HERE WE GO … WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE 20TH TITANIC FILM FESTIVAL – BUDAPEST!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

NOT TO BE MISSED … HERE IS A QUICKY … A SELECTION OF INDEPENDENT AMERICAN MOVIES!

The section  goes off with the title  …  “Living In America” which includes five features and one of them is  “How to Follow Strangers” at its world premiere. After its screenings the   director, Chioke Nassor. Story in brief … In the section the drama of a single mother with two teenage sons will run, a musical comedy, the story of a teenage girl who is in love with her brother and that of a female alcoholic school teacher. Until April, 13 when the festival comes to an end, there is still a chance to catch up with all the films of the in the section of  “Living In America”.

“A Little Closer”  from  Matthew Petock is his first feature which is situated in his birthplace, Richmond, Virginia. Sheryl, a single mother, is desperately looking for a new man who can be a father to her two sons. She goes to a weekly dating evening in the hope of meeting her dream prince while her eldest son, Marc (16) is still a virgin and gets sexual advice from an older boy. The younger son, Stephen (12) falls in love with the teacher everybody hates. The family members have similar problems, but that does not bring them closer together – Petock cleverly makes the distance between them tangible.

The world-premier of the drama “How to Follow Strangers” is at the 20th Titanic Festival. This first feature of his has two interconnected stories, the first of which is inspired by a true account of a woman who died in her Manhattan apartment and remained there a year before her body was found, decomposing in a crisp Chanel suit.A young man in the film named Casey, becomes so obsessed with this urban tragedy that he fakes his own disappearance, wondering if anyone will notice. The second storyline begins when Ellie, a young woman who sees Casey everyday as part of her regular commute actually does notice that he goes missing. The audience can meet Chioke Nassor, the director of this remarkable film on 12nd April after the 6.30 p.m. screening at the Örökmozgó  and Filmmúzeum cinemas.

The third film of the section is a comedy directed by Gary King,  “How Do You Write a Joe Schermann Song” is about an immensely skilled songwriter, Joe who scrapes together a living while waiting for that one perfect moment to step into the spotlight. When opportunity comes knocking, Joe leaps at the chance to write the songbook for an off-Broadway show. Inspiration comes in the form of Summer, an aspiring actress with an incredible voice that Joe thinks would be perfect for the lead, but this leads to private life conflicts. Director Gary King, who also wrote the film, opts to eschew spectacular dance numbers and elaborate costumes in favor of a more intimate, character-driven narrative.

The “Unspeakable Act” deals with the controversial theme of incest within a close-knit, yet strangely detached family dynamic. Director Dan Sallitt’s film relies far more on the strength of its character development than it does on gaudy sensationalism to push home his message. Jackie is a 17 old average teenage girl, filled with new emotions and fresh doubts about the world in which she lives. But she also carries a secret: she’s deeply in love with her brother Matthew. Matthew, who doesn’t share Jackie’s feelings. He’s heading off to college and has finally met his first girlfriend.

The dramedy “Smashed” is directed by James Ponsoldt was awarded a Special Jury Prize at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. When we first meet functioning alcoholic Kate Hannah, she’s already close to rock bottom. She takes a shot of whiskey to brace herself for a day of teaching first grade. When she vomits at school, a student asks if she’s pregnant. Desperate to disguise her hangover, she lies and says she is. It’s a deception that could cost her career, but also can save her life. Ponsoldt’s Smashed traces its heroine’s downward spiral – from smoking crack in a drunken lapse of judgment to an outrageous episode in a convenience store – with insight, daring and profound empathy.

The audience can see an intimate musician portrait of Adam Green, a Grammy award-winning road movie with Mumford & Sons, an incredible late-in-life rise of a 62 years old soul singer, a guitar prodigy and his fight with the degenerative Lou Gehrig’s disease. A documentary about the Pulp, the history of UK record shops. A rock ’n’ roll swindle. Last but not least debut to a thriller … Plan B’s.

„How to Act Bad” is Dima Dubson’s documentary debut about New York songwriter, filmmaker, rock star Adam Green. During the making of this intimate portrait Dubson closely followed his friend for two years, whose family history is also exciting as his great-grandmother was Kafka’s fiancée.

