ROLLING OVER TO INDIA, EVEN IF JUST SITTING AND WATCHING THE MAGIC OF INDIA FROM THE SEATS AT THE  ATRIUM FILM AND THEATER.

FIRST NIGHT IN INDIA!

March, 6 – 10. 2013.   – District II.   55. Margit Blvd. Budapest.

The India Festival is organized by the Embassy of India in Budapest. During the five days festival will be screening 7 Hindi films, offering dance performance, lectures on Indian films and culture, tourism programs, puppet show, children workshops and an exhibition which can be viewed on the program days.

6.15 p.m. – Wednesday, March, 6.

The Atrium was full with the invited  honor guests and local audience eager to see the Kathak dance performance by Ms. Sharmila Sharma, they say she is a precious stone of carrying the India culture, but I would rather say she is a shinning pearl of cherishing the art of traditional dances from India! At the age of 3 she already decided she wish to be a dancer. To-day she lives in France. Been around the world with the performances we were about to see: in the States, Switzerland, Great Britain  of course in France and now she lay her footsteps to Budapest bringing this opening evening of the India Festival, with three performances on stage at the Atrium Theater in Budapest.  The audience deeply expressed their appreciation for her awesome show. In the show the presence of the strong symbiosis of the Hindu and Muslim cultures were present as bringing alive the North Indian Kathak  dynamic style of dance.  Being at this evening’s show, can only say Ms. Sharmila Sharma is definitely one of the best Kathak dancers to have open such a grand festival. The audience, even for only less than an hour could have felt they have went back in time and dropped over to Northern India. At the end of the superb performance the Ambassador of India to Hungary his Excellency Gauri Shankar Gupta went up to the stage to express his sincere thanks for the  giving all of us a lovely evening.

Briefly about the Kathak classical dance:
“It comes from the North of India. The word Kathak is derived from katha meaning “storytelling”. The expression “Katha kahe so” Kathak means whoever tells a story in a dance form with song is a Kathak. The movements of hands (mudra) and body along with facial expressions (abhinaya) were used to tell a story with song and music and this gave birth to Kathak and Kathakars. Originally, the artists known as the Kathakars told mythological stories (harikatha) in the Hindu temples of Northern India and obviously their art was deeply rooted in the Hindu religion, philosophy and spirituality. The Kathakars knowledge – compositions and choreography – were passed on from generation to generation through oral tradition. Between the l2th and the l8th century, Kathak was practised in the magnificent palaces of the Mughal emperors and even earlier in those of Hindu rulers. After being a totally devotional temple art, it had also become a court dance, intended to entertain those powerful rulers. It enriched itself by borrowing from Persian cultural elements and as such, the aesthetics of the dance evolved in accordance with the aesthetics of the Muslim culture too.
The current form of Kathak is linked to the Mughal era. During that period the facial expressions and gestures gained in subtlety. The artist was indeed able to express a theme in many different ways with a wide range of nuances. The aspect of pure dance (nritta) gained in sophistication and speed. The rhythm, movements and pirouettes became more complex. Kathak also became permeated with elegant Urdu poetry along with the poems in Braj. (One of the last Mughal emperors, Wajid Ali Shah himself composed songs on Krishna in Braj.

With this breathtaking performance by  Ms. Sharmila Sharma, the evening did not end. At 7.30 p.m.  Ek Main Aur Tu from 2012, a musical  romantic comedy was screening. Staring: Imran Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, Ratna Pathak Shah. Director: Shakun Batra.  Quick Specs from the film: A few drinks too many leads an uptight architect and quick-witted hairstylist to marry in Las Vegas. Can a mistake lead to friendship and love? Imran, an introvert architect, and Kareena, a carefree hair stylist, meet in Las Vegas and get married after getting drunk. The next day, they realise their mistake and start the process of annulling their marriage.

On the spot an exhibition was opened to-day titled: Life with Love. Photos are of Esther Horváth … Radiant, charming, touching… An exhibition for your heart! The exhibition will be out throughout the period of the festival.

Day2, 3, 4, 5 … to be continued …

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

THE FIRST TIME IN THE WORLD EVER –  AFTER 400 YEARS HERE IN BUDAPEST THE VISITORS TO GO TO THE GASTROPIAC  – GASTRO MARKET FAIR WILL BE AMAZED OF THE HEAVENLY TASTE OF THE  AUROCHS STEW AND THE SAUSAGE … THE AUROCHS ARE THE ANCESTOR OF THE ALL THE CATTLEOF TO-DAY!

