ANOTHER DAY AT THE FIRST FISH FESTIVAL – BUDAPEST 2013.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Just this Sunday at the Akvárium Pool and the 1st Fish Festival will be coming to the end. Hope many visitors enjoy their walk-around at great floating  fish soups in the air.

Besides the traditional Hungarian dishes of fish, the most well-known Asian cuisine dishes were also available on the spot. As said at the press call, three invited countries will be cooking, representing their traditional culinary delights, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan. unfortunately, too much fish was around to try to find my way to see and visit ‘Nam’s and Japan’s culinary specialties. I think these two countries should have been given more space and advertising attention, or at least a map of stands, showing where is what. Very narrow was the passing walking area, that made the visitors hard to „swim” through the crowd.

“The festival is aimed at encouraging the domestic consumption of fish and to strengthen the fish culture here Hungarian within the gastronomy of specially cooked Hungarian soups and dishes ” …  told by Mr. József Németh,  “Venesz” awarded  president at the Hungarian National Gasdtronomic Association.

The consumption of fish for centuries was/is an integral part of the Hungarian cuisine. However and ever though the territory of Hungary has many fast running rivers (great meat of energetic running fish), lakes (more fatty meat of lazy fish) and fish at breeding establishments (One of Hungary’s Fish Farm is at Hortobágy area, where there are fish ponds operating. The carp capacity is between 200 million and 50 million, herbivorous and carnivorous fish rearing.

At the Hortobágy area and the Tisza region for thousands of years was self-sufficient in fish. Upon recorded information it is said … at the dawn of the new age at the unregulated rivers there were “more fish than water.”

My way: „The Hungarian fish soup needs no chief’s headgear in preparing a unique full of harmonies, delightful fish soup. Basically, all you need is a variety of carp, catfish, pike, bream, onion, salt and pepper, then add bay leaf, tomato, fresh green paprika to specie up your day…. and there you go.”

Unfortunately, when you have plenty it is not always fully appreciated. The Hungarians annual fish consumption of an average of 4 kilograms/year/person.Throughout Europe Hungary has the most field of water sources the figures show we eat fish among the lowest in Europe. Even though knowing the beneficial effects of fish, known to be rich consumption effects: the heart and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

One of the highlights of the festival was that distinguished fish folks inn’s represented themselves by cooking on open air their style of fish soups These people were from several corners of Hungary’s famous  „csarda” Folks Inns. Mentioning a couple which had their own stand called: „Soupi” at the festival.  The unique Russian Fish soup called: „UHA”  which exist since the times of the Tsarist domination. What is special about this fish soup … no red paprika powder, as I mentioned to him „it looks like a pale-faced Indian” … this is how we Hungarians call those who have no tan of their face, they put many kinds of fish: salmon, catfish and other fish with carrots and  potatoes and the „cream on top”  they add 40% of „Lya Vodka” or whatever is at home on the shelves. As was told, this is an everyday fish soup in Russia. The next caldron to be visited was already boiling the fish soup Alá-Mohács by Lajos Havas and Péter Szikra, the team of two arrived from Mohács. They also brought the traditional „Mohács Black Ceramic – as to serve their fish soups – made by the famous local László Lakatos pottery maker. There speciality was cooking their soup with the strong aroma „CRNI LUK” onion powder bought from Serbia. As Péter Szikra added, without the use of the powder they would be falling into tears while peeling a half-a-dozen of palm-sized onions. Now it is not available in Hungary, but the talks are going on between the parties to have it available in the stores in Hungary. Péter Szikra has a „Fish Island” at Mohács, where there is an Inn, fishing opportunities and fish cooking combined with the possibility of arranging events. Pál Nagy was also there but this time as a visitor. He is from the area of Baja, well-known by all Hungarians they have  their own specially cooked fish soup with their special noodles which are called the „matches” noddles. The also have annual fish soup festival at Baja, which is a  traditional for 300 years and ont he occasion of this anniversary there was 300 stands of fish soups from all the territories of Hungary. As he said their fish soup is prepared with pike, perch, catfish, sterlet and zander.

Now to the fish soup the wines were not missing. The Fekete Wine Cellar brought their products from Agárd, at Lake Velence.  Rolling around the stand, man there were  many Pálinka to rinsen the throats. Passing by the stands, was  called to have  a shot and taste the Madarasi Pálinka House’s  clear fruit pálinkas.  I thought I would go for the blueberry, was as having a bunch of fresh fruit,  could not stop in smelling it, cause the aroma was just amazing. The pálinka house stand in the town called Madaras and is owned by Mr. Márton Lakatos.  The  family owned company was one of the first’s „hire distiller” joining to the Pálinka Order of Knighthood in 2004. Was also told: ” For example getting 2 liters of elderberry pálinka you need 100 kilograms of elderberries to gain 60-70% of pálinka.”

