted in Cannes last year, will be screened at Urania – National Film Theater. The hypnotic, lyrical work depicts the love of a black boy and a Roma girl. But in the wildest neighborhood of Marseille, the war between the two rival gangs breaks out not because the girl becomes pregnant, but because of a murder that the boy witnesses. Interview opportunity with the film’s director, Jean-Bernard Marlin.

On March, 8. - 7.30 p.m., the Swiss romantic film Liv S.’s Loves will be shown at Urania – National Film Theater. Liv, 38, recalls her old relationships in which something always went wrong. It’s time for our lovely, dreamy heroine to face her demons and accept that life is a huge emotional roller coaster. Interview opportunity with the director, Anna Luif.

30th FeHoVa Exhibition Hungexpo – Budapest

The FeHoVát exhibition taking place at the HUNGEXPO during Thursday, February, 8. – 11. to Sunday.

Those curious in Weapons, Fishing, and Hunting can open up their interest at this extrem exhibition.

More than 200 exhibitors will participate in the event. Time being FeHoVa, the FeHoVa MEOESZ International Dog Show is organized in two pavilions of HUNGEXPO.

This time, hunters and hunting-related products and services were housed in HUNGEXPO’s pavilion A, which has the largest floor area. Among the exhibitors, in addition to the Hungarians, many European countries are represented, including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia, Romania and Slovakia, but they also come to FeHoVa from countries as far away as Mauritius, Madagascar, Senegal or South Africa.

It is now a tradition that FeHoVán organizes the regular conference of the National Chamber of Agriculture for forest and wildlife management professionals. In addition to this, will there be professional presentations again this year, among other things, about the use of silencers – and visitors can try out hunting weapons at the FeHoVa shooting range.

There will be a new astronaut reaching outer space from the City of Pécs – Hungary

After 44 years, a Hungarian astronaut can make history again. Within the framework of the HUNOR – Hungarian Astronaut Program, is sending a research astronaut into outer space, who will conduct scientific experiments on the International Space Station (ISS). His mission will be nearly one-month expedition … This breaking news was announced by press officer of the PTE Rector’s Cabinet.

Dr. Ádám Schlégl is 33 year’s old who was among the 4 astronaut candidates out of more than 200 valid applications. The aircraft design engineer András Szakály, development engineer Tibor Kapu and electrical engineer Gyula Cserényi made it to the final four.

Schlégl graduated of the Faculty of General Medicine of the University of Pécs, as well as the research work required for his PhD degree. He is an orthopedic specialist at the PTE Clinical Center. In recent years, as a practicing specialist specializing in tumor surgery, university instructor, black belt karate master, he has already stood on a peak above six thousand meters in the Himalayas – the article highlights. Within his mission will contribute to the promotion of the Hungarian space industry, research institutes operating in the field of space research and, in a broader sense, the fields of natural sciences.

The specialist believes that perhaps even more people can be helped through the program, that biomedical research will have a prominent role, which will eventually appear in daily clinical practice.

They have been tested against the requirements of the European Space Agency (ESA), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the International Space Station (ISS) and Axiom Space. The applicants came from all kinds of scientific fields, according to the article, they included deep-sea archaeologists, astrophysicists, biochemists, economists, transport engineers, hunters and public transport pilots, lawyers, doctors and philosophers.The candidates were also tested on their mental performance, their body’s load capacity, their personality and their cooperation skills

Dr Ádám Schlégl will be able to carry out research work on the International Space Station in 2024 -2025.

New Season Break Through

Tokyo Vice – The first episodes of the new season  suspensefully, elegantly crafted crime drama has taken its time in getting to Hungary, but now surely made it through on HBO Max.

Tony Award winner J.T. The new season of the series created and written by Rogers, starring Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe, is now available on HBO Max.

In addition to Golden Globe nominee Ansel Elgort, Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe and Oscar nominee Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Show Kasamatsu and Ayumi Ito also appear in the main roles of the series shot in Tokyo.

In a nutshell … Tokyo Vice is based on Jake Adelstein’s sensational 2009 memoir. The Western journalist working for a publication in Tokyo takes on one of the city’s most powerful crime bosses. The series shows with rarely seen rawness and avoiding stereotypes what it’s like for a foreigner to fit in Japan.

