A little bit of background to Saint Patrick … Despite his Irish notoriety, Saint Patrick was British. St. Patrick’s Day observes of the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. According to Irish legend, Saint Patrick used the shamrock  … a three leaf clover …  as a metaphor  to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish, when he was first introducing Christianity to Ireland.

One of the reasons to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day is because of Ireland’s nickname “The Emerald Isle” – Ireland itself is even known as the “Green Isle”.  St Patrick’s Day (Lá Fhéile Pádraig) is Ireland’s national holiday. The holiday has evolved into a celebration of Irish culture with parades, festivals, special foods, music, dancing, drinking and a whole lot of green.

Green has been worn to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day since the 1640s, going back to when St. Patrick himself explained religious idea. The tradition is tied to folklore that says wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns.
One of the lucky St. Patrick’s Day traditions in Ireland is to don the color green, as the hue symbolizes Ireland’s lush landscape. The Irish tricolor flag is meant to represent Ireland’s Catholic heritage and nationalism, while the orange represents the Protestant minority. The white between the two represents peace between Catholics and Protestants.
