Woody Allen Retrospective and Reloaded!

One of the world’s best writers and directors on-screen and also known by many Woody Allen and His New Orleans Jazz Band who also performed here in Budapest in the past, but this time remembering or easily remembered movies, especially because of being special to those Woody Allen movie lovers can be see his most favorite ones.

On the 1st of December he will be celebrating his 80th birthday. He  was born in Brooklyn, on December 1, 1935.  He is the  director who has the ability to talk about the most important things in life with such irony and joyful spirit like no one else  … no matter if it’s identity, attraction, past, sins, gods and humans, creation or all the distress surrounding these.

Happy Birthday – Woody Allen!  How better can it be to celebrate his birthday in Hungary than to screen  some of his awesome films. Stating on the date of his birthday  7 p.m. December, 1. 2015, with the movie from ’77  –  Annie Hall. Not too much of a surprise, it has recently been voted by the Writers Guild of America, as the funniest screenplay of all time! In the following couple of weeks  the audience may see 4 other incredibly rich masterpieces to return again on the big screen.

The retrospective event will bring back the director’s favourite’s themes, like …  love and criminal complications, creative crisis, deep self-examination. The first two movies will be projected with the legendary dubbing of András Kern who was Woody Allen’s Hungarian voice, while the other three will be screened in original language with subtitles.

Budapest Jewish Film Festival is the largest event of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe.

Movie lovers are more than welcomed to watch films which are screened once-a-year  m Hungary during the
israeli film week festival in Budapest.

The festival will take place between the  December,  3. – 9. 2015., with a line-up of the latest movies depicting today’s Jewish culture and heritage.

The Israeli Film Week has reach it the 19th.  anniversary  to be screening in Budapest.   The audience can watch both older and new films at Puskin Cinema as well as  to take part in listening to lectures. The Israeli Film Week is cooperation between the Embassy of Israel in Budapest and the Israeli Cultural Institute.

The Puskin Cinema is right in the middle of the Downtown area  and can easily  can say it is one of the most spectacular cinemas in Budapest. The Puskin  Cinema has been screening moving pictures since 1926, and back this was the largest cinema in Europe. The cinema went through a couple of reconstructions. To-day it has 3-halls  equipped with excellent visuals and sound.  Worthwhile to look around before the screening to see its  superb architectural and interior design.

The Advent candle lighting at the St. Stephen Basilica took place at 3.30 p.m. The square holds floodlight, gorgeous lighting to bring the real spirit of Xmas.

Every half-an-hour will resound the Nutcracker fairy tale music with stunning pictures on the monumental facade of the St. Stephan Basilica. This animation is filled with exciting light bulbs brought by the Hungarian visual creative group, the Kiégő every day.
During the Advent Festival a series of Xmas-themed music will be broadcasted.

As a gift to Hungary a production by ExperiDance showed the world premiere productions of Angels Choir.

The event’s supporting partners beside others was the representative of Toyota Central Europe and József Kocsis – Xerox Hungary greeted the huge number of audience on this wetty and chilly evening.

György Snell –  bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest, opened the Advent period and lit the first candle of the Advent wreath.

Locals, tourist who visit the venue along with family, friends will certainly enjoy the atmosphere and enjoy its fascinating activities, booth sales of the season each-and-every-evening.  In the middle of the square for the children is set a free ice rink with a huge Xmas tree in the middle. The organisers thought of the little ones as well and provided a free child care and play area.

The organizers also prepared to bring to the venue a series of cultural spectacular programs for the time being until  January, 2. 2016.

The Original Finnish Santa Claus Joulupukki arriving for the 13th occasion to Hungary! Saturday, November, 28. 2015.

Joulupukki’s visit to Hungary is organized by Finnagora, and Finnish Institute in Budapest.

The Original Finnish Santa Claus arrives for the 13th time to Hungary in the end of November 2015. Santa Claus, or Joulupukki as the Finnish children call him, comes straight  from the Lappish town of Rovaniemi not on  his sledge, but with the support of  the Finnish Airline – Finnair.

Joulupukki has been visiting Hungary since 2002. Already, brought happiness and smiles to thousands-and-thousand of children. He has been visiting several towns and cities throughout Hungary.