The 10-part new season will start with two episodes on the day of the premier, and afterwards to catch up the new episode screened on HBO Max every Thursday.

True Detective: Night Country – The new episode will be available Saturday morning on HBO Max.

As the months-long winter darkness descends on a research station in Alaska, the eight scientists working there disappear without a trace. Detectives Elizabeth Danvers and Evangeline Navarro must put aside their differences to solve the case. The multiple award-winning series, this time starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, is now available on HBO Max and HBO.

The 5th episode of the highly successful crime series will be available on HBOMax on Saturday,  Morning – February, 10.  and on Monday Evening shown on HBO.

HBO has a pretty good track record when it comes to making quality mysteries. The True Detective is just one of three “The Night Of”,  “Mare of Eastown”, of the premium cable network’s repertoire that have audiences awaiting patiently each week to learn more about  Holly Sh…t …”WHODUNNIT”!?!

In 2024, True Detective: Night Country, the fourth season of the anthology show, is here to deliver a mix of horror and mystery to kick off the year.

A Magical Carneval to Scare Off Winter @ the City of Mohács

The “Busójárás” – Scary Walkers Carneval will be held between February, 8.and 13, 2024.

The folk custom has passed and kept alive by oral tradition over many years of the event in Mohács which goes back to 1687. The villagers of Mohács managed to defeat the Turkish army by scaring them away with the help of frighting wooden masks and make noise with various devices to get into a boat in order to drive the Turks away after crossing the Danube. It is however, more likely, that the tradition arrived about a decade later with the Croatian settlers, whose descendants still play an active part in the festivities. Very similar masks and costumes are found in indicating links with an ancient, pagan ritual associated with spring fertility celebrations.

Mohács, located about 200 km south of the capital, is the best-known Carneval location in Hungary. The six-day-long festival starts on with an impresive parade. This tradition is acknowledged in 2009 by UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The busó individuals are wearing big sheepskin costumes and horned wooden masks make an impressive entrance. They arrive in rowboats from across the Danube and parade through the city, making noise with cowbells and rattles, to scare away winter. Some of them arrive riding fantastical motorized or horse-drawn vehicles. Their helpers, the ‘Jankele’, are groups of children roaming the streets, dressed in rags and wearing stockings for masks, who carry sacks filled with rags to give a playful beating to the girls. The scary mask walkers return at dusk, then the hustle-and-bustle begins on the main square, where the busó people light the bonfire and this ceremony symbolically ends the winter, while over 500 busó dance around in a circle, making an even bigger racket, just to make sure that winter will definitely not come back and the people can look forward to a flourishing spring, a bountiful New Year and a good harvest.

However, it is certain that this Mohács custom has now become world famous. Year-after-year, it is surrounded by great ovation, interesting people to come not just the Hungarians but foreigners arrive to Mohács about 200 kms South of the Capital to seelive, participate at this kind of carneval. In the past, it was the custom to visit the houses and say their good wishes to the residents, they helped ward off the winter, and the people in the house rewarded them with delicious snacks. There is little historical basis for this, authentic data from the 18th century. The Mohács custom was recorded. Presumably, this legend was brought by the “sokács” of Balkan origin, thus creating a wonderful tradition that lives on to this day.

They return at dusk, when the hustle-and-bustle on the main square begins, where the busó light the bonfire and this ceremony symbolically ends the winter, from which the people can look forward to a flourishing spring, a bountiful New Year and a good harvest.

What to live through … Carnival parade … masks, buso props and other folk art objects” exhibition of the works of buso mask carvers and visiting other folk art object creators. The masquerades, folk music and dance performances, children’s activities, gastro events and handicraft fairs have had already attracted several thousand visitors.

Loreena McKennitt is a singer-songwriter, who was born to Irish and Scottish parents in Morden, Manitoba – Canada.  Loreena McKennitt brings an eclectic mix of Celtic music, pop and folk, but this many of my readers know very well … right?

McKennitt one-of-a-kind … magical, enchantingly captivating individual. Her beautiful haunting notes float around you … such a refuge in this chaotic world.

