Pannonhalma Benedictine Abbey Winery won again “Winery of the Year”

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

After 2010, this year, in 2023, the Pannonhalma Benedictine Abbey Winery won the “Winery of the Year”. Their winery has been found worthy of recognition for the second time.

The award was founded by the Hungarian Wine Academy, the National Council of Mountain Communities and the Association of Hungarian Wine Growers. The award is given every year to a winery that sets the standard in the Hungarian wine industry. The award ceremony was held in the Viator event center of the Pannonhalm Archabbey in the presence of distinguished representatives of the wine industry, supporters and journalists.

The professional program started from the tasting terrace with a retrospective wine tour, in the framework of which head winemaker Zsolt Liptai spoke about the circumstances of the re-establishment, the experiences of the first years with the late consultant Tibor Gál, viticulture and winemaking work, technological developments and cultural events, while it was possible to taste the Winery’s offer from station to station items known as its main elements. The lavender plantations in the monastery and the wonderful view of the landscape stretching to the east are worth to highlight in the company of fine wines. The wanderer award  by István Madarassy Kossuth-prized sculptor and goldsmith. From the sculptor veil was lifted which was named Szőlősgazda (Grape Owner) and the decorative certificate and the commemorative package were handed over by the representatives of the tendering organizations in the presence of the artist.

Abbot T. Cirill Hortobágyi reminded those at present … going back-in-time … that in 996, Prince Géza settled the fit monks from Bohemia on the Holy Mountain of Pannonia. Upon their arrival, the Benedictine monks not only founded a church and a school, but also brought with them the agricultural and craft culture necessary for settled life. They tried to be self-sufficient. Grape and wine culture also belonged to this, so the abbey had vineyards on the surrounding hills from its foundation. The monastery built in honor of St. Martin of Tours, according to the intention of the princely foundation, became the eastern bridgehead of the culture of medieval Europe. Saint István (1000-1038), the first Hungarian king, visited its walls regularly.

From the terrace the monastery and its surroundings were simply stunning amazing.  Following the reception of the award ceremony, the invited regions winemakerkers,  distinguished guests and media representatives were welcomed tasting the local white-and-red wines and at the time being listen to the excellences of the Hungarian jazz life Tamás Berki – jazz singer, Péter Sárik – Erkel award-winning jazz pianist, alongside András Jász – jazz saphonist, absolutely matched the uplifting atmosphere … music and wines perfectly hand-in-hand.

The Pannonhalma Benedictine Abbey Winery farms lies in the area of 52 hectares, thanks to its ten-year replanting program, only harvests grapes from newly established and now fully productive plantations, reaching its winemaking capacity with an annual production of 400,000 bottles.

The wines from Pannonhalma Benedictine Abbey are present on the market in Hungary,  in many European countries, and forthermore winelovers can reach them even overseas.

One of the most favorit among the tasters was the Pannonhalma Pinor Noir  – ALC 14.5 % – 2018 PDO … The grapes for this Pinot Noir have been harvested from 3 local vineyards, each site contributing its own distinstive characher. The wine was matured in Hungarian oak barrels for 10 months prior to bottling.

Must admit absolutely mouthwatering the Pannonhalma Hermina – AlC14% -2021 – PDO… Quality Dry Red Wine …  was said the following: “Everyone has his own gift from God, one in this way and another in that (1.Cor.7.7) It is therefore with some misgiving  to that we regulate the measure of the men’s sustenance. Never-the-less, keeping in view, we belive that a hermina wine a day is sufficient for each-and-everyone (Rule of Saint Benedict)”

Overall let the slideshow snaps speak about the uplifting event.

The Boys Are Back In Town – MAN DOKI SOULMATES Budapest

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Upon their 30 years of existence, the supergroup he leads… the MAN Doki Soulmates, is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a concert in Budapest.

The boys are back in town with musician-producer Leslie Mandoki’s band, and visited Mandoki’s Soulmates. The main rehearsal toom place at Bem quayside Club on Thursday, August 17, 2023.  On Friday, 18. August Mandoki Soulmates will give a free jubilee concert with world stars, including Grammy Award-winning guitarist Al Di Meola, American jazz guitarist Mike Stern, bassist Richard Bona and jazz trumpeter John Helliwell (one of my favorites from Supertramp) at the Basilica on the Szentáromság square – Budapest. The concert starts at 7 p.m. and to grab your seats early cause the seats are limited.