During his nine-day stay in Hungary, spreading the Xmas spirit to everyone. In addition to the public events, Joulupukki is also going to visit schools and orphanages. On his schedule will be visiting several cities and towns as: Surd and Zalaszentbalázs, Nagykanizsa, Pécs, Komló, Geresdlak, Ajka and Veszprém.

In Budapest children with their families may meet him in the Shoebox Castle, the Hungarian Baptist Aid venue at the Deák Square and at the Christmas Market – Downtown – Vörösmarty Square.

An exhibition definetely worthwhile to visit for art, culture and history lovers!

In Search of Prince Genji – Japan in Words and Images is the next show in a series of exhibitions presenting traditional Asian art from the collection of the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asiatic Arts alongside Hungarian contemporary artworks. Its focal point is the aesthetic ideal of traditional Japanese art and its reception in Europe.

Referred to as the world’s first novel, Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji) is considered as one of the most important literary works of the world.

Written in the early eleventh century by Murasaki, a lady-in-waiting at the Japanese royal court in the Heian period, the book recounts the adventures of a fictional character, the shining Prince Genji, in 54 chapters. The attribute ‘shining’ or ‘radiant’ (in Japanese: “Hikaru”) is an allusion to the refined intellect, taste and demeanour of prince Genji as well as to his other-worldly beauty. Despite being a fictional piece, it records in detail the customs of the Japanese royal court as well as the culture and etiquette of the Heian period. Although Genji monogatari was written for the entertainment of the court circle of Lady Murasaki, the author’s sophisticated ability of observation and meticulous description made the novel one of the main chronicles of medieval Japan. Thanks to the repeated modernisation of the Japanese text, the tale of the shining prince remained alive in contemporary Japanese culture, in a way that can only be matched to the Bible or ancient Greek myths in Europe.

The perfect beauty of Prince Genji and that of his world represents traditional Japanese aesthetic ideals.

Ever since the novel’s appearance, its various scenes have been widely depicted in paintings, woodcuts, lacquer works, ceramics,, and other art forms (photography, theatre) have also used it as a precious source. The collection of the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asiatic Arts preserves many artefacts, ranging from the late seventeenth century until today, that retell the story of Genji in either a narrative or symbolical way. Creating a balance between image and text, the current exhibition aims to show the novel’s uninterrupted presence in Japanese culture, while also displaying Hungarian artworks in order to illustrate its inspirational role in world literature and fine arts.

The exhibition wishes to present The Tale of Genji on several levels. It provides information about Lady Murasaki, the novel’s author, as well as about the structure of the text, the main events and the characters of the story. The importance of Genji pictures in Japanese visual arts are illustrated by narrative (yamato-e), symbolic, and parodistic (mitate) depictions. Games linked to the Genji monogatari (and how they were payed) in early modern Japan are shown through various artefacts. By walking through the halls visitors will learn about the artist of the highly valuable Genji album in the museum’s collection, about the structure of Japanese poems, or waka, and an entire set of Genji karuta (a 108 piece card deck) from the early nineteenth-century can also be seen.

The closing section of the exhibition is a double homage: the atmosphere of the old imperial capital, Kyoto, will be conjured up in words by László Krasznahorkai and in photographic images by Zoltán Gaál. Image and text are linked as closely in the presentation of the Hungarian works as they were in the earliest Genji manuscripts.

The exhibition is accompanied by a Hungarian and English catalogue including essays by several authors and rich in reproductions. Besides the studies on literary, photographic and art history, the volume contains a summary of the monumental novel (some 1,500 pages) about prince Genji. Each chapter of the story is illustrated by the corresponding picture of the Genji album of the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asiatic Arts, thus publishing the work in its completeness.

Tennis Classics Game-Day – Budapest – 2015

The Top Tennis Players on the ground at the Papp László Budapest Area surely Made the Day for the tennis fans.

The 8th Tennis Classics – Budapest, returned this fall for its annual tournament, which is one of the attractions in the sporty field that the Hungarians are so fond of. The actions started on Sunday, November, 24., late afternoon and ended after 10 p.m.