A quicky reminder of  McKennitt music path goes here … Starting her music career in 1985, her eclectic blend of pop, Celtic folk and world music has led her to achieve multi-Platinum status across the Globe, as well as earning two Juno Awards, two Grammy nominations and a Billboard Music Award for International Achievement. The tour celebrates her Juno Award-winning album The Visit, which was released in Canada in 1991 and achieved international success in 1992. Have had sold more than 14 million albums worldwide during her career. Her recordings have achieved gold, platinum and multi-platinum status in 15 countries and four continents. The filmmakers were so impressed with the singer that they asked her to act as the film’s narrator. The album was scheduled for release in November 2008.

Van Gogh experienced life and the world intensely and wanted his art to portray the great themes of life …  such as hope, love, anxiety and suffering. Explore the on-going search of an artist who was constantly trying to improve himself. In this way, you get a new view of an artist you thought you knew.

Before entering the realm of Van Gogh at the press opening, Dudi Bercovici – Hadran Events managing director, organizer of the exhibition, said Q.: “We know and understand the preferences of to-day’s generation, we know that the accelerated world has developed new habits in the field of cultural consumption as well. We trust that this production will also bring young people closer to art” … and so entered the fields of Van Gogh where it affects all the senses.
 
“If this is what it takes to attract young people, and perhaps to research van Gogh’s original works of art, then it was already worth it. After all, in the 21st century, people visit exhibitions differently, they have completely different needs and interests. And Van Gogh’s art is such a work of life , which is very special both in its use of colors and in its choice of themes,” emphasized art historian Blanka Bán
 
Here is what to expect at this unique display firsthand…
 
An expansive 20000 square meters … special light and sound effects … were able to literally walk into the paintings and immersive 360 degree taking to a journey of discovery on to one of the artist’s profilict period. Instead, of visitors rolling around artworks at an exhibition, these superb arts were floating around us, brought to life by state-of-the-art 4K technology.
 
Having watched the short film about the Starry Night, uncovering amazing many shades of the same colour was breathtaking even knowing he was color blind. Transition to the next path, the multimedia and audiovisual experience keeps getting more intense. Van Gogh’s most iconic art pieces float across the walls and floor. Time to relax … sit back on a deck chairs with lily pattern, really worth to enloose yourself watching the flowting animation of Lilies. Van Gogh developed an idealused conception of the Japanese artist which led him to the Yellow House at Arles and his attemot to form an utopian art colony there with Paul Gauguin. Showing his honour to the artist’s love everything Japanese he painted Japanese Flower Tea … (see slideshow painting) Also on the pathway on the street  The Yellow House, the enchanting neighbourhood of Café Terrace at Night or the serene wheatfield definitely unmissable. Individuals may use their skills in coloring with crayon two different sheets of  Van Gogh’s  paintings within their own artistic imagination.
 
Even though the virtual reality (VR) was a bit foggy (tried to watch it twice) being uncertain experience related that although turning our heads around to adjust the sharpness of the VR glasses, unfortunately we got a blurry picture  … a lady there said to hand-hold the VR device left-right… up-down to see clearer … it unfortunetely did not work … of course, this may only reflect the state before the official opening, and the visitors will have better luck seeing a clear picture.  Anyway walking along by (VR)  Van Gogh’s ambition to paint farmers, his search for colour and his personal interpretation of nature was deeply emotional. Mind you this spot to visit comes with extra additional fee.

The Life of Van Gogh … Vincent Van Gogh was born in Holland in 1853 and died in France in 1890. From a young age, he was preoccupied with social problems and devoted himself to supporting the poor and the sick. He got real inspiration for painting while drawing the life of miners working in the Walloon Borinage region in the late 1870s. He was unstable throughout his life, tormented by mental illnesses (epilepsy, schizophrenia), and had more and more frequent severe seizures. His paintings bear traces of his unstable, tormented personality. Excessive smoking, alcohol consumption and fatigue aggravated his health condition, and one night he cut off his own ear after a fight. After that, he decided to commit himself to the psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Later, at the age of 37, he committed suicide. The painter who sold only one painting during his life, have had now became a favorit of millions … a rock star in the art world.

