Urban Art Festival for Urban Art Lovers – City of Pécs

Renowned domestic and foreign street art artists present themselves at the Street Up international exhibition in the Zsolnay Cultural District. A skateboarding exhibition titled Art of Skate can be seen in the downtown Pécs Gallery, in addition to hip-hop and skateboarding presentations, professional workshops, lectures, and guided tours, the festival’s program runs until September. In the 21st century, street art as an independent art form is unavoidable. In 2024, the Pécs Zsolnay Örökségkezelé NKft. Pécs Galleries – Visual Arts Center would like to further expand its genre palette.

At the beginning of the summer, with a series of comprehensive urban art exhibitions and a festival, it tries to present the antecedents, domestic and foreign appearances and different trends of the urban art that developed progressively from the 70s, both at m21 and at the Pécs Gallery between May 24 and September 22.

One of the outstanding exhibitions of the event is the ART OF SKATE – skateboarding from California to Pécs exhibition, which presents the history and art of skateboarding from the first attempts until it became an Olympic sport in 2021. The exhibition presents around 150 skateboards made with artistic works, relics of the skateboarding lifestyle, related fashion and works of art, photos and cultural phenomena. In 2022, more than 50,000 visitors saw the exhibition in Paris. It is curated by Philippe Danjean, an independent curator, art specialist and renowned urban art collector. The exhibition can be visited from May 24 to September 15 in the Pécs Gallery.

In the m21 Gallery in Zsolnay Quarter, the title exhibition of the festival, STREET UP, which presents street art works, can be seen from May 30 to September 22, which was created with the cooperation of the international independent curator Yasha Young. The 5 artists he represents in the exhibition are recognized and sought-after creators of international street art: Nuno Viegas from Portugal, Christian Boehmer and Adultremix from Germany, Julien de Casabianca from France, and Millo from Italy, the most mentioned creator of street art books.

At the invitation of the gallery, the French artist Erell, who won a special prize at last year’s LOKART in Pécs, the French-Austrian creative couple Jana and JS, the Polish NDZW and the Romanian Lost Optic, all of whom are participating in street art festivals (such as the annual Vienna Street Art Festival) will come to the exhibition ) well-known and popular creators, as well as the Venezuelan Zeus Salas.

In addition to the international field, the exhibition will also feature outstanding artists of Hungarian street art: Fork Imre, Void, Fat Heat, Gospe, MNU, Mejo, as well as Napush and FSing.

Imre Fork, a cult figure of Hungarian graffiti art, will also be the creator of this year’s Light Carpet covering Janus Pannonius Street at the Zsolnay Light Festival in July. Pécs street art is represented by the works of Renesound.

The conceptual works of the French Société Réaliste, the creative community of Ferenc Gróf and Jean-Baptiste Naudy, which creates conceptual art works from urban signs, scrutinize and reinterpret the signs of social publicity, similar to urban art. Their works mark the possible endpoint of urban art and its meeting with contemporary fine art.

The aim of the Zsolnay Heritage Management Visual Arts Center is to introduce peripheral genres of urban art to the general public. Thus, at this year’s exhibition, visitors can vote on which works they would like to see beyond the walls of the gallery at the next Street UP event.

Not to miss to pop by to see the amazing collection of skate boards on display such as … ones inspired by AC/DC and Vasarely, as well as tribute boards by American pop-art and graffiti artist Keith Haring. Famous New York graffiti artist Lady Pink, Kenny Scharf, Andy Warhol and Cleon Peterson also present themselves in a playful form on these surfaces. Furthermore, the first skateboard prototype, theAmerican skateboarder of the Tokyo Olympics, will be here competition jersey and the medals of the skateboarding race of this year’s Paris Olympics.

