At the Tornai Winery – 7th Somló “Juhfark” Festival 2022

Venue: Tornai Winery – Somlójenő – Somló Hill – Hungary

Lately visited Somló upon invitation to get to know the 17 wineries bringing 27 Juhfark delights at the Somló Juhfark Festival.

The representative presentation of Juhfark – (Sheep Tail) was organized for the seventh time with the co-operation of winemakers from Somló, where the public could participate in tasting the best batches of the past years wines and get to know the winemakers personally, ask questions, talk about their techniques of wine making, the characteristics of the wines, taste and taste again.

The Somló Juhfark (“Sheep Tail” – in English) – (staying with the original Hungarian name from now one) Holiday, was organized a special walking tasting event in many ways in providing a special experience for the wine-loving public. At the Festival one of the most popular wineries were present at the same time with their best wines. We were introduced to know the characteristics of the wine region. We could also follow the handiwork from the winemaker within tasting their items. These wines were completely different types and characters of Juhfark.

In brief back in time long the way to to-day’s Somló Winery … Endre Tornai after returning home from the war, he restarted the family farm. Instead of the grapes he lost in Badacsony, he bought an outdated plantation in Somló, barely two months old … began his small cellar the Tornai cellar. It is one of the oldest of this kind on a 0.7 ha wine-land, today expanded 50 ha. The 450 ha lands on the hill side are now cultivated by 3000 landowners becoming small plots. For the first time it has been introduced here. The process …the juice is left to stay in contact with the grapes skin for approx. 7 – 14 hours. Then yielding a brightly color, full-bodies white wine with charastic acidic-mineral taste mixed elegantly with fresh, fruity fragrance. Several grapes varietals are planted in the field … Riesling, Juhfarok, Szürkebarát, Furmint, Hárslevelű, Zeus, Zenit and Pinot Blanc. The Hárslevelű 2011 earned great gold medal at the international wine competition in Verona. In 2003 received a gold medal in Montreal and Düsseldorf and several other countries.

The wine of Somló and the Tornai winery has for ages been known … taken as medicine … In the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and beyond the Somló wines were claimed to possess medicinal qualities. Many healing powers were recorded. The wine was in favor in the court of Habsburgs, as drinking Somló wine on the royal wedding night was believed to increase the chance to conceive a male child. So along the way from 1990 and today it became, known as the “wedding night wine”

Back to highlight the festival … Juhfark and Somló is a special pairing with a mineral flavor, inimitable wine. The unique volcanic character of the mountain can best be seen … tasted … in the bottles of Juhfark wines.

Participating wineries were: 5 Ház Wine Estate, Barcza Winery, Bogdán Estate, Csetvei Winery, Csordás-Fodor Winery, Dobosi Winery, Fekete Pince, Hegedűs-Szabó Winery, Kolonics Winery, Kőfejtő Cellar, Kreinbacher Estate, Somlói Vándor Cellar, Szabó Winery, Szalai Cellar, Tomcsányi Family Estate, Tornai Winery, Zzirai Winery

At the Tornai winery can not only enjoyed the wines, but also beauty of the varied golden field of “Grapeville” at Somló.
In addition to the walking tasting, we could participate in additional programs. One workshop was a ride on a special little bus coming to pick us up just for this occasion, rolling up-and-down Somló hilly side on the vineyard tour titled “Journey around Somló”. During our ride ongoing tasting was held.

We were also able to take part in a special museum-cellap, where the history of generations in winemakers of the Tornai’s family tree and now rare wine making tools were introduced.

At another workshop, we got to know more about the Somló’s vineyards … also tasting excellent wines, older vintages and famous wines from this great wine regions, comparing them with each batch of Juhfark. Was told that the Somló Juhfark wine has crossed the Ocean to the States and there it goes through a web auction … maybe a collect or a deeply wine lover has already cherished a bottle of Juhfark.