Just adding a note here to the unbelievable  … The auroch cattle extinct  400 years ago, but scientists by, “revitalized ”  known as the  “Heck” cattle aurochs  is the ancestor of all cattle of to-day.

During the late morning hours the organizers of the forthcoming Craft of Hungarian Flavors Fair of 2013 invited the press representatives to learn and spread the news about the new concept of the Hungarian national cuisine on the occasion of the Fair’s 5th anniversary. New themes are upon their way and a new title of the event was given, „Gastropiac – Gastro Market ” – Craft Hungarian Flavours Fair.

At the opening, before heading to spread the news to the forthcoming 5th Fair of „Gastropiac – Gastro Market ” – Craft Hungarian Flavors, MrCsaba Poór,  Chairman at the CME Board greeted the high number of the presence of press representatives.  Mr. Krisztán Pap, CEO Flavors of Hungary Trade Association Ltd.  was delighted to inform us of yesterday’s, March, 2. first Ball connected to the Hungarian influence at the Castle of Gödöllő. The Flavors of Hungary Trade Association Ltd. (MIKSZ) hosted the Hungarian influence consumers, producers, traders, media players and agencies, Heads of administrations. The scene was at the castle’s Grassalkovich Riding Hall which was the venue of the Hungarian EU Presidency and also where the EU leaders summit took place. As he said wished to share this information and the pleasure the organizers experienced before heading to to-day’s press release. Also attended at the press call, Mr. Sándor Csiki, biologist – gastro specialist told us that this year there will be  stew, sausages prfepaired from the meat of “aurochs”  and Mr. Gábor Rácz, rep. Almárium Hungarorum Bistro.  Wayback there was the sausage filling press gathering (see update) where I was amazied by the site of the cupboard filled with the Hungarian folks treasured foodstuffs from the times of Noah’s Ark … o.k. niot that long ago, yet very s specific ingredients which are hardly in use at the to-day’s kitchen. On this occasion was announced,  freshening up with the new theme, new name, “The Craft Hungarian Flavours Fair – Gastro Market” will colorful the display at the gastronomic event. As we were told, five years ago they had to work extremely hard to catch the eye of the press to advertise the fair of home-made food, and now-a-days more-and-more visitors who have visited the previous events follow the news to learn when will be the next event.

So, relying on the info of to-day, „liquid bread” and „liquid food” and all you can image will be on the spot during March, 8. – March, 10. 2013. at the usual place, “B” Hall at the Millennium. District II. 16-20 Kis Rókus Str. Budapest. Just like the year before the tables will be fully swelling of gastro delights like sausage, ham, cheese, soups, vegetables, Hungarian stews, pasta, fish, salads, sandwiches, wines from the field of Hungary, sweets-for the-sweets will be  on tables prepared, served, to be brought on the spot from the domestic gastro producers.

What to expect at the „Gastropiac – Gastro Market” … nearly 120 Hungarian producers, with 5000 different goods, ingredients and delicacies to pumped up the visitors taste, purchasing, having their own home-cooked Hungarian dishes here in Hungary or even over the other side of the Ocean.  Fifteenth „Gastro Points” will be awaiting the visitors to get their ingredients for delicacies in already prepared in the form of food

The Gastronomic specialties will not be missing. They will be out at the Points. Worth highlighting the Bükk gratin veggies covered by cheese sauce and celery, also apple salad with smoked quail eggs, or cheese dumplings from the mini farm garnished withthe delicious Hungarian chicken stew. Espeicially for the foreigner visitors,  the finest quality of the Hungarian wines and pálinka will be offered  to taste and purchase a bottle or two to comfy them back at their home.

Cannot walk by the twisting sence of the fried Hungarian grey beef, duck, goose, mangalica  and at the “Pomáz” manufactured traditional pork sausages with several dressing to be tasted like the side of the country apple sausage with mustard , onion jam, as well with prunbe.

A little background to the previous year: the organizers as a family bond created the Craft Hungarian Flavours fair to popularize the Hungarian producers, taste, and to support the Hungarian economy. Every year approximately 550 billion Hungarian Forint is spent on raw food, which is only a fraction of Hungarian products. Way back five years ago the organizers had high hopes to have the money remained in the domestic economy and to support the Hungarian producers to promote more products and bring them to the fair. During the last four years  around 150 exhibitors arrived to show their products for around sixty thousand visitors.  The country-side home-made bread will surely give a crush on those who will taste them. So far, around 60000 guests where purchasing themselves their products.