Sara Sugarman’s fourth feature „Vinyl” is a comedy about an ageing rock star who goes to the funeral of a member of his former band where he meets the rest of the band and they end up jamming again. As the music industry is too youth-obsessed they make the great rock ’n’ roll swindle: they say that the song has been made by a Welsh teenage band.

This year’s Grammy Award-winningBig Easy Express” is a road movie documentary which follows three indie folk bands – Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Old Crow Medicine Show and Britain’s Mumford & Sons – as they team for a 2011 tour, traveling aboard an antique train the result of which both Woody Guthrie and John Steinbeck would be proud of. Filmmaker Emmett Malloy became famous for making of several music videos for the likes of Metallica, Oasis, The Black Eyed Peas etc. Poull Brien’s documentary Charles Bradley: „Soul of America” charts the incredible late-in-life rise of 62 year-old soul singer Charles Bradley, whose debut album rocketed to Rolling Stone magazine’s top 50 albums of 2011. Abandoned by his mother as a child, Bradley faced homelessness, illiteracy, the murder of his beloved brother and a nearly fatal illness.

The debut feature „Ill Mannors” of Ben Drew, a platinum-selling rapper and soul singer who records under the alias Plan B, is an exciting thriller. This multi-character drama which plays in London with a crack-addicted prostitute, a dealer and an ex-dealer, a runaway single mother and a would-be teen model, is partly inspired by real events. The film is a social critique of urban crime and its social causes.

The documentary Jason Becker: „Not Dead Yetdirected by Jesse Vile is the extraordinary story of guitar prodigy Jason Becker and his fight with the degenerative Lou Gehrig’s disease. The film charts the life of Jason Becker from his early years learning guitar till now, twenty years later, still making music with his casts. It is really a story about the strength of the human spirit. Eve Wood’s „The Beat Is the Law”: Fanfare for the Common People is a history of the amazing Sheffield music scene, from early 80’s post-punk through the house boom and into Britpop. The film culminates with Pulp’s triumph at the 1995 Glastonbury Festival, where as last-minute replacement headliners, the band delivered the era-defining song Common People. Last Shop Standin”  directed by Pip Piper and inspired by the book of the same title by Graham Jones uncovers why nearly 2000 record shops have already disappeared across the UK since the rapid rise of record shops in the 1960’s. It will be screened with a short film titled Minor/Major: The TV on the Radio Tour Documentary”, a portrait of the band TV on the Radio as they become a major label success from indie darlings to.

Film delicacies of musical topics can also be found in the selection of contemporary Irish films, titled Emerald Island. The biographical „Good Vibrations” tells the story of the legendary, radical Belfast punk-rock rebel, Terri Holey whilst the Finnish feature „Miss Blue Jeans” in the Nordic Lights section is a fine rock film, coming of age story and period movie about the 1970’s punk and new wave era.