The 16th “Tatai Patara 1597” Hungary’s Turkish Era Historical Festival

Tata-Tatai-Patara-02

Central Europe’s most special festival is coming, where you too can defeat the Turks

May 24-26, 2024

On this coming week-end those interested can witness the spectacular clashes between Hungarian and Turkish armies from the past on the banks of the Old Lake at Tata. Traditionalists dressed in period clothes will relive the events and interesting facts of the siege of Tata Castle 427 years ago. The “miracle weapon” of the age, the patara, will be also introduced. On this anniversary day of May, the 1597 siege of Győr, the Tata garrison, is regarded as Győr’s outpost at the end of the century, recalls the events of the time and commemorates the Komárom castle captain Count Miklós Pálffy, who captured the castle using a new weapon, the patara, and his heroic soldiers, as well as the Ottoman armies that confronted them.

The three-day series of events will welcome visitors on the shores of Öreg-tó between May 24 and 26. The opening ceremony of the event will take place on Saturday, May 25 at 10 a.m. in Tata’s Castle Square. At the event, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, Minister of National Defense of Hungary, patron of the “Tatai Patara 1597” Turkish Period History Festival, will be holding a welcome speech.

Dressed in period clothes and equipped with authentic weapons, the reenactors re-enact the battles between the Hungarian and Turkish armies that took place 427 years ago based on the surviving historical documents, such as Count Miklós Pálffy’s victory report.

At the event, more than 500 traditionalists present the muskets, mortar cannons and falconettes of the period in action to the interested parties. May see equestrian and archery demonstrations. On the spot also to ease the thirt and hunger, the finest wines of the Neszmély wine region and the masterpieces of Turkish cuisine. On the “Deák-Patara” and National Defense Day “time travel”, arriving students can learn about the history of Hungary under the Turkish occupation, while “Aprajafalv”a” = Small kids village awaits their presence.

At the event, the 1st Armored Brigade of Tata’s MH Klapka György awaits the curious with a military technology demonstration, while visitors to the site can choose products of true to age from the 135 artisan vendors.

There will be a spectacular element of the program series on Friday evening, after the volley of muskets, fireworks launched from the nasadas lit up with torches on the Old Lake, as well as the siege brightened by the deployment of the patara on Sunday afternoon, and the hoisting of the Hungarian flag on the castle promontory.

History and the patara in brief: At the end of the 19th century, Tata Castle, as a suburb of Komárom and Győr, changed hands several times. In May 1597, the forces led by Count Miklós Miklós, the castle captain of Komárom, approached the fortress hidden from Dunaalmás, and after the arrival of the expected reinforcements from Esztergom, they began the attack on May 23, in the evening hours. Here in Hungary, the patara, operated by military engineer Johann Bernstein, was deployed for the first time. It was a bell-shaped device made of bronze and filled with gunpowder, and after it was ignited, it burst through the castle gate and opened the way for the besieging royal armies.

May your week-end be filled with entertainment rolling back in time.

The 25-year-old Matrix 4K version is coming to Budapest’s cinemas again this year!

MATRIX

For over just one week, celebrating the cult work’s quarter-century anniversary in a dignified way, by the Pannónia Movie Ltd. Whether already seen the movie wayback the classic 1999  film … never mind … for those who have seen the movie wayback will be a time trip and for those probably be stuck in a cinema seat who are seeing it for the first time. Have had been revolutionized several aspects of the film industry yet its still felt today. Will be on screem at two Budapest cinemas during the first week of the summer, beginning on May 30.

The questioning of its originality was already a topic at the time of its premiere, since in addition to the 136-minute sci-fi, two other titles dealt with the theme of virtual reality simulation in the same year, namely 13th Floor and David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ – The Game of Life, moreover, all three Within 2 months, it debuted in English-speaking territories.

Of course, the topic is only one thing, the Wachowskis didn’t invent the various visual solutions themselves (John Woo had a great influence on them), they just knew how to use them so well that the Matrix rightly jumps in right away if  (editor”Q” … remember the time-slowing bullet time effect, 25 years ago was out of space on screen). Anyway, there was a similar one in Penge a year earlier …  just a reminder of the camera movement that freezes the image and goes around with shots taken by cameras at the same moment. The birth of the term bullet time itself is already associated with the film, and although Hollywood also used it fondly – not only as a parody – it eventually found a serious afterlife in the gaming industry with classics such as the Max Payne trilogy or Need for Speed: Most Wanted from 2005.

