The Wolf Prize in Music – Sir Paul McCartney sharing with  Hungarian conductor

Ádám Fischer

On Monday the Wolf foundation announced its winners for 2018, with laureates also in the fields of chemistry, agriculture, mathematics and physics.

Israel’s prestigious Wolf Prize is honoring Sir Paul McCartney this year as well as scientists from the U.S., Japan and Britain, among other countries.

The Wolf Foundation said that Sir McCartney “is one of the greatest songwriters of all time.” … (An organizer said the foundation had notified McCartney’s representatives. Yet it was not immediately known if the former Beatle will appear in Israel for the award ceremony in May.)

The Hungarian ÁdámFischer conductor is being recognized by the prize committee for his music called him “an inspirational conductor and eloquent defender of human rights.”

The Wolf Foundation, the nonprofit organization that presents the awards, recognized Fischer for his work as conductor of the Vienna State Opera, the Düsseldorf Symphony, the Danish National Chamber Orchestra, the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra and many others, as well as for his political activism. Fischer is a member of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee.

Fischer is the second Hungarian musician to receive the prize after avant-garde composer György Ligeti. More than 30 awardees of the prize have gone on to receive the Nobel Prize.

The Wolf Foundation was established in 1975 with a $10 million endowment from the Wolf family. While it is a private, non-profit NGO, its activities are overseen by the State Comptroller of Israel, and the culture minister acts as chairman of its council.

The Reunification of the Two Koreas – Katona József Theater – Budapest

Coming up  performances during the month of April with English subtitles

Katona József Theater – Budapest

District, V., 6. Petőfi Sándor Street

Tuesday, April, 17. 2018.

Katona József is one of the major art theaters in Hungary, staging classic Hungarian and international drama, as well as a selection of contemporary plays. The theater gives great importance to foreigners living in Budapest/Hungary by presenting Hungarian actors performance.

JOËL POMMERAT: THE REUNIFICATION OF THE TWO KOREAS  – length of the performance 2Hs

The Reunification of the Two Koreas is not about politics. It is neither about Korea nor Hungary. It can be applied to everything and everybody, as it presents both tragic and comic situations; a French newspaper called it “the tart kaleidoscope of human relations”. “The Reunification of the Two Koreas is a series of unrelated snapshots. These ironic-humorous fragments of stories are most similar to a number of short stories written on the same subject.” – says the author on his play.

Joël Pommerat is one of the most interesting creators of today’s French theater; he is an author, director and artistic director at the same time. He only directs his own plays, his working method is based on cooperative experimenting and improvisation. On his fortieth birthday he has started an unusual project: he promised the actors of his company to write a new play for them each year through the next forty years. The project has been going on since 2004. Pommerat and his company have worked and is still working in Peter Brook’s theater, Théatre des Bouffes du Nord, the Odéon of Paris and the National Theater of Brussels as well. The Reunification of the Two Koreas premiered in the Odéon, in 2013.

Rafael Yossef Herman Exhibition – Ludwig Museum – Museum of Contemporary Art – Budapest

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

February, 16. – April, 1. 2018.

Open: 7 days a week except Monday 10a.m.- 8 p.m.
Temporary exhibitions (1st and 2nd floors)

Ludwig Museum – Museum of Contemporary Art – District, IX. 1. Komor Marcell Street -Budapest

Guided tours in English language.

The exhibition presents recent works by Rafael Yossef Herman known for creating his work with the hidden existence of the night’s darkness.

By observing this large-scale photographic installation, the Israel-born artist’s representation of the nocturnal world may look like daylight to the viewer. Encapsulating or imaginary realities Herman examines the limits of surrealism and timeless reality. In a sense he is researching virtually.

Virtual realities, games, simulations that are so influential to the present let us seek into areas unknown to the human eye. The night landscapes shot by Herman do not exist for our eyes. These strange lights of the night normally can only be perceived by technology.

Compared to the experience of the real daylight, we perceive odd shadows, moonlight features, color spectrum and shimmering details that differ from sunlight. Rafael Y. Herman strives to create a new reality out of the mystery of the night. He highlights the fact that although the night landscape is close to us, its reality does not exist for the observer. These sites never existed for the human eye, just snapshots, insights into another reality. Curator: Attila Nemes.

“Rafael Y. Herman was born in 1974 in Be’er Sheva, Israel. The winner of the Prague Photosphere Award in 2015, Herman began studying classical music at the age of six, becoming a percussionist in Philharmonic orchestras, ensembles and rock bands. Following a long stay in New York City, he studied at the School of Economics and Management at the University of Tel Aviv. Graduating in 2000, he moved to Latin America, taking a long research trip in seven countries: photographing Cuban musicians, the Carnival of Bahia and the Zapatistas in Mexico, working with Amnesty International in Paraguay, then studying painting in Mexico City and Chile and becoming part of an artists’ commune. This visual apprenticeship combines vision, metropolitan experience and encounters with uncontaminated nature. In 2003, Herman moved to Milan, showing the project “Bereshit- Genesis” at Palazzo Reale, a project created with a method of his own devising: nocturnal photography without electronic aids or digital manipulation, revealing what cannot normally be seen by the naked eye. This exhibition launched Herman into the international art scene. His works are in prominent public and private collections, including the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the Salsali Private Museum of Dubai and MAXXI national museum, Italy. Herman’s recent solo exhibition in the magnificent Testaccio pavilion of MACRO museum in Rome claimed great international attention and marked the largest exhibition of the artist prior to the Ludwig Museum solo Exhibition in Budapest. Rafael Y. Herman is an invited artist of Ville de Paris at La Cité Internationale des Arts and currently works and lives in Paris.”

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue.

Hungarian Folk Embassy present the Era’s Folk Songs – Uránia National Film Theater – Budapest

There is no art without poetry, folk poetry, and vice versa.

This is the main message of the Hungarian Folk Embassy. Folk Songs  to the Era – János Arany …staying alive on the lips of the folks. This is the first album. On February,13. the band will celebrate their five years jubilee and will present the audience their new record at the Uránia – National Film Theater  – Budapest jubilee.  Ms. Márta Sebestyén –  patron who is also involved with the concert along with Péter Blaskó and József Rácz, performers of the National Theater Association.

It is no coincidence that even the deepest and most complex themes of János Arany’s poetry are the same purity and formal simplicity as the folk song. This is due to the fact that not only did they draw from them – in some places, accurately marking the source melody – but many of their poems folklorists, fertility affecting peasant poetry. Arany’s as poet pictures appear until the end of the 20th century on the lips of the peasantry again and again, proving that the message of the Golden Lion is always contemporary.

It is also performed with other poems: “mellett: Mátyás anyja, Rákócziné, Rab gólya, A betyár, Rásüt az
esthajnal” …Folk Songs to the Era …

Contributors: Milán Hetényi – singing, András Soós – the first violin,  Mihály Rosonczy-Kovács – second violin, Tamás Orsós – alto, Luca Hegedűs – cimbalom, versus,  Zoltán Hanusz – double bass.

Also: Márta Sebestyén – vocals, Péter Blaskó – poem, prose, József Rácz – poem.