After a small band rehearsal, musician-producer Leslie Mandoki introduced the artists joining the band at the Mandoki Soulmates press conference on Thursday evening. In addition to the international stars, he also introduced domestic performers Caramelt and Misi Mező, with whom they will also perform at the concert on August 18.

Even before his defection from Hungary in 1975, he played music on this stage with such fame as the giant flute artist Ádám Török+.

After jamming, a short press conference was held. He said that they started this year’s tour with their American and English friends, and they wanted to come to Budapest at first before the tour to Europe. He introduced the Budapest soulmates team. This year, the biggest American-English soulmates group will take the stage. He also talked about how Al Di Meola gave the name of the super group, he and the Grammy-winning guitarist know each other preety well, and have formed a lifelong friendship. He emphasized that this is not a retro group, different musical styles come together… Hungarian folk music, fusion jazz, funky, soul, rhythm&blues.

He said they wrote a “Peace Song” which maybe doesn’t fit in the mood of the whole world at all… BUT still… as he said: Q.:” We are the grandchildren of the Woodstock generation and felt that we now owe it to the audience to address the song which title is: Devil’s Encyclopedia .

Q.: “About the choosen venue this time. The Basilica played a major role in selecting the venue, we had to make sure that the audience had the best in every aspect, so that they could enjoy every moment of the four and a half hour concert.”

Mandoki spoke about how he fled Hungary,  he was a dissident in 1975. Beyond on the other side of the border,  he was asked where he was going, he said to America because he wanted to be a famous musician as his role models. Since then he has lived in Germany and America. He himself wrote the lyrics of the songs in English, because even though he loves the varied Hungarian language, it is easier to write in English.

Added: Q.: “What keeps this fantastic team of 35 people together is the community of values, the love of music and most of all the fact that we are SOULMATES … we live with the audience, this is what has kept the band together for 30 years”.

The soulmates musicians have won a total of more than 35 Grammy awards so far, and the number of audio carriers sold exceeds 350 million.

In 2023 Hungary’s Sugar-Free cake “Kikelet” won the competition.

20230801_CMOT_2023_slide_2

Hungary’s Sugar-Free Cake competition was organized for the 12th time by the Egy Csepp Figyelem Foundation and the Hungarian Confectionery Industry Association.
This year, the creation made without added sugar by confectioner Zsófia Lawal-Papp from Makó won the Egy Csepp Figyelem Alapítvány Hungary’s Sugar-Free Cake competition with her sweet “Kikelet”. The winning confectioner strove for a refreshing harmony when creating the creation. She dreamed up the cake around a drop of black tea, created the perfect harmony with blueberries and a touch of lavender, which is completed by the vanilla white chocolate mousse and the almond and lemon sponge made without grain flour. The energy content of one slice of “Kikelet” is 236.8 kcal, while the carbohydrate value is 11.8 g, so it can be a good choice for diabetics, but we recommend it to everyone who is careful about the ingredients of what they eat.

The second place in the competition was the creation of the pastry chefs of the Reök Artisan Bakery in Szeged, the “Pumpkin Raspberry”, and the third prize went to Gabriella Raffer, the pastry chef of the G&D Artisan Bakery in Salgótarján, for the creation of the “Randevú” cake.

This year, the cake with the fanciful name “Spicces fig respektus” created by Pál Lakatos, confectioner of Levendula és Kert Cukrászda in Szigetszentmiklós, can bear the title of Cake of Hungary. The cake is made up of a whipped joconde with almond flour, a soft salted caramel mousse cream and a nut-caramel crisp, which also contains cocoa bean crumbs. Tokaji black cherry fig jelly and milk chocolate mirror jelly with acacia honey make this flavor really special, which is crowned by the white chocolate ganache with acacia honey and the walnut sable disc. In the name of the cake, the adjective “spices” refers to the wine content of the fig jelly, while “respect” is the creator’s tribute to his teachers and mentors.

From the 19th of August Hungary’s Cakes can be tasted in Magyar Ízek Utca @ Várkert Bazaar, and @ hundreds of pastry shops across the country.