The Fruit Wine from the Sápi Family company, located at Csömör was all day long surrounded by visitors at their stand. Csaba Sápi was like a PA calling the visitors for free tasting. While I was there a couple of bottles of fruit wines were brought and on their way home, taken to brighten up the rainy days. “Unfortunately, the fruit wines do not have such a great prestige among the Hungarian wine makers, most of them think wine can be made from only grapes, which is not true” said Csaba Sápi, winemaker. Also added: “We realized that the fruit wines should be treated as a good mother to hear  what the child says. I always listen to them, care for them.”  Csaba’s  wife, Ili on the stand told me: „We have now strawberry, raspberry, blueberry and blue elderberry wines made purely from the fruits , also produce red and black currant and  our latest product is preparing figs wine. The brand name stands of the daughter, Timea. By all means forms further motivations for us to create a quality product. “My daughter’s face marks the products, so I create a wine that matures in my child’s name and face. Last year our brand, the fruit wine was presented at the Real Wine Fair in London. As the  wine makers  stopped by and tasted them it become popular among the locals.  Foreigner wine makers  we also interested in our wines. The China’s sales representative also bought selection of dozen bottles of our fruit wine. Hopefully at this year’s  Real Wine Fair in London we will be again represented with our  fruit wines.” Ili, also was so kind to bring her home-made previously prepared special pasta for Hungarian donuts. We usually eat them with home-made jams. As can be seen, topped with apricot jam as the home-made jams are common  here, cut in 2 pieces so the fruit looks not only wonderful but tastes good. The snap can be seen in the slide show.

Last but not at all visiting the stands, must say a word or two about the „Pisztrángos” stand, where a wagon length of crowd was awaiting to get the taste of the famous trout to eat by „Feri Pisztrángos” from Dunabogdány.  Many said on the spot they have heard about the delightful fish dishes served at his restaurant at Dunabogdány that is why they will not leave the stand before not tasting these „good looking” trouts. Well, I was already on my way, just dropped by to Mr. Pisztrángos taken some snaps. Asked me whether I have been at their restaurant and tastes their special trouts already. Hearing I have not, was invited to visit his restaurant and based on my experience to evaluate what kind the royal trout got the hook on me.

District 5. Erzsébet Square –  Budapest

A Great Family, Friends gathering for  not only Fish Food Lovers, but the better you are!

It is going to be a friendly atmosphere, meeting, outdoor cooking in the heart of the city where everyone is welcome.

The thought of bringing a festival of fish has been never before in Hungary, even though Hungary has 3 lakes, main rivers, the River Danube which rolls through the country dividing the country map into two parts, the River Tisza. and many small rivers. So Hungary is rich in a land of waters. Now anyone can image how many fish are swimming and awaited to be on the hook.  There is no age limit to join the festival. Young-and-old who are fish food lovers are invited to eat fish their heavenly tastes with the special Hungarians spices. Those who come around will not only have the experience to eat the ordinary Hungarian style way of prepared fish, also  will be able to taste fish  the way it is prepared in different regions of Hungary. Beside eating these melting tastes the organizers are come along with culinary arts, cultural programs and social events to highlight the coming 3 days. The organizers goal was to bring this fish festival  to encourage people to eat more-and-more fish food and promote the culture of fish consumption in Hungary.

Besides of the fact that fish has beneficial effects on human health , it also forms part of our gastronomy and is essential part of our holiday feasts.

However, fish consumption in Hungary is far below the European average; therefore the aim of the event is to popularise fish dishes to all the visitors at the festival. Another key objective is to raise awareness of the locals to our domestic surface waters with a special attention to the cleanness of River Danube.  The River Danube was ranked among the 10 most endangered rivers in the world.  Due to numerous initiatives which have been taken, quality of its water has improved, yet further efforts are still needed.

Our Fish Festival seeks to raise awareness of the values of our natural resources.  Profile of the festival The Budapest Fish Festival is planned to be an interactive event, where both the adults and the smallest can enjoy the programmes and the culinary delights. During the course of the first fish festival of the capital, visitors can not only taste the fish specialties but can take part in the cooking and preparation as well.

I festival could not be a festival without not inviting a guest country to also show their specialities. The organisers consider uniqueness extremely important. Therefore. Budapest Fish Festival, overstepping the usual Hungarian fish-soup festivals, will bring maybe not really well-known, new, international flavours to introduce to the visiting guests. Besides the traditional Hungarian dishes, the flavours of Asia will be presented, also traditional recipes from Thailand, Vietnam and Japan.

I bet many are already been ingested a big one Ain’t have to wait for the delights too long, just 2days and here comes the 1st Fish Festival, 2013. Budapest.