On the occasion of the PAX-TV conference speakers were: Prof. Dr. Emőke Bagdy, clinical psychologist and Edwin Caruana, president of the Evangelical Alliance of Malta, pastor of the first Lutheran community in Malta, Lilla Gere, CEO of PAX TV. Zsuzsánna Albert Görgey, president of the Hungarians in Europe Association and founder of the Walk for Life movement, József Gere, one of the owners of PAX TV, Zsuzsanna Bergs, vice-president of the Cry for Life Association, Márta Popovicsné Palojtay – head of the Family and Life Association Transcarpathia, Zsuzsa Máthé, director of Szent István Institute, Ilona Keresztes, vice-president of the Together for Life Association, Ádám Balogh, pastor of Naphegy congregation.

Over the past thirty years, the number of abortions in Hungary has been gradually decreasing, as the number of 90000 registered in 1990 has decreased significantly. Still, even according to preliminary data for 2023, more than 19,000 fetuses have not received, was not given the opportunity of life.

Decisions in favour of abortion can also be influenced by the coercive force of the woman’s life situation and environment. However, experience shows that the vast majority of marriages break down after abortion, and suicides can increase sixfold among those who abort their fetuses. A male-female relationship has at least three elements: passion, intimacy and commitment, of which have to work for  the two of them.

The focus of the professional event was on the miracle of life from conception to death. In addition to abortion, speakers at the event also touched on taboo topics such as addiction, which affects almost 4% of the population. This includes active euthanasia, the support of which has increased significantly in Hungary over the past 10 years. Violence, wars and knowledge about climate change that affect our sense of personal security and belief in the future multiply the anti-life decisions.

The right to respect the life of another person has been the subject of heated debates in recent decades. Although euthanasia is increasingly supported by Hungarians in line with international trends, the decision about the end of life is not a simple matter to be decided. In addition to reasons of conscience and faith, allowing the right to active euthanasia can become an obligation and an expectation for doctors, it can weaken the cohesion of society, and it can also generate new problems, which was also a topic for the conference speakers.

Between 1956 and 2022, there were 6.49 million unborn births in Hungary. The events of ’56 also contributed greatly to this issue.

At the end of the press event, the symbolic signing of PAX TV’s mission statement also took place.

Footy Lovers of All Time …”The Sloth and Carp” Theatrical Preformance – Budapest

A true story about two Hungarian football players and coaches… Football, friendship and courage: The story of István Tóth – Sloth(Hungarian nickname: Potya) and Géza Kertész – Carp (Hungarian nickname: Lajhár)

On Tuesday, January 30, 6.30 p.m., on the occasion of the commemorations of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Italian Cultural Institute of Budapest presented Compagnia Carnevale (The company was established in 2016 ) play title: Il Bradipo e la Carp directed by Antonio Carnevale, whom took the stage with Riccardo Stincone.

The play is a theatrical adaptation of Roberto Quartarone‘s book “Two Heroes on a Bench”, published by InContropiede. The premiere was @ the Federico Fellini Room of the Italian Cultural Institute (District VIII., 8. Bródy Sándor Street – Budapest) in Italian language with Hungarian subtitles.

Géza Kertész and István Tóth both kicked the ball together on the football fields in the early 1900s, at the Ferencváros Sport Club together. István Tóth, one of the prominent figures of the green and white club, nicknamed “Potya”, while Géza Kertész “Lajhar” named due to his slow movement, although he was also a highly skilled footballer.

The two Hungarians, considered prominent representatives of the “Hungarian school” found eachother again in Italy, this time as coaches: Géza Kertész – “Lajhár” on the bench of Catania, Atalanta, Lazio and Rome, István Tóth “Potya” as coach of Triestina and Inter. The play portrays the figures of the two protagonists through the use of various comic and tragic elements, while being an entertaining experience stretches, makes the audience think about the story of a friendship, love for Italy, courage, loyalty to the homeland and honor during World War II. in the shadow of horrors. Their friendship was anti-fascist during World War II. Consolidated in months of resistance … they contribute in saving the lives of dozens of politically persecuted and Jews and until the last moment of their lives, early February 1945 they were shot dead by Nazi soldiers at the Buda Castle.

In 2018, the life of the “The Lajhár” and “The Potya” were performed for the first time all over Italy’s regions, and more than 150 performances was played in front of the large number of audience. In Italy the play received various accolades. The play was finally introduced to the Hungarian invited audience.