Part .2  Kékfrankos Wine and Gastronomy Experience 2022 Festival’s day continuing with ongoing tasting, also at Ferenc Liszt Conference and Cultural Center, organized by Effix-Marketing Ltd. Civils for Fertőtájért, Sopron Fertő Tourism Development Nonprofit Ltd. By many known as Sopron Wine Region is home to the largest Kékfrankos plantation in the country. An area of about 1000 hectares covering two-thirds of the wine region. The most beautiful wines of the Sopron Wine Region were presented by 33 exhibitors, including 20 wineries with 70 featured items offering to taste and giving an insight by the winemakers into the treasures of this region . It was impossible to taste all the excellent items (maybe next time) so everyone gave a try in tasting some varieties. Participating Winemakers were: Bónis-Reitter Winery, Bruckner Winery, Etyeki Kúria Borgazdaság Sopron wines, Fényes Cellar, Gangl Winery, Hauer Cellar, Hermann Cellar, Horváth Wine, Iváncsics Cellar, Jandl Cellar, Lővér Cellar, Luka Winery, Pfneiszl Estate, Steigler Cellar, Stubenwoll Cellar, Taschner Wine and Champagne House, Töltl Winery, Vincellér Wine Estate, Winelife Winery, Zachár Wine. Horváth Imre Winery … Is a small family winery in Sopron has been engaged in ecological, organic viticulture for 10 years. Wines matured in traditional oak, acacia barrels and stainless steel tanks and are bottled – sold as draft wine.  Produce: Furmint, Yellow Muscovy, Viognier, other white wines. Red wines: Cabernet franc, Cabernet sauvignon, Kékfrankos, Merlot, Pinot noir, Syrah, Zweigelt, Rosé. Red wines: Cabernet franc, Cabernet sauvignon, Kékfrankos, Merlot, Pinot noir, Syrah, Zweigelt, Rosé. Cannot deny, favorite of mine was the Sopron Syrah – 2017  which had an almost black appearance with the smell of blackberry and cherry, being big-bodied wine with well-balanced tannin and the spiciness of black pepper. Bónis-Reitter Winery … Red wine ZOAN – 2019 … as was said: “We have been waiting for this vintage for years to make the flagship wine of our cellar, a large-structured, thick-textured Kékfrankos.” Bánfalva was recorded as settlements as early as the 13th century. This Kékfrankos wine has medium-intensity plum and black cherry aromas, bright acidity and medium tannin. Taschner Wine and Champagne HouseWhy/When/Where named Kékfrankos? The answer is simple . This grape variety is so closely associated with the wine region that the locals even keep an anecdote namely Kékfrankos. According to the legend … “When the new war of Napoleonic France and the Habsburg Empire broke out on April 10, 1809. Napoleon’s soldiers marched towards Győr in 1809 and they also occupied Sopron. Although no major battles took place, the soldiers lingered here for five months. The daily ration they received from the city was half a lime wine, which meant 3.5-4 deciliters, but this was not enough for the majority. And if someone wanted more, they had to pay for it. Soldiers had two types of notes, the less valuable red franc and the more valuable blue franc. The resourceful wine farmers of Sopron, the Poncichters, of course only accepted in exchange only the blue franc for their wine, hence the name Kékfrankos – Blue Franc. Latest wine from Taschner Soproni Kékfrankos 2020/2021 is the flagship wine of the Sopron region. According to research,  its grapes originates from the Caspian Sea region, and which were brought by our conquerors. It is extremely widespread in the Carpathian basin and owes its popularity to its reliability and characterful wine. Its wine is characterized by a rich tannin acid content and has a deep ruby red color. Vincellér Wine Estate – Tasting Vincellér Fizzi Miska 2021, semi-sweet sparkling wine and Vincellér Late Zenith 2018 was top on my taste. The winery is owned by three families namely: Molnár, Pieler and Sásdi. The winery made its first two wines in 1986, from the Kékfrankos installed in 1972 and from a Zweigelt made in 1979. In 1996 they had bought the Széchenyi Cellar at Fertőboz. Their basic (Vincellér) and selected (Molnártiti Selection) wines are popular. Steigler Cellar is located in the heart of Sopron’s poncichter district on Balfi Road, built centuries ago, under the dwelling houses. Was told by Tamás Varga winemaker on the spot that even before Roman times, the unmistakable soil and micro climate encouraged the people who settled here to plant grapes and make wine. According to written records, the Celts were the first to taste the wines of the Fertő region. No wonder known by many Steigler Cellar located in Hungary they are the oldest wine region and carries on the millennia-old traditions in creating organic wines. The plantation has green veltelín, zweigelt, kékfrankos, pinot noir, merlot, cabernet sauvignon varieties. Anyone who has delved even a little into the history of the Sopron wine region already knows that the farmers did not build their cellars in the vineyards, but down floor in their houses. That is why Sopron’s downtown and the farmer’s quarter hide many interesting cellars and cellar systems. The vineyards located in beautiful surroundings are therefore out of sight of the guests. Some farmers recognized this, which is why they organize special and exciting adventure tours to their wine region. The purpose of the adventure tour is to discover the Sopron wine region, bring nature and vineyards closer, admire the landscape, and see where the Sopron Kékfrankos is growing today.