The rather cold weather is still here, but the warm atmosphere will be brought by Ms.Veronika Catfish (yes heard it well … Catfish) Could a Fish Festival be more appropriate to have one of Hungary’s talented singers named Catfish on the stage!  She will give a concert on Friday, February,15 at 6 p.m. The concert is free of charge just as to the 3 days festival programs!

There will be a talent contest during three days of the Fish Festival.

Anyone who feels the talent in declamation, dance, music or even stand up comedy genre of entertainment which theme is inspired by the fish, may have a chance to perform at the Budapest Festival stage. Applications are awaiting to be forward with a short introduction to the e/mail address: info@budapestihalfesztival.hu

It’s a friendly atmosphere, meeting, outdoor cooking in the heart of the city where everyone is welcome.

The event will be mostly about fish, but the pálinka, wine, fresh loaf of bread and a good atmosphere will not be missing. If you are believer that’s the place to be.

Sunday was the day, February,10. the Asia-Pacific and Hungarian artists, acrobats, musicians, athletes, games, prizes, sport activities awaited the visitors who joined together to welcome the Chinese Year of the Snake in other words: the Lunar New Year Festival.

At the Millennium Park Hungarians  and the Chinese … staying, living in Hungary came  together to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year by a full day of outstanding events and evening show

“To celebrate here in Hungary the Lunar New Year ain’t a secret … our aim to create a tradition. In addition to the entertainment  for the audience, we would like to draw the attention to the cultural diversity and the better understanding of the Hungarian Society of migrant communities” These were the opening words said by Mr. Marcell Lőrincz, President of the Foundation of Subjective Values.

Here are some of the stands that were visited: The Corvinus University and the University of Szeged and the ELTE Confucius Institutions represented themselves with calligraphy education, spreading the Chinese culture and language teaching on educational levels. Competitions and lucky Chinese knots bonds were highly appreciated by the visitor. Those interested to which Chinese animal was standing in the year of their birth, received information and also a card telling them what is typical in them related to their year of birth.

Throughout the day, several times the lion dance was preformed inside area of the Millennium. Was a stand to introduce the Chinese tea culture, also tasting and shopping the unique flavors of the Far East.

Breathtaking exhibition was out on display with  photographs taken in the beautiful land of China. Also interactive cultural activities, Kung Fu competition to win the Cup of Champions took place. Ping-pong tables were available for young and old to get into the mood and rhythm of the outstanding Chinese ping-pong style, playing with the Hungarian Ms. Rita Pócsai double-champion and ten-times go and table-tennis champion Mr. Csaba Magyar was such a thrill to young and elder folks. For the young ones origami courses were held. The master of calligraphy art Zhang Wei glimpse into the world  for telling kids some  Chinese children’s stories.

Must  say, the most popular and visited space was to get acquainted with/in some level of the traditional Chinese medicine. For many visitors it was the first time to hear and to try in practise with the support of the Chinese experts on the spot some tests and methods mapping their health conditions. Of course, there were many individuals who already have heard, known, been to these natural healing centers here in Budapest and for them it was like an advance training to hear more and precisely to gain information of the level of their health condition.

During the day Dr. Chen Zhen, professor of medicine and President of Central European Association TCM held several presentations for much to enjoy. Each-and-every gathering at his lecture room was full like herrings in the tin. Dr. Chen is an outstanding precentor, so well delivered his sophisticated knowledge in Hungarian language. His Powerpoint presentation was so clear like looking through the sparkling window. At the end of his presentation people from various trade got a hold of him and asked several questions, advises connected to implement in their daily professional work. Also Dr. Chen publications were  available and held  book signing after his presentations  Many who already had his Book of Natural had the pleasure to get it signed by him.

The festival came to the end  with  the show of 35 famous Guangxi Acrobatic Society. Most sure it was an unforgettable awesome show.

The Chinese legend says …”The more abundant the New Year’s feast is, the richer will be the New Year. Therefore, in grand preparation  takes place for the New Year, after cleaning the (pans) cooking’s must be continued.”… haaa … tell me about it.

To-day the Snake probably enjoyed his welcome and hopefully we will also enjoy his presence throughout the coming

Year of the Snake.

But before heading to the a/m announcement at the press call of this morning by the representatives of the W!ZZ AIR here is a brief overview about the W!ZZ AIR, even though many already know and have had experiences to fly with W!ZZ AIR … but could be (!?!) many have not yet flew, been on board the largest low-cost, low-fare airline in Central and Eastern Europe…

Strong and Consistent Growth … easy to follow the data’s.