The four tennis titans lifted the rackets and was worthwhile to be present to see to hit the balls after 30 years. A real show of professionals.

Fitzgerald suffered a leg injury, cultivated twice, but even limping  he played the though the whole match. The Aussies after 6:6  had  three match ball, but the Hungarian-Swiss double reverse spectacular points and finally to 8-6 on the tie.break. The aggregation  the Čilić team result 19-14.

With the final act of the day, Čilić  – Tímea Babos, and Gasquet – entered the field on the side of compatriot – Kristina Mladenovic. The audience enjoyed their battle. Babos – Mladenovic won the duo at unexpectedly 3:3, and the “battle in the sexes” the ladies proved to be better 7:5.

During the breaks the fabulous hits of ’85 was out on-air. Fans had a chance to mingle with these greats and the chidren’s exitement was huge, rushing around-and-around in collecting the legends and stars autographs.

The event brought tremendous exposure and most probably the players had even more fun than the fans, but that’s just a guess.

The number of attendance, the atmosphere and entertainment value was much higher this year than at the previous year’s Tennis Classics Circuit.

In less than 24 hours the László Papp Budapest Sport Arena  will be formed into an indoor tennis court to enchants its audience!

Heard  this evening at the press meeting from Balázs Taróczy – main organizer, that the double Roland Garros winner, the Spanish Sergi Bruguera … who actually was here in Budapest at the 1st Tennis Classics Gala in 2008 … UNFORTUNETELY …  was injured last week, so he cannot make it to the tournament of this year to Budapest. Therefore, was a pleasure to invite and excepted the invitation  to come from the UK, the Australian tennis legend – Pat Cash. For many in the arena  will be a superb evening to watch the beauty of tennis, playing with the Wimbledon champion the Croatian Goran Ivanisevic.
The world ranking ninth Gasquet also looking back to the whole year of 2015, feels good. Said, to be in the top ten was his goal, which played a major role as reaching it at the Wimbledon semi-final.

Yesterday, the tournament winner  in Taiwan, the Hungarian Timea Babos arrived back to Hungary, after  thirty-six hours spending in-and-out on flights.. One of her flight was canceled, got stuck in the airport, but as she said, she  is tired but happily looking forward in playing with the French Kristina Mladenovic on  Tuesday at the 8th Tennis Classics Gala. Overall she very happy to have finished the season with tournament victories.

The triumphant Goran Ivanisevic in 2001, talked about he probably will remain forever the only one who was starting a wild card at Wimbledon champions.  Čilić is Ivanisevic student who said he is satisfied with this season results. Although he was injured at the beginning of the year, overall, had  successful tournaments. At the US Open semi-finals he proved that it was not a coincidence his last year’s championship.

This will be no regular game of tennis … legends arrive to play, entertain the audience at Tennis Classics match in Budapest!

Here in Hungary this is for the Tennis lovers the biggest Hungarian holiday and each year in November it is a major celebration of the Day.

Top players already have confirmed their participation to the Tennis Classics Grand Day in Budapest.

The rivalry between the hosted legends are not about the individuals. They come together for the love of playing tennis and showing the audience their superb way of handling their rackets and balls. Arriving to Budapest will be this year’s, Croatian Marin Čilić – US Open champion, and as well as the 11th in the world rankings, the French Richard Gasquet. The two currently active stars on the World’s tennis grounds.

This year’s Gala show will be held in a new format with a slight change compared to the previous year’s Tennis Classics games. This formation is modeled on the International Premier Tennis League – IPTL.

Legends together and against each other … playing in two teams! The two teams will strive for the victory that’s for sure! Women – men singles of previous legends matches, as well as in addition the tradition mixed doubles. In the teams competition … each and every game counts.

The members of the Team Marin Čilić will be the following: the Hungarian, Timea Babos – individual career-high ranking of the world ranking of the fifty-ninth and eighth in doubles at the end of June 2015., the Croatian Goran Ivanisevic – is the only person to win the men’s singles title at Wimbledon as a wildcard and currently coaching Marin Čilić, the Hungarian, Balázs Taróczy – World ranking No. 12 in 1982., the Swiss, Heinz Günthardt – ATP singles ranking of World No. 22 in 1986.