The daily ticket price is 1500/HUF. This amount can be in use by the visitors at the brand shop of Craft Hungarian Flavours when shopping for the amount over 5000HUF until May, 13. 3013. Address: District III.4/B. Szölőkert Rd. Budapest.

Kids arriving with their family members under the age of 12 can visit the fair free of charge.

At the end of the press call, all were invited to taste the Hungarian aurochs stew served with “nokedli” special Hungarian noddles sprinkled with cottage cheese and other delicous yummies and the grand assortment of wines and pálinka, refreshments were to fill our bellies.

CITY OF MISKOLC 13TH WINTER ASPIC MEAT FESTIVAL – WEEK-END DURING FEBRUARY 22-24. 2013.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The season to celebrate the „Aspic Meat Festival” has arrived to the City of Miskolc! It became a prominent event in the North region of Hungary a real  tradition and also a good time to visit Miskolc. The whole festival surrounding was as dream, being in the hustle and bustle at a huge fairground, even though the stormy northern winds and snowfalls woke me up from that dream. Afterall the atmosphere was spiced up with attractions, good foods and  warm welcome which warmed up our body and soul.

Source from the organisers … „Every year in the third week of February Miskolc Winter the biggest open air festival of winter in Hungary invites visitors. The festival was founded upon a story about Miskolc starring the frog and the meat jelly. This unique event is based either on modern entertainment and traditions and values. In the wide range of programmes elements of culture, gastronomy, sport, health, environmental protection, and active adventure tourism are gathered together. There is a proverb about the famous case that happened here in Miskolc: „Blinks like the frog in the meat jelly of Miskolc” …  Each year more-and-more people visit the festival, in 2007 during the festival more than 100 thousand people visited the events, in 2008 over 200 thousand visitors were registered.”

Here it is in nutshell about the tale … Once upon a time, a frog jumped into a bowl of   “KOCSONYA”  – aspic meat while cooling in a cellar at a restaurant in Miskolc and the waitress served it to guests without a glance into the bowl. Actually, haven’t a clue whether the guest really ate the soup or not, but since then, the expression saying: “Blinks, like the frog in the Miskolc  aspic meat”  this have had become a common usage in Hungary. So at Miskolc now was the time and place to go and enjoy this treat … hopefully without the frog! The Kocsonya is prepared in the late fall  as the weather becomes a bit chilly and winter when the boiling soup is placed in a cold place of the house or in the cellar. Then slowly the hot soup becomes a meat aspic. Some cook it with pork meat adding veggies and spices, some with the use of turkey meat, or fish, or simply with only veggies and in this case need a lot of garlic which helps the soup to become I would say ’sleepy”, but officially they say it jelly frost.

Even though the weather was dreadful, with  heavy snowing, as seen  in the slide show, many visitors came around the streets and squares are where music filled each corner  with showmen entertaining the guests.

More than a hundred programs, concerts and performances are waiting for the small and big ones who can taste the famous meat jelly of Miskolc, the laczi-steak (Hungarian  spicy steak, the pretzel and each year the popular beer rolls down the throats for many having a „Korty” meaning „Síp” of  the well-known beer speciality of Miskolc. Having frogs as the main character of the event “T.G.” there were no live frogs falling from the sky, neither in the bowls this time, nor bouncing around the merry folks!

Over the 3 days biggest Hungarian, national, open-air, multicultural winter event, this year from Slovakia, Kosice – ECOC – 2013. was the honored guest at the festival. The major of Kosice with his delegation were welcomed by the local prominent persons of Miskolc and also had a major stand whereas „Visit Kosice” programs  “spiced up” by the Kosice artists gave a superb performance. The honored guest was shown around the city and taken tasting of a wide range of meat aspic.

Not just the wine from the vineyards of Monok, but bean soup with smoked meat, flavored in the regions style was welcomed for tastings and surely folks couldn’t  say it enough times how much they enjoyed the ala-Monok  spicy bean soup that they will never forget. Well it was  seen that the locals,  folks from other regions of Hungary and foreigners strolling along through paths couldn’t resist from the calling sent to stop by and have a tasting bowl  ala-Monok spicy bean soup. Found out on the spot, that  … Saturday, July, 6. at Monok will hold its first BeanSoup Festival.