In the year 2004 when W!ZZ Air first landed in Hungary, carried 0.7 million passengers throughout Europe. compared to the past 9 years, this figure has increased to 12 million passengers in the year 2012. The numbers speak for themselves and clearly can be seen the position W!ZZ AIR has achieved in growth. This coming year, 2013., the figures are expected to reach 13.8 million passengers.

The Airbus A320 aircrafts are maintained by their partners as Lufthansa Technik, whom share the Airline’s commitments as to the high standards of safely and quality. Can be well followed the W!ZZ AIR’s significant cost advantages.

WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Oh well …. before someone has a second thought … this is not a contemporary art!  It shows W!ZZ AIR  operations over 250 routes throughout 30 countries to 84 destinations with the number of 39, Airbus A320 aircrafts and  the number of 1500 employees.

Just to be in the picture, here are some data:  Fleet  of age and the O2 emission: W!ZZ: 3.2yrs. – 70g/RPK, RYR: 3.8yrs. – 77g/RPK, EZY: 4.2yrs. – 85g/RPF, AF-KLM: 9,5yrs.  –  93g/RPK, BA: 13yrs. – 103g/RPK, LH: 12.9yrs. – 105g/RPK.

Alright, not going to take anyone’s precious time away any longer by throwing the wet ball into the net. Here comes the herald news  as mentioned earlier being at this morning’s press  announcement.

W!zz Air’s new iPhone application to book flights will be available for all iPod and iPhone users starting from next week!

Iphone application

This morning  in time, the same announcement took  place at the countries following: Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Czech Republic Poland, Romania and Slovenia. Some questions many might already have in mind. Here is a couple of answers to the thoughts: Will it work on the tablets? We were told it ain’t yet been developed as a separate computerized application. They are keeping that in mind to have it later rolling along just as well as on the use of iPod and iPhone. The Android’s new app is already at the AppelStore, but said for the W!zz Air it will only be available in May, 2013., because at the moment it is under the development stage. W!zz Air  came out with its mobil application in use to  book for any flight, but unfortunately only W!zz Discount Club members can take the advantage of all the features. Mobile check-in cannot be in use, but it was said it will be available this coming March. There are no plans running on yet in charging the accounts at  the W!ZZ AIR. Those passengers already registered are able to sign in immediately and going through the “pages”  can book their tickets.  Once the reservation is carried out there will be no  possibility to modify it. As for the future it is expected to be able to register on the application, until then it can still be made on the website.  Caution… Only the members who pay the 8900HUF annual fee  for W!zz Discount Club membership can use it. The system does not memorize the credit card information for safety reasons, but as soon as  the function becomes available then notice will appear on the website. Unfortunately, at the moment still have to get your ticket using the „old way”, e-ticket printing method. The fact that by the use of the mobile phone  to check-in is still ahead, was told it will take two to three weeks. It requires further appropriate negotiations and going through in the development stage. Naturally, some places have to pay for that service, and as for the mobile boarding pass reading development and investment on the ground handling companies obviously will have to be paid by the airline. After the booking the reservation can do with acredit card or with the usen of the person’s account balance! The cards eccepted: MasterCard,Visa, Wizz Card Hungary, Wizz Card Romania, Wizz Card Poland. Simply tap the submit payment button after finalizing the booking procedure.

Easy to follow, because the app are available in Hungarian, English, German and Romanian languages .

BE SMART …  CHOOSE SMART … FLY SMART … WITH W!ZZ AIR BACK-AND-FORTH TO BUDAPEST- HUNGARY!

THE FIRST “SZEM” – “EYE” EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES THEATER IN MISKOLC WAS SLOWLY COMING TO THE END!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Continuing with Day3  updates at the SZEM  – EYE  Theater Miskolc of excellently organized and similar great performances!

In the following days a range of different theater shows, as drama, musical, dancing were shared with the audience to enjoy!

Thursday, February, 7. „JULIETTE MUST DIE” The  Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art  from  Poland  brought “Juliet must die”  performance to the SZEM – EYE Festival. Was a short play of 25minutes, modern act by very talented actors, an awesome deeply physical theater performance.   The performance was directed by Barbara Wisniewska, a student of  The Directing Department at Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Arts in Warsaw, Poland.

The play is happening in our-a-days. Juliette is modern 21st century’s gal, goes to disco and enjoys her life and she prefers not to die. Juliette, in this play she is not that Juliette you may have in mind of Shakespeare …  she wants to live!  Her family takes her as an  obedient daughter, a perfect wife-to-be, an ideal woman. Her problems start as being taken as beautiful doll, but living in a golden cage. She considers men constantly patronize her and forgets about her humanity, hinder her own free will. The story of the world’s most famous lovers here shows in perspective of Juliette, who absolutely is against to be a merely trophy for a man. The story goes on the out most archetypical history of the famous lovers in the literature world. Main thought all along the way is about unsolved gender problems. The problem shown from the perspective of the main character, who doesn’t want to be a supplement to man and can consciously redefine traditional concepts of femininity, freedom and love. Juliette opposes the obligation of the projection of life from the male, dominant perspective in social discourse. She gives thumbs down to Romeo, leaving him to die on the cold “bench!