In the colors of the Team Gasquet, doubles will be on the ground:  the French, Kristina Mladenovic – best singles ranking of world number 36. in 2013, the Spanish, Sergi Bruguera – in 1989 ranked world No. 26. and has won the most Grand Slam titles and Australian, Pat Cash – won 6 singles titles, also reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 4 in 1988. Australian, John Fitzgerald – career-high singles ranking was World No. 25 in 1988.

The cream on top of the cake will be brushing up the greatest domestic success of all time in the rematch by Balázs Taróczy – Heinz Günthardt the legends of 1985 Wimbledon’s final.

Tradition and street food … same place … same time!

The Advent fair on the premises of the Saint Stephen’s Square,  just in front of the Cathedral , the magical fair arrives to enjoy by locals and foreigners the season’s holiday.

From the last weekend of November visitors may enter this joyful world decorated with Christmas lights. Here the festive ambience of the 5-week long Christmas preparation is ensured by almost 200 programmes, the handicrafts of 80 vendors and the international food and drink selection of the street food section in Zrínyi Street. Every night visitors might admire the 3D light paintings on the monumental façade of the Cathedral, while children can enjoy the huge ice rink around the 9-meter tall Christmas tree or they can bake honey-cake hearts, and everybody can dance together at the folk dance evenings. Following the traditions, on 1st of January Lentil Day is going to be held, when the fortune-making New Year’s dish – prepared by different recipes – will be available at the gastronomic exhibitors and street food vendors.

The square in front of Saint Stephen’s Cathedral – which is one of Hungary’s most important churches and tourist attractions – is going to be the most spectacular and eventful meeting point in Budapest from November, 27 to  January, 2. 2016. Last year Saint Stephen’s Basilica got into the CNN’s Top 10 list of the most photographed places in the world, and hopefully the visitors’ stunning photos will flood again This year the Advent Feast at the Cathedral is welcoming its visitors with the largest and the most spectacular visual attraction of the country. Colourful short movies will come to life in 3D on the 1000  m2 façade of the Cathedral, while the festive lights of the square and the Inner City will provide a magical setting for a winter walk. During the 35 days of the Advent fair families and groups of friends will find a great variety of programmes, exclusive events and charity functions.

The 200 m2 ice rink around the magically decorated Christmas tree will remain the centre of the fair for the greatest joy of the children who can use it free of charge or even participate in the skating courses at the weekends. In the “Hunger for Love” bakery, set up by the Hungarian Inter-Church Aid,volunteers and visitors will prepare honey-cake hearts together with special surprise guests supporting the charity to thank its donors for their generosity.

At the fabulous wooden houses in front of the Cathedral the fair’s visitors may choose between countless carefully pre-selected, great quality handcrafted gifts and the design items of talented young artists. This year the craftsmenʼs stalls will occupy a larger area including the way connecting Bajcsy-Zsilinszky and Hercegprímás Streets next to the Cathedral, to offer even more products than in the previous years. Amazed by the abundance of gifts visitors may taste the holiday season’s most popular dishes along with this year’s novelties. While having fun outdoors in the cold winter weather, they can the steaming hot dishes with selected hot cocktails.

The Advent Feast at the Cathedral  is getting an exciting new addition this year. Street food, which was a successful debut last year, will take over the whole Zrinyi Street this year, and fill it with exotic food, Advent delicacies and the flavours of international cuisine. From Sas Street to Széchenyi Street the coolest Hungarian food trucks and street food vendors will be present such as Zing Burger, KolBice, BudDog, Paneer, MexKitchen, Balkán Grill, Befaló Bill, DiVino and Korhely. More than 30 exhibitors will provide food meant to be eaten on the street such as pancake, grilled sandwich, soup, “new wave” flat bread, lángos, pljeskavica, Italian sweets and salty titbits – to seduce the workers of the surrounding office buildings from the boring daily menus and to treat those who will come here to check out the greatest street food extravaganza of the holiday season. Following the New Year’s traditions Lentil Day will close the series of the fair’s gastronomic events on 1st of January.