The  mouth-watering  sweet  blackberry, sweet raspberry, sweet cherry and  the sour-sweet wines were presented  by  “art of making fruit wines”  Mr. Csaba Sápi and his kind wife Ili. His hands were all the time full with sips filled glasses calling the folks walking by to come over and have a taste  of 100%  real fruit wines. Ili, his wife was baking small donuts filled with her own home-made appricot jam, it was heavenly good and made you forget the pelting  snowland you were walking along that’s for sure.

A stop at  tasting  “Hajni’s”cherry pies and cakes filled with the cherry from the famous „Cherry fields” from Szomolya  was such a special treat.  Also  was present when thumbs-up  by the VIP delegation from Kosice was welcomed to to stand an invited for the tasting of their famous cherry pie.  The Szomolya  area is also known as Hungary’s one and only “Cherryville!”. By-the-way Szomolya enjoys world fame with her early ripening, honey-sweet, half-black cherries. You may also have the experience to taste this rich in flavor cherry by visiting Szomolya  by car, by intercity bus,  as jackbooted tourist, as horseback rider or by  bicycle  to  Szomolya between June, 7-9.  to be at the XIIth Cherry Festival.

So, heading back to the scene at the Aspic Meat Festival, many fine local dishes and gastronomic specialties were to welcome the visitors which surely swept them into the grove of having that festival feeling. As for the share of the culture life, the Kosice delegation visited the local museum, whereas many Slovakian born famous men have added, shared their rich culture and art with the city of Miskolc. The famous Miskolc „Steelers” American Football team and cheerleaders gave a spectacular show on the main stage. The visitors also had a chance to meet with the Miskolc’s Polar bears hockey team. The little ones were not left out of enjoyments, many kids programs were out on the scene as well. Musicworld was presented by regions bands and from Kosice serving all kinda taste, as folk music,  dance music, alternative rock, Latin salsa and samba, Jazz.

Last but not least a growing number of foreign and Hungarian tourists left their footsteps at the Jelly Meat Festival in Miskolc and might be they will go back to the place again next year where once they had a terrific time.

In-and-around  the Festival of the Jelly Meat  at Miskolc, in between February 22-24, the Miskolc National Theater‘s on  Saturday, February 23. during the season in the series of drama programs, three well-known figures of gentry living with us, previously playing in the “Csörgheő Csuli – knuckle” by outstanding well-known actors as Mr. György Cserhalmi, Mr. András Stohl and Mr.Tibor Gáspár came along to show their own tricks and knowlege by the way of cooking the famous Hungarian Grey Beef Stew! Each of them brought their own style by cooking with the flavors from their birth region and the family use of spices. More to the gathering they talked about their role in the character, playing “Csörgheő Csuli Knuckle”, script written by Zsigmond Móricz. As the stew was on open fire the ongoing tasting went on-and-on. Also by tasting the other’s boiling stews, picking on eachother with jokes whileand  having some pálinka in the deepth of the  snowy cold weather to be hot just as the stew on fire. Theysurely caught the mood and enjoyed their role in cooking as well. Mr. Tibor Gáspár told us, this is his first time cooking the Hungarian grey beef soup…haa. Mr. Sohl said his father cooked the best beef stew in the world so he wish to cooking it  ala father’s sytle. Mr. Cserhalmi told us, his convincted this stew will win the first prize :-). We awaited for the surprise at the end. Must admit all the stews were heavenly yummy, soft and tender was the meat, perfectly cooked.

The stews were still of fire when  the talk-show went on in the theater’s main stage. The “Csuli Chief’s” assistants took over the woodenspoon, looked after the composition.  The show started with a huge birthday cake rolling onto the stage .. .it was Mr. András Stohl’s birthday and recently Mr. György Cserhalmi’s as well. Funny when it comes to talking about the exact year of a person’s birthday, so the moderator only added the three of the actors age in years as  total of 111years. The talk-show was moderated by Mr. Artúr Szőcs.