Source from Museum of Fine Arts … „Following in the wake of the successful Mind and Body (2008), Lucien Hervé 100 (2010) and The Birth of Photography (2012), the Museum of Fine Arts. The Helmut Newton Foundation founded by the artist’s wife. Helmut Newton was one of the most influential figures of twentieth-century photography whose name is synonymous with the revolutionary photography published in famed fashion magazines. The novel themes and positioning of his works often shocked and scandalised people, yet it cannot be denied that he transformed photography used in the advertising of his day. His central subjects were nudity, power, fashion, money, sensuality and brutality. He cannot simply be coined a fashion, a nude or a portrait photographer since his work over five decades spans several genres and is thus difficult to categorize. He was attracted to taking pictures from a young age and when he grew up photography became a true passion for him. Thanks to the advertising and fashion shoots he did for noted designers and newspapers photography not only brought Helmut Newton a lot of pleasure but also created a comfortable livelihood for him. He said that for him the only thing of interest was the shape of a model’s body, although through his pictures he created his own peculiar atmosphere which distinguished him from other photographers. Viewers of his pictures are shocked and captivated by his unusual choice of subjects and dispassionate approach, yet given an insight into the intimate moments of the private lives of others and a livelihood for him. The portrait photos of his models are completely different and characterised by intimacy and cold detachment. The list of celebrities he took photographs of is almost endless and it is suffice to mention but a few: Monica Belluci, Catherine Denevue, David Bowie, Claudia Schiffer, Jodie Foster,Sigourney Weawer, Linda Evangelista, Gena Rowlands, Madonna, Kate Moss, Carla Bruni, Ornella Muti, Cindy Crawford, Anthony Hopkins, Ralph Fiennes, and Andy Warhol.  Newton was born on 31 October 1920 under the name Helmut Neustädter in Berlin, where he completed his schooling. He was already drawn to photography when still a child, which was when he bought his first camera. Between 1936 and 1938 he worked as an apprentice to the portrait and fashion photographer Yva  (Else Neuländer-Simon). As a response to the increasingly totalitarian rule of the Nazis he left Germany in 1938 for Singapore, taking with him nothing else but two cameras. From here he went on to Australia in 1940 and served in the Australian army for five years. He obtained Australian citizenship in 1946. In 1948 he married one of his former models, the actress June Brunell, with whom he lived for  the rest of his life. During their marriage his wife also began to take  photographs under the professional name of Alice Springs and made a film about her husband.  In 1956 Newton signed a contract with the British Vogue magazine in London, which he broke eleven months later. After this he went to Paris and on returning to Melbourne he found a position with the Australian branch of Vogue. In 1961 he moved to Paris, where he worked for the French publisher of Vogue, and in addition to this he took photographs for the British versions of the magazine: Queen and Elle. In 1971, while in New York, Newton suffered a heart attack, from which he recovered.  In 1975 his first exhibition was staged in Paris’ Nikon Gallery, and in the following year the first volume of his book White Women was published. In 1981 Helmut and June moved from Paris to Monaco, from which time they would travel to Los Angeles to spend the winters there. In 2000 a large-scale retrospective exhibition was organised for Newton in Berlin’s New National Gallery to celebrate his 80th birthday, the material of which was also later exhibited in London, New York, Tokyo, Moscow, Prague and other venues. In 2003 a formal agreement came into being between the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz) to establish the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, which opened in 2004, not long after Newton’s death.

The three photographic series exhibited by the Museum of Fine Arts are built on the summary works titled Helmut Newton’s Illustrated, Private Property and Gun for Hire, which were are also published in book form.  The photographs provide a cross-section of Newton’s nude and fashion snaps ranging from his early pictures to a posthumously published series. Helmut Newton’s Illustrated contains a selection of his photos from a period of ten years published by the artist himself to enable him to put together his own selection that would show of his work independently of the wishes of editors, clients and specific exhibitions. He produced four editions in total: two were published in 1987 titled Sex and Power and Pictures from an Exhibition. In 1991 these were followed by „I Was There”, in which he probed into issues related to truth and falsehood. He produced the last of the four in 1995, the cover of which shows Newton himself lying on the ground and leaning on his elbow on the banner of one of his own nude pictures; the volume’s title is Dr. Phantasma. The titles of the volumes say at least as much as its themes and each issue soon became popular among collectors. With its provocative mish…mash of nudity, journalistic shots and portraits courting sensationalism these volumes became defining and powerful visual documents of the 80s and 90s– The Private Property – Portfolios contains a total of 45 photographs taken between 1972 and 1983, including fashion photos, portraits and erotically charged pictures. The exhibited photos were made by Thomas Conilvio, who achieved photo-lab archival quality by slightly toning the pictures in a selenium bath. The volume A Gun for Hire surveys Newton’s fashion photos from the 1960s right up to his last work he made for the Italian Vogue – photos he took as a “gun for hire”. Included among his clients were Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Versace, Blumarine and Mugler. The title comes from a much quoted saying by Helmut Newton, “Some people’s photography is an art. Mine is not. If … If they happen to be exhibited  in a gallery or a museum, that’s fine. But that’s not why I do them. I’m a gun for hire.”- “Newsweek”, 02/02/04. As he said himself, his success was not thanks to the museums but rather to consumer society. He started out from the conditions set by the clients and a given budget, but he freely reinterpreted the collections, thus creating his own inimitable mishmash of elegance, consumerism and fashion photography.”

Just to keep in mind … Some of the displayed pictures have an explicitly sexual content … therefore it is recommended only for the adult visitors to visit the exhibition.