Another brilliant theatrical experience shortly knocked on the door!

Thursday, February, 7. „OUR CLASS”… “I L. Caragiale” Theater and Film, University of Bucharest, Romania. Project coordinator:Tadeusz Słobodzianek (CLAS noastră)

The contemporary Polish writer’s “OUR CLASS” by Tadeusz Slobodzia‘s play is also on stage at the Budapest’s  József Katona Theater. This time  “OUR CLASS” was brought to the stage to Miskolc by the Bucharest Academy. The story ain’t  fiction, that is why it cuts like a blade. The story  is based upon a real life story! Deep drama performance, surely the audience breath frozen and become ice, even your heartbeat skips the beat several times. The play goes at  very small town in Poland, where everyone knows eachother. Happening in 1925 at the local Polish school. The class members destiny is followed up to the 20th century’s Central Europe. The shadows of the WW2 with its history traumas, personal testimonies and memories  taking place  before our very eyes. At this micro-community, we can see how the deeply close childhood friendship, step-by-step falling into pieces and they becoming the victims of their ideologies. Indeed, a fantastic group of talented third-year acting students. By-the-way, this play was their year’s examination performance. Also thumbs-up for the set, lighting and sound design which also marked the talented students work.

Following the performances lectures followed by informal professional conversations in which contemporary Hungarian playwriters and the other local and international artists could join the talks and raise direct Qs to the artists. Also, visitors were welcomed,  to take part at the lectures, by purchasing a pass-ticket. The full pass-ticket price was 3600HUF and the students and senior tickets price was 2400HUF.

Mentioning some other Hungarian and international productions on stage during the festival, such as the Spring Awakening (Frank Wesekind) with young adult actors from the University of  Theater and Film Arts, Budapest, directed by Róbert Alföldi . The „TOLDI”  was on stage also presented by the University of  Theater and Film Arts from Budapest. The “VISITATION”  was a  mutual production brought by the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding, Germany and  the Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Teatralna im. Ludwika Solskiego, Poland.

The second-year students from the Master of Fine Arts  University of designers  arrived from Kaposvár. Showed their own designed costumes of the puppets in  the play  Chekhov’s “SEAGULL”. Also, it is important  to note they were the ones who also planned the whole designing for the SZEM – EYE Festival’s  interior .

The 5 days SZEM -EYE  Theater Festival surely reached its goal. Was a fine time to explore the magic  kicks of  variety in different acting skills brought by local and international artists.

As it is known … the first step is the hardest … just like a baby’s first steep by reaching the first year. Now the SZEM -EYE’s first year’s theater festival showed its success, fulfilled the test with bringing on stage superb actors and productions, for us the visitors and for them to enjoy the gathering in these cold, grey days of winter, by bringing sunshine into many of our lives.

Congrats to Mr. Csaba Kiss Director,  Theater of Miskolc,  for the spark and lighting in organizing these theaterical events  and by all means congrates to his great supporting team to cover such an outstanding background to this unique  cultural international festival, not yet to have had taken  place anywhere in Hungary.

Curtain falls  … light goes off !

See you at Miskolc next year at the 2nd SZEM – EYE  European UniversitiesTheater Festival!

“FORINT”  /  “MEDEA”

(Forint = HUF –  stand for the small Hungarian change.)

Tuesday afternoon, February, 5.  Once more coming back to the first day of the afternoon’s great prelude at the Miskolc National Theater.  Two dancing  production in the  theater’s repertoire  was not in the schedule of the SZEM festival, yet a marvellous idea by the organizers to have brought it on stage,  not only to see by the international artists, but  as well by the locals and the Hungarians from the four corners of the country were able to learn how sophisticated talented dancing artists the National Theater of Miskolc has. The choreography was by Mr. Attila Kozma introducing by dancing Miskolc’s past life of hard-working class, hopelessness and violence. In the second act, Medeia, the terrible mother becoming the murder of her children without any explanation.