At the end of the talk-show, the audience were called to have a taste of the three “cookers”  beef stew and decide which one was the best in flavors and taste. Yet, before the tasting was open,  on stage came 5 genuine gypsy violin players to enroll in the competition. The “Csuli’s” at the end decided whose primate play was the best. In the competition all gypsy players were from the region of Borsod.  The four out of the five competitors are already famous, well-known gypsy violin players around the world. There was also a member in competition who plays at the 100 member gypsy orchestra, but this evening the three Csuli members  called out as one for the winner to the  talented young violinist.

What a day-and-night … most sure many locals enjoyed their stay and  those people how arrived just for this special day will remember of the fun they had. Heard there will quite a number of visitors from Budapest, just to see these fab. actors “in motion”!

Congrats goes out to the Miskolc National Theater to have in mind as to organized such a  superb day … cooking at the theater’s courtyard  and  holding a n awesome evening on the stage  with the three grand characters of   “Csuli”.  And theevening’s cream on top of the cake was absolutely highlighted  with the grand gypsy violin players.

VERDI’S NABUCCO ON STAGE AT THE CITY OF MISKOLC NATIONAL THEATER

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Needn’t have to say … Verdi’s Nabucco is one of the world’s magnificant opera  and it arrived  to  the Miskolc National Theater!

Verdi’s grand opera, the Nabucco came alive on Friday, February, 22. 2013.  was on stage at the relatively small city of Miskolc’s National Theater compared to the capital Budapest’s National Theater, but even though of the sizes, the theater and the size of the city itself, the opera play was the-night-of-the night’s with a spectacular performance.  The house was absolutely full. The designing of the chorus stage of placement was an impressive catch by the director by using every inch-by-inch the placing of the chorus beside the rows of the audience. So even though the stage was rather small for a gigantic scene, the choreography and the director’s  arrangements were outstanding! Let alone of the high season of colds and flu, the singer vocal performances was acceptable and  good in acting.

Throughout the decades Nabucco stands far with his superior piece of Verdi, who was only 27 years old when he composed this great piece of art. Nabucco opera opened theaters not just in Italy and many parts of the world. The local opera lovers and even from Budapest, groups were interested to see the performance at the Miskolc National Theater. Many may know, but for those „few” who are just going to get acquainted with the opera act here is a brief background:

It holds a biblical story, taking place in 578BC. Babylonian King Nabucco occupied Jerusalem, stroyed the city and the Temple of Solomon, the Jewish people in captivity. Nabucco’s has two daughters: Abigail and Fenena. Fenena falls in love with a Jewish boy Izmaellel who saved his life. Abigel turns out, not a descendant of Nabucco, it is not entitled to inherit the throne. Abigail still decides to take over. Fate favors him because Nabucco declares himself God, when a lightning struck him down, and from his mind confused. Abigail possession of power wants the Jews to death, and they Fenenát, who was on their side. The judgment of the confusion made the minded king stringer as well. Nabucco is a lucid moment and then realizes what he’s done. Desperation of the Jews pray to God who heals and returns the old level. In time can prevent Fenena sacrificed on the altar of Baal. Abigail poisoned himself. The King of the Jews returned to freedom, return home countries.

Preformers: Ms. Szilvia Rálik, as Abigail, Ms. Anett Baranyai, as Anna, Ms. Gabriella Busa, as Fenena, Mr. István Horváth, as Ishmael, Mr. Titusz Tóbisz, as Abdalla, Viktor Massányi, as Nabucco, Mr. István Rácz, as Zechariah, Mr.Károly Kincses, as High Priest of Baal.

Music was awesome by the participation of the Miskolc National Theater Orchestra, choir, the dance faculty and chorus of the Csokonai Theater, Bertalan Szemere Secondary School, High School students of Győző Balázs Reformed.  Child Actors: Anna Kőhegyi, Frida Fandl, Johan Lichy.

Mr. György Kesselyák, Liszt-awarded musical director, Mr. Attila Kozma, Choregrapher, Ms. Maria Tóth and Timea Bundzik, tutors, Ms. Erika Radnai, assistant director, Ms. Krisztina Reiter, the help, Ms. Edit Zeke, set design,  Mr. Jankó Papp, Costume designer.

THIS  WAS AN AMAZING  – NIGHT AT THE OPERA  –  WITH AN OVERALL  OF 100 PERFORMERS!

All things must come to an end and here the stage was so colorful, full of the performers as they were called back on stage by the audience clapping, cheering loud for more than a half-a-dozen times.

The photos are from the source of the Miskolc National Theater.