The locals of Sopron says: “If you go home from Sopron without tasting Kékfrankos, it’s as if you haven’t been here”… agree!

It was one of the first to receive the Budapest Sport Office last November in recognition of its decades of activity in the field of promoting an active lifestyle. Extended Temporary Exhibition Entitled Alternative Cosmos @ Zsolnay Cultural Quarter – Pécs

Űr exhibition at Pécs

The temporary exhibition titled “ŰR” – SPACE the alternative cosmos has been extended until September, 25. 2022. and awaits those who are thirsty for space experiences in the m21 Gallery of the numerous domestic private collections, or works made especially for this in the form of unique installations. All of the works of art are related to outer space, and there is even a work of art that literally: follows a space probe orbiting the earth, detects its presence and makes it all perceptible to us with artistic means (visual elements and sounds) (Lóránd Széchenyi- Nagy: Kozmikus Frekvensiák – Solar Probe / his site-specific installation M21).
Visitors can also get a taste of the accounts following the landing on the Moon, which questioned and organized the landing on the Moon under artificial conditions. Not to mention the clips, animated films or contemporary TV series that all present the ideas of space from the 60s and 70s, and among which the scientific slide film cannot be missing!
One of the most exciting parts of the exhibition is that visitors can try on Antal Lakner’s Passive Dress installation, which is both surprising and interactive, as the dress stuffed with weights is meant to simulate twice the gravity of the earth, so they can experience what astronauts experience under the weight of the gravitational force on their bodies during a rocket launch they felt.

A special acoustic and visual experience is the video installation by Sándor Vály and Éva Polgár, which records and plays the Milky Way constellation on the organ! But classic works of art and paintings are also not missing from the exhibition, the rooms of which can be approached after the docking (Gyula Várnai’s video installation) through strange sluices (the works of Gryllus Ábris, Balázs Deim, Ottó Vincze and Lajos Csontó) and separated by these for example, the thematic rooms entitled Planet of Observers, Space Museum, Invisible Planets and Domesticated Constellations.

At the end of the exhibition, Lili Pethő‘s cosmic-themed posters move with the help of a mobile phone application, and visitors can even send a message from space, during which they act as astronauts. or they can take a picture together with aliens.

Astronomer László Kiss and László Százados, curator of the exhibition, will give a guided tour during the Szamárfül Festival on August, 27 from 5 p.m. entitled Invisible Planets.

It promises to be an interesting program for families and children to see outer space and the Globe we live in from a different perspective.

Calling attention by Aggie Reiter

Leslie Mandoki – Motto …”It is always important to build bridges and easy on the wavelength of music.”

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Mandoki Soulmates … visited the band rehearsal for the 30th anniversary concert, which took place in the Bem Klub upstairs room (District, I., 6. Bem rakpart Budapest). … (Just mentioning (editor’s comment) this historical venue was in the old days the unforgiven gatherness, controlled spot for individuals /groups/ bands to come together by the existing government. One of the famous “Sirius” group rehersaled here in the late 70s (one of my favorite musician Jackie Orszaczky known personally) the group style was characterized by the progressive jazz-rock trend, which did not fit into the “like!” of the dictatorship at the time being, saying that this was pure Western ape. Mandoki sometimes visited wayback that venue and like what he have heard by them.)

After three own music rehearsal songs played together by icons such as Al Di Meola, Randy Brecker, Bill Evans, Jack Bruce, Mike Stern, Ian Anderson, Richard Bon and Takács Tamás Hungarian singer (Carthago band) also joined the international team showing just a peck into the forthcoming next day concert to hear at the Szentháromság Square across the River Danube on the Buda side of Budapest.

