ANITA B. – ITALIAN DRAMA – MITTELCINEMAFEST – BUDAPEST – 2014

ANITA B

Indeed an unexpected Holocaust story. A drama of  a girl who finds a form of redemption after the horrors of the concentration camp.

Director: Roberto Faenza, Screenplay: Roberto Faenza – Edith Bruck, Actors: Eline Powell – Robert Sheehan – Antonio Cupo – Nico Mirallegro , Andrea Osvárt

Before the premiere screening cinema award gala took place whereas the  Roberto Faenza, the film’s director received the Mittelcinemafrest Lifetime Achievement  Award. The sculptor was made by István Madarassy , which was handled over by the representative of the Municipality of Budapest. At the gala ceremony was also present. HE Maria Assunta  Accili – Ambassador of Italy to Budapest, HE Ilan Mor – Ambassador of Israel to Budapest and also Director of the Italian Cultural Institution.

The Film is based on the chapters of Edith Bruck’s life who was a Holocaust survivor, held in concentration camps when she was still a child. In 1954 she eventually settled in Italy. In 2009 she published How Many Stars Twinkle in the Sky, which won her the Viareggio Prize.

The film is about Anita B, a Jewish girl of Hungarian origin who has emerged alive from Auschwitz, is taken in after the war by her Monika her surviving aunt. Monika, the thirty year old sister of Anita’s father. Monika, however, does not liked to be called „Aunt” and receives her niece with something less than enthusiasm. Monika lives with her husband Aron with little Roby, their son in a small town int he mountains of Czechoslovakia. Another family member is living with them, the young Eli, Aron’s brother, whose philosophy of life can be summed up as follows: „Men want to unbutton their pants, women think about love”.

In brief  … Sudetenland , the town they live before the war had a large German population. The former inhabitants have been forcibly ejected, their homes taken over by returning prisoners and refugees. There is an air of increasing tension in the place, as the communists prepare to seize power.

To begin with after her arrival, Anita finds herself a virtual prisoner once more; this time because of a lack of any ID documents. She cannot leave the house. Those people she does come in to contact with, however, all seem intent on forgetting the recent horrors of Shoa. Instead, they rather go out to dance, enjoy themselves, and listen to popular american songs On Air by the Voice of America, even though the Russians disturb the radio transmission across the Iron Curtain.

Anita too has her dreams, but unlike the others is determined not to turn her back on the past. She’s a spirited girl, full of hope for the future, finding her strength in the memory of her parents, themselves both killed in the camps. She is disconcerted by that refusal to remember on the part of all those around her. No-one in the family … not even Eli, with whom she soon embarks on a passionate affair … seems even to want to think about what has happened, let alone talk about it. It’s as if everyone feels ashamed of having survived.

The denial of pain blocks the path to the truth. Anita instinctively knows this, but when she tries to breach that collective wall of silence that surrounds her, she finds herself being pushed back. So, if she wants to talk to anyone about her beloved and lost parents, she has to do so with little Roby, aged two, who listens to her happily but doesn’t understand.

In that melting pot of languages and nationalities that is the Central Europe of those days, once Anita is able to get out of the house she meets a whole range of unforgettable characters: among them Uncle Jacob, a musician who seems to be the conscience of the community; Sarah, the dynamic „ferrywoman” who organizes the refugees’ clandestine passage to Palestine; and young David, who like Anita is an orphan, who lost his parents in a non less tragic circumstances. Anita and David work at the same sewing workshop and soon become friends. One day he suddenly vanishes, in pursuit of his own dream. On the same day, just on the brink of womanhood, she finds herself pregnant with Eli’s baby. The story does not end here, so sincerely recommend the film viewing. The film was Italian speaking, sometimes Yiddish, with Hungarian subtitled, but hopefully it will come out in some places with English subtitle as well.

The film was released this year on January, 16  in Italy and screened  Israel and now at the MITTELCINEMAFEST – XIIth Italian Film Festival now showing in Budapest – Hungary … Coming  soon to Krakow, Bratislava and Prague.

There was no  lack of a bunch of  musicians, singers, actors and sporty folks to be a part of something famous on the „Famous Night Party” at Downtown on the Elisabeth Square’s  at the Prosit Bar and its „Fröccs Terasz” – Pub Terrace!

Invitation was to unwind your day with Scotland’s number one whiskey in the heart of the city, to have a sip of the delicious Grouse Famous cocktails, battling with endless mouth-watering snacks, full meals and delicate cakes was a real challenge, but caused no harm. Excellent Cheif overthere, worthwhile to drop by any time of the day to have a snack or a light meal.

In addition to the bites, singer Dóra Danics enhanced the mood. The highlight of the evening was to build the three meters in height the Famous Grouse.

The Famous Grouse went from strength to strength with assistance done by, Dóra Szinetár, Hien, Zsolt Erdei, Tamás Vastag, Tibor Kocsis and finally the Famous Grouse came alive and proudly stood and watched the partied stars enjoying every minute of their time.

… Hopefully, not on my own  cannot  be said enough about … After a hard working week … relax hard!

It seemed like more-or-less everyone kept that in mind.

A SYMBOLIC IMAGINARY CITY CALLED … “BurEUcratia” – BUDAPEST – 2014

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

District, V., 13. Erzsébet tér (Elisabeth Square) – Budapest

Exhibition open from Thursday to Saturday .

Free of charge.

  5 p.m.-7 p.m. – Thursday, November, 6.