The two play’s in a nutshell … The first scene was in the heart of Miskolc, more precisely, at the warning traffic lights at  the “electric police”, i,e. at the traffic light’s on the main intersection.  There isn’t even one person at Miskolc and even around the country, which place talking about when saying the word “FORINT”  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7L6qojXaXU   Either at Miskolc or elsewhere in Hungary. It is as saying to an Aussie,  Bondi Beach, no matter if the person lives thousand of kilometers away from the scene, surely knows where to connect the place. The dance show of to-day speaks about a strange figure milling around  at this emblematic area. He lives in his own world on the street. He is not a beggar, and not fighting, nor barking at anyone. Most of the locals thinks he is a madman. He’s got hot-and-cold, merrily walking around, but sometimes screaming like hell, rushing  in a  hurry like he was about to be chased. He is „Sanyi” , Alex and a part of the cityscape.  The people were waiting for the tram to arrive … that never stopped for them … in the meantime they wanted to get Sanyi to speak with them, but the „lonely hobo” just carried on his everyday’s drama. What an enjoyable, excellent performance by twelve very talented young dancers, plus the lonely hobo! Interesting and thought-provoking story was unfolded in front of the audience. In the second act,  Medea, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skBncMLzY2o   the heroine of Greek mythology, the barbarian sorceress kills her children .. there is no limit of hatred. The grieving father asks to be given his children’s murdered  body, Medea denies even the funeral. The play’s dramaturg is Mr. Attila Rácz.

Wednesday afternoon, February, 06., Verscio „Yo SOY USTEDESM„ … “I AM YOU” –  Scuola Teatro Dimitri, Switzerland. Lights and sounds: Luca Sartori, Puppets: Laura Belli, Installations by: Raul “Nene” Vargas Torres, Tuthor: Davide Giovanzana.

In brief about the superb act: In the mist of darkness, a broad-shouldered man slowly sneaked through the paths of the audience, dressed as the high-priest entering the auditorium which was almost on the same level of the performance. With eyes wide open the audience minute-by-minute were swept to different scenes, dictatorship, scene from the bible, baby crying, the loud sound of electric saw and  merry sounds of the Carnival. even though the YO Soy Ustedes was a non-verbal solo-performance, the strong, absurd and surreal images were perfectly brought upon surface. We all frozen feeling the dramaturgic tension. Summarizing the actor and his act … “Nene’s” performance focused on human behaviors and reveals its relation to power, authoritarian, religion, love, double standard, the profane and sacred. The whole performance is based on the cyclical paradox of the history of Latin America. Raúl “Nene” Vargas Torres is a circus and physical theater performer from Bogotá, Colombia. He is currently finishing his Masters of Arts in Theater at Scuola Teatro Dimitri in Switzerland. Was lucky enough to catch him after the performance for short  interview.“Nene” was a simply, yet serious chap and more serious in every step in his performance. Asked him about his so-called early days …”I was 8yrs.old when I started to make performances on the streets of  Bogotá with my elder brother aged 12. We both had wonderful time on our street-shows, as jugglers, acrobatic, break-dancing,  playing on drums, percussion, making the folks walking by stop for a while to watch our show. As year went by, at the age of 18, I realized I wish to be a real artist, but I didn’t see the  road to get there in Columbia, so I first targeted France to study there, but without any certificate of proof of artist studies, I wasn’t excepted. Same happened later trying  in Italy. My high hopes were getting lower. Then I turned to Switzerland, there they didn’t ask for any “paper”. I showed performances and was excepted and from then on I am very grateful for the Swiss Nation to be studying there. Not to mention, I am  since then not performing as a hobby street dancer, but I am supported to study, teach and make performances. Soon I will be heading to Turkey for 2 months to join a theater class, as a mentor and also will  participate next month at Turkey’s annual ‘Street Festival”. I am ongoing in writing, arranging performances on my own, which I much enjoy.”  Q.: How did you come… influence to write “I AM YOU”?  “I wish to act so the audience will recognize themselves in my performances that it why the title is I AM YOU ! … Growing up in a post-war country imprints a lot of memories. Anyway, the play is integrated to be international.  Q.:  Are you living in democracy? A.: People can express freedom of speech, but there is no value to it. Overall, the TV channels  also have great power, in pack on our influence, and I do not even know what the truth is upon the fact. About  I AM YOU … it has a lot to do  with my Dad, he was a military man,  grow up, seen the movements going around.  It is absolutely natural, that everyone has more or less “V”, victory, a little dictator in him/herself … sorry to have said that, but this is how I feel. All the wars are the same. With my performance I wish, try to push people to think about it!…sighhhhh. “Nene” with a wide smile and shinning eyes said … “You know what !?!  Global warming is already the trigger,  then …all around the world will have to face the same problem. The time will come no need to look over the neighbor’s fence.”  Hmmm, I think a lot truth lies in his words . Very interesting artist and hope he”ll come around next year to the 2nd International SZEM Festival with some awesome show again. He was much appreciated by the locals and the international artists.