Following the rehearsal was held to the media representative a short press hearing, where in brief Mandoki introduced the group to hold the concert tomorrow. Thereafter told his story of how and when left Hungary. The world-renowned musician and music producer Leslie Mandoki, lived in Germany and California since 1975, when decided to defect at the age of 22 – together with his two fellow artists, Gábor Csupó and László Szűcs. Leslie Mandoki, who has a diverse and successful musical career spanning several decades, was the music director of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s campaign, the composer of Disney films, German and American TV films, and, among other things, the pride of his narrower homeland, Bavaria: Bayern Munich and Volkswagen-Audi-Porsche he is also the musical director and consultant of the concern.

He artistically took care of the records of stars such as Chaka Khan, Phil Collins, Lionel Richie, Jennifer Rush. Leslie founded a world-famous record studio 40 years ago, which is the reason for an extra anniversary celebration this year. From the beginning members were Randy Brecker, Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull), Al Di Meola, Mike Stern, Chris Thompson (Manfred Mann’s Earth Band), David Clayton-Thomas (Blood Sweat & Tears), Bill Evans (Miles Davis Band) , Bobby Kimball (Toto), Peter Maffay, Nick van Eede (Cutting Crew), Jesse Sibenberg (Supertramp) and John Helliwell (Supertramp).

Few thoughts he shared: at the press gathering:“Q” The team is based on common human, moral and artistic values, and respectful humility towards the audience. 30 years ago we agreed that we would only communicate directly with each other, leaving managers, concert organizers, record companies and lawyers out of the equation. This is the only way to bring together and keep together this team of world stars in such an excellent way.” Also added “Q” His fellow musicians “Soulmates” is also unique thanks to the world stars: the frontman and bandleaders of the legendary bands do not simply form a band, but also a deepen their community of values.

The 30th anniversary concert starting at 7 p.m. on August, 19 @  the Buda Castle, Szentháromság Square, will be open to the public free of charge as part of the St. Stephen’s Day celebration series.

In briefly about the next day’s concert… Strong winds, thunder, heavy lightning lightened up the sky and
due to the storm approaching the capital, the organizers informed Mandoki that the open-air 30-year anniversary concert performance had to be interrupted, but the musician did not want to accept the decision therefore the organizers announced that they would turn off the electricity and called on the audience to leave quickly.

This year, the award of the Hungarian Confectionery Industry Association was presented for the 25th time, and just as in the previous years, the ceremonial award ceremony and press conference was held at Zila Cafe and Krisztina Confectionery @ Budapest.

A total of 74 ice creams entered the Ice Cream of the Year competition in four categories this year. There was no mandatory taste this year, the aim of which is to promote classic and traditional high-quality artisanal ice cream, nothing set limits to the creativity of the contestants. This year 12 ice creams made it to the finals in the handicraft categories, which the contestants had to make in the presence of the jury. 27 ice creams competed for the places in the category of raw material producers-distributors.

Before and after the ceremony, were also available for tasting the finalist ice creams of the craft categories, 27 competition ice creams of the company category.

The aim of the competition is to promote traditional, high-quality artisanal ice cream, so that the Hungarian confectionery can offer its guests even better quality ice creams, thereby creating a demand among people for healthy and high-quality, artisanal products. This year, it was possible to enter again in the “Free” category, with ice creams that cannot contain added sugar, gluten, lactose, or milk protein. These ice creams are becoming more and more popular among guests with conscious nutritional needs and guests with various food intolerance.

Competition ice creams could only be made with natural basic and additional ingredients, flavored and decorated exclusively with self-made dressings. This year, the “M – Free” category was announced again, in which competitors could enter ice creams free of added sugar, gluten, lactose and milk protein.

Árpád Szűcs, the chairman of the professional jury, said: “They sought balance and creativity in fixtures and decor. The reason the sky high price 500HUF is increasing – along with many other products the price of raw materials, their lack in many cases, or the lack of labor. In addition, according to the current regulations, ice cream in cones must be sold with 27% VAT, which means a great burden on the operation of pastry shops and ice cream parlors.”

Anyway, no doubt and regardless to the high price of ice cream within rich yummy flavors has no individual age limit when it comes to different yummy melting flavors that’s for sure.