10 a.m. – 7 p.m. –  Friday, November, 7.

10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday, November, 8.

Was opened to-day at the Erzsébet Square (Elisabeth)  in Budapest by British Ambassador Jonathan Knott and State Secretary for Economic Regulation, Béla Glattfelder from the Ministry for National Economy. The installation aims to raise awareness of the need to cut EU red tape that hinders business growth and competitiveness in all EU member states, particularly hitting hard on small and medium size enterprises.

“Millions of Euros worth of GDP is lost every year and thousands of new firms and jobs never get created inEurope due to problematic or poorly understood EU regulations. Companies often have to waste efforts they could otherwise spend on innovation and investment to struggle with complex regulatory burdens. We welcome the new Commission’s focus on better regulation and the creation of the Vice President’s role to this effect. We now must ensure that the commitments are enforced so that businesses can focus on the real work of selling more products, growing their businesses and employing more people,” said British Ambassador Jonathan Knott in his speech opening the labyrinth.

In Britain, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) represent 99.9 per cent of the private sector economy, employing an estimated 14.4 million people, 59.3 per cent of private sector employment. According to government data, Hungary’s economic structure is similar, with 99.8 per cent of all private companies belonging to the category of SMEs employing less than 250 staff. Two thirds of Hungary’s bilateral trade is done with other EU member states according to data by the Central Statistics Office. The symbolic maze depicts the damaging effects of EU over-regulation to SMEs and shows that reform is possible when stakeholders work together. The labyrinth opens on the first anniversary of the Business Taskforce report – “Cut EU red tape” – which was compiled by six British business leaders upon the request of British Ambassador to Hungary Jonathan Knott, State Secretary for Economic Regulation Béla Glattfelder – Ministry for National Economy, EU Red Tape,

The labyrinth opens on the first anniversary of the Business Taskforce report – “Cut EU red tape” – which was compiled by six British business leaders upon the request of UK Prime Minister David Cameron. The Taskforce’s One year on report about the achievements made over the last twelve months is also published today. A key finding of the October 2013 Business Taskforce report was that EU red tape causes the mostdamage to the smallest businesses that have less resource to deal with it, and are therefore affected disproportionally. In his speech opening the maze today, Ambassador Knott noted the progress that has been made in delivering the Business Taskforce recommendations for reform, with a third having already been achieved through the annulment or amendment of certain EU rules, and welcomed progress made on a number of other recommendations. He added that recently, the European Commission’s High Level Working Group on Administrative Burdens has also published favourable recommendations in order to eliminate EU over-regulation. These recommendations endorsed all of the ‘COMPETE’ principles; principles also proposed by the Business Taskforce to ensure new EU proposals promote innovation and growth. This is just part of the growing support for reform across Europe. There is however lots more work to do.“We welcome the efforts of the European Commission towards smarter regulation, but we also believe that improving BurEUcratia is still a long way to go. Therefore, the United Kingdom calls on the European Commission and all EU member states to continue taking concrete steps by adopting a pro-growth approach to EU regulation”, said British Ambassador Jonathan Knott. The Hungarian government was represented at today’s event by Mr Béla Glattfelder, State Secretary for Economic Regulation of the Ministry for National Economy. In his opening address Mr Glattfelder said: “With our economy largely dependent on SMEs and bilateral trade with other EU member states, Hungary supports the endeavours of the UK and the European Commission in cutting EU red tape and facilitating the smooth and successful participation of European SMEs, including the ones in Hungary, in the single market.” The „BurEUcratia” exhibition will be open to the public for three days in order to raise awareness of six of the EU rules identified by the Business Taskforce as the most problematic areas of excessive regulation affecting European SMEs. Through simple explanations and visual illustrations, visitors entering the maze can learn in an informal and engaging way about the effects of selected EU rules and how they can confuse businesses or cause them unnecessary problems. The topics tackled are: prescriptive requirements on data protection, inflexible and unclear rules on working time, costly official controls on food and animals, unnecessary rules on SMEs transporting a small amount of waste, the lack of a fully functioning digital single market in the EU and uncompetitive crop protection rules.

Background note concerning … The Business Taskforce report – Cut EU red tape was published in October 2013 and set out practical ways to reform EU rules, regulations and practices to make European businesses more competitive. It was written by six leaders from the UK business community, commissioned by Prime Minister David Cameron, and was based on information from some 90 UK contributors and another 20 from various European countries. Their report highlights the fact that European companies, which compete with the best in the world, will not succeed if they are subject to additional costs and burdens that their competitors in other developed markets do not face. The report put forward 30 recommendations to reform the most burdensome EU rules. The Taskforce also proposed the COMPETE principles – to act as common sense filter – to ensure new EU proposals do not put European firms at a competitive disadvantage in the race for international business.

No new EU legislation should be brought forward which does not successfully pass through this filter: Competitiveness test, One-in, One-out, Measure impacts, Proportionate rules, Exemptions and lighter regimes (for micro-businesses), Target for burden reduction, Evaluate and Enforce

  • In the digital economy alone, estimates suggest that reforms could add 4% to Europe’s GDP
  • Removal of all outstanding EU barriers to trade in services could lead to an additional gain to the EU economy of 1.8% of EU GDP
  • A successful transatlantic trade deal could, in the long-term, boost the EU economy by some €120 billion annually
  • Removing the requirement to write down health and safety risk assessments could save businesses across the EU some €2.7 billion
