On the occasion of its 35th anniversary, the restored 4K 2D version of Terminator 2 – Judgment Day will be shown again, with the original Hungarian dubbing and in English, with Hungarian subtitles on the big screen. But the classic work will also be shown in the 3D version made by James Cameron. Moreover, in a unique way, in the Budapest Lurdy cinema, the film will also be shown in 3D version, with a perfect never-before-seen spatial effect, on a 60-nm Samsung Onyx LED wall.
Pannónia Entertainment celebrated the 40th anniversary of the first Terminator in 2024, and now the cult sequel is not left out of the stream. The 4K and 3D renovation of the movie version was inspired by the 2012 Titanic and 2013 Jurassic Park versions. James Cameron, together with the original crew members – e.g. the effects technicians and the cinematographer – reused the raw CGI files and copies, adding the fresh technology that was also used in the two Avatar episodes that have been released since then.
The director insisted on the cinematic version, but at the same time corrected a few bugs that bothered him with digital editing afterwards. Perhaps the two most striking scenes are during the truck chase, when we could clearly see the stunt biker in the saddle instead of Arnold Schwarzenegger at one point, and when the T-1000 breaks the front window of the tractor-trailer truck twice due to a cutting error.
The 3D version was originally planned for 2016, but the work was so time-consuming that it missed the 25th anniversary, so it was only finished in 2017, when Titanic hit the big screen on its 20th birthday after its 15th. T2’s next anniversary was washed out by the pandemic, but now, having turned 35, it will be available in cinemas again, but this time in a more limited way than 9 years ago, for only 2 weeks, in selected cinemas nationwide.
Judgment Day itself falls on August 29th, and so it will be shown in cinemas worldwide from August 27th to mid-September. It will be shown in Hungary from September 3rd, at the same time as the United Kingdom, Australia and several Western European countries.
Of course, in addition to the 3D, the 2D version also received the 4K resolution that comes with the renovation, and the bugs were patched. The director did not leave the film’s second 2D/3D premiere without comment: “T2 was made for cinemas and new version, created with loving care, has already proven to be the best way to see the film. It’s gratifying that it can be shown again. After 35 years it’s okay to give spoilers, but in case it bothers anyone, SPOILER ALERT: the film is about the good guys triumphing over the superintelligence of AI. And this message makes this year’s re-release perhaps more relevant than ever in our times.”
Of course, the Terminator has faithfully returned many times over the past 35 years, but they have never been able to repeat the success and impact of this indelibly historical adventure.
So on the first premiere day of the fall, plan in advance welcoming Hasta la vista, viewer fan to this first opportunity in many years. The veterans, because they know what an experience it is, the new (or perhaps first-time) viewers, because they don’t know, and the Guns N’ Roses fans for the theme song. Hasta la vista, viewers!