Wednesday, February, 6. „1984” Performing from the  Academy of Performing Arts Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The two of them, are alike Adam and Eve, led the battle against Oceania. Living in a country led by half-mythic leader the Big Brother. This was a deeply touching drama written by Life! Benjamin Bajramović  brought his graduation theater play to Miskolc. This drama’s premier was held on stage at the Sarajevo War Theater in November, 2011 and later in January, 2012  at the Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo.  The play is corresponding the adaptation of George Orwell’s:  “1984”.  Winston Smith, is an officer in totalitarian machinery of superstate Oceania, and one day he starts to think with his own head. How strange … the irony of life … George Orwell with this novel, even in the year of 1948 had in a way predicted the future we will live in. His ability was unsurpassed in noticing then the dissect social and political problems.  In deed, a very dramatic performance, where you  really felt, you were even nailed to your seat. After the act they invited the SZEM’s artists for a talk. Benjamin Bjramović  said: “It  was one year ago I graduated and this was my high examination act. During the show I say the word “History” 33times. Just thinking about any era History for the humanity was terrible. New dictatorships came-gone-came.”  He is fond of poems and his favorite time is spending on writing. Jasenko Pašić, joined this play upon request from his friend, Benjamin and was glad he excepted to be in the play.  Six years ago he graduated. Amila Terzimehić, said it is a very hard era that they are bringing alive on the stage. She feels lucky to have not felt on her skin these terrible days. Somehow her mother avoided her from the sights and pain, protected her whole family in not getting effected during those bloody days.  She said: “It is most important to show other  societies as well … even in our democracy nation … as  to keep in mind, the time is changing, but the wars are still going around  our world and that the horror that lights the fire should  never again show up and the  humans to have those experience.”

“SZEM” TO “SZEM” … “EYE” TO “EYE” … FESTIVAL AT THE NATIONAL THEATER OF MISKOLC

A STUDY TOUR TO THE “SZEM”  NAMELY TO THE “EYE” …

THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITIES  THEATER FESTIVAL AT THE CITY OF MISKOLC.

February, 5-10. 2013.

Being at the City of Miskolc, it is impossible not to stop for a  while to mention the illustrious dramatic actress, (Jókainé) Laborfalvi Róza (+November,20.1886.) who played on the stage of the National Theater Miskolc. She was the wife of Mr. Mór Jókai, the Hungarian realist theater pioneer, who himself entered the Hungarian theater history. The platitude is so true in the case of Ms. Jókainé Laborfalvi Róza, that „behind every successful man is a woman.” The only difference is that the “great Hungarian storytelling, the well-known writer was behind and next to her husband as a successful actress.

At her apex of glory in 1883, celebrating her artistic career 50 years jubilee  granted by the National Theater Miskolc, played her old-time favorite role of Volumnia in Shakespeare’s Coriolanus. The entire audience was present in full gala, as the presence of the King in person, I Franz Joseph personally crowned her by a golden cross on merit.4

On the occasion of the opening of the National Theater  Miskolc, September, 3. 1857., Mór Jókai held the opening speech and Róza Laborfalvi played as a guest actress. Ms. Laborfalvi retired from the stage in 1859 until  then she was most dominant drama actress in the house.

After skipping back in time, now wish to pull the attention to the “SZEM” = “EYE” … FESTIVAL  brought  in the frame with updates from inside the historical walls at the National Theater Miskolc.

A STUDY TOUR TO THE „SZEM” Festival at MISKOLC.

The 1st International University and College Theater Festival at the National Theater Miskolc

February, 5-10. 2013.

Hundered theater artists from Six European countries!

Mr. Csaba Kiss, Director National Theater Miskolc, opened the festival  saying why the festival is called SZEM? … (stands for EYE in Hungarian language) … „I believe  in the moment … a good conversation, a good meeting and the as „SZEM” –  EYE  sees, feels … it is about Confidence, Curiosity, Openness and Honesty. This is why the SZEM – EYE is represented on the festival’s flag,  it is important in terms of expression, because we feel, we are living in a very lean year in finding curiosity, openness an contacts. The  SZEM  – EYE is our first  international  festival by many reasons, just mentioning one … even though the National Theater at City of Miskolc is outside the capital of Hungary, organizing, bringing  European academic young adult artists performing with their homeland productions into our city  is unique  by itself. This evening at this 1st International  SZEM – EYE festival for what you are about to see and hear is shown by the young musical artists  member, bless with good voices from the University of Theater and Film Arts, Budapest, Hungary.  It is also rare to have a musical class with so many extremely talented singers. We would surely like to count on the group to perform at our forthcoming summer theater festival. Hope “we can work  it” ! The Director quoted an extract from Goethe’s fairy tale: „The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily… Where are you from? … The crevices  … said the snake – where the gold room. … What’s cooler than gold? … said the king. … Light – replied the snake. … What is more refreshing than light? … said the other. The conversation – was the answer”

At the end of  the director’s welcoming speech, he wished the audience not just only for this evening, but to the forthcoming 5 days performances to come along and enjoy the shows .  As he left the stage, the  lights slowly were turned into darkness. In the auditorium  softly whispering voices saying … good-night … good-night,  filled the air. When the lights were turned on again two-member of the band were on the stage  and the Beatles show began with the „Good-Night Sweetheart from the ’68 album of the Beatles. Wow … what a starter and the whole 2 hours was absolutely breathtaking… not just because of the young artist’s superb show, but each-and-every song’s lyrics were played on the stage, coming alive like the “Fool on the Hill” with excellent choreography. I bet this musical performance would be even number one in the UK, the homeland of the Beatles! The acts and the songs matched  perfectly. Sorry can’t bring  the picture but here are some titles  which were sung and played:  Sgt. Pepper, Let it be, Because, When I’m, 64, Your mother would know, Roll over Beethoven, I’ll be back , I need you, Misery, Ask me why?, Oh Darling, Something, Twist and Shout, Here comes the Sun, Fool on the Hill… oh but I mention that earlier, but many more unforgettable tunes were in the air. So this was just a sample of the jolly good tunes to come alive by the grand musical class’s show.  At the same time, seen at the show… listening to those unforgettable Beatles songs that once hit the charts  for many in the audience rang the bell of their once-upon-a-time loved songs caming alive again. Many were shaking their shoulders  and probably tapping the rhythm.   Thumbs-up for the class …well done indeed and hope this production will be on the „must see” performance in the near future throughout Hungary and abroad, because I believe these talented young adult artists from the Budapest’s  University of  Theater, will rock the stages no matter where they will be invited. The groups imagination showed their superb talent by reinterpreting the biggest BEATLES songs of the 60’s.  When the show came to the end, a storm of clapping hands fulfilled the theater hall and they were called back with nonstop applause six times to the stage.  Their success was in the air  … made many  their day, I mean  their night!  … „Happiness is a warm gun” … as the Beatles tune says … and it was all the way through. The young artist and the audience felt that warmth and happiness …  Bang … Bang … Shoot … Shoot … OH YEAH!!!

Three actors  in show are from Ms. Eszter Novák and György Selmeczi graduating class. They are spending their practical and tutorial period at the National Theater in Miskolc. They are also performing in every production brought to the stage at the National Theater  Miskolc.

Students of the musical actors’ class have had created an awesome musical theater, their full night performance on the opening  evening surely highlighted the SZEM Festival. With this production not only the musical, but the organizers of the SZEM – EYE festival really hit the high standards.

After the  first evening’s  production there was a  reception party arranged by Mr. Csaba Kiss, the director for all the participants  joining the SZEM – EYE Festival. Had a chance to ask him about how he was able to achieve  financially the background to bring it to happen this festival? A.: „Actually, this festival was low costed , because the participants are still attending their education time, therefore there was no fee involved.  Another note he added:  “Wished to organize a festival, by covering all the costs and by this way we were able to choose between the productions. There was no exclusion criteria. If you want to call someone and tell him/her that all costs will be covered by the organizers, then usually they will be available to virtually  be at any ensemble. In practice that meant, covering from our side such as the transportation, travel, boarding and lodging. The only „must” from our side  was to have them stay, share their views, learn from each others experiences. So the idea was to let them work together, be at workshops, getting acquainted with the others productions, build a relation with each other and enjoy their stay at Miskolc throughout the whole 5 days at the theater during the festival. “

Mr. Csaba Kiss also spoke about the European universities and academies saying: ” In Europe there are around 60-70 tertiary actor training institutions, universities and academies. About a half-a-year ago sent a circular letter around Europe’s institutions to see whether there is willingness and a production to bring to our festival. Requested to pass a DVD and we one-by-one  selected the  performances, thenafter  sent out our invitations to the institutions. Usually, the festivals are organized by the universities. The SZEM – EYE’s invitation was unique by itself, because a countryside National Theater  invited  Europe’s academic theater artists. This seemed to be a great opportunity to host the best theaters and their artists to participate, be together throughout  the festival’s five days. Furthermore, to work together, exchange experiences at these workshops  by staying for the time being (usually the hosted theaters and artist „lift-off ” as soon as they step down from the stage), get acquainted with the others productions, build a relation with each other and enjoy their stay at Miskolc throughout the whole 5 days at the theater during the festival. Last but not least as to remember for a long time their gain experiences at this festival and their stay at the City of Miskolc. Quoting Goethe at the opening, was … I believe and hope in the next coming five days we will admire the young professional, meet with them, have discussions, and  have a festival of openness, trust and curiosity.”