The breathtaking visual effects have aged perfectly well, especially in today’s already overused CGI ocean, which often produces worse-looking final results, despite the fact that two and a half decades have passed. That is why, in addition to all the iconic elements and visible parts of the Matrix, it is still a refreshing sight on the big screen, assails our ears with even more memorable music and sound effects, with so many hit-list songs.

There is hardly any need to dwell on the actors and the story for such an influential work. Although its sequels are strongly divisive, the first part celebrating the anniversary is surrounded by unanimous love. In order to provide the greatest possible experience on the cinema screen in 2024, the cult film, which won 4 Oscars out of its 4 nominations, will be screened in the latest 4K version.

From May 30 to June 5, it will be possible to indulge in nostalgia in two different formats, or to experience the pill selection on the big screen for the first time. Ticket can be purchased for synchronized performances at the Lurdy Cinema, and subtitled performances at the Cinema MOM.

An age-restricted movie, therefore above 16 yrs.

    Premiere date: May, 16. 2024.

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN is the award-winning and popular British art history film series that presents the careers and biographies of some of history’s most acclaimed artists, in this case Picasso’s oeuvre.

Pablo Picasso is one of the most famous in art history: his paintings, sculptures and ceramics are ubiquitous, yet few know the remarkable story of his rise to greatness. From this point of view, the film follows Picasso’s path to world fame. How did it come about? For a long time, the role of the early years in its success was overlooked: education, learning leading to extraordinary results. Three cities played a key role in his youth: Malaga, Barcelona and Paris. The filmmakers visited all three and examined their influence on Picasso. The documentary analyses two key periods: the so-called blue and pink era, i.e. the period up to 1907, when he often portrayed himself as, for example, Harlequin. Then, in 1907, the painting Miss Avignon was born, which brought about a turning point not only in his own art, but also in fine art in general. And Picasso was only 25 years old at the time!
The film was made in collaboration with the museums:  Malaga, Barcelona, Picasso in Paris and MOMA in New York. The film was also shown successfully at the Malaga Film Festival and the Barcelona Film Festival.

“BitterSweet” Drama – Hungarian State Folk Ensemble @ Budapest

Here is a glance and deeply worthwhile for not only tourist living or coming to Budapest to catch up with truely Hungarian traditional folk dance.

    00141328 bittersweet tubéki dénes

Upon invitation visiting the renewed performance of the “BitterSweet” at the National House of Traditions on Friday, April, 26. 2024. … venue: District I., 8. Corvin Square – Budapest.

This Transylvanian Anthology of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble is one of the products of a lengthy artistic process that aims to examine the relevance and significance of our traditional culture in present-day life. This dramatic performance interprets folklore in a contemporary manner and mixes it boldly with modern dramatic forms. The ensemble and the dancers preserve archaic music and folk values found in historical Hungary.

The BitteSweet is a drama of contrasts: it counterpoints the tragic and the comic, the joy and the sorrow, life and death, confronting the audience with the crucial questions of how to maintain our inherited values in an increasingly globalised society. It seeks a means of preserving our native cultural community that in turn preserves our identity in the chaotic multiplicity of 21st-century life.

According to the formulation the BitterSweet is a drama of contrasts … it is about micro human lives, which sometimes evokes dramatic, other times lighter, moments that affect the depth of the soul, i.e. it describes life.

There were several arguments in favor of the renovation of BitterSweet (Édeskeserű) so stated Gábor Mihályi – Director-choreographer in addition to wanting to introduce the performance to young people, it was also an important aspect that the new generation of dancers should experience its staging. Fifteen years ago, when Édeskeserű was staged, visuality was also of utmost importance, recognizing that the audience is no longer necessarily satisfied with the succession of beautiful dances and music remembered but the performance has not lost its relevance.

The BitterSweet (Édeskeserű) performance … due to its title … is a dance poem based on the eternal tension of opposite forces, reflecting the individual vision of the creators, which rhapsodically counterpoints the comic with the tragic, life with death, joy with sorrow, reflects on the arrangement of Pál István Szalonna – Deputy Director General, artistic director,

The dramatic dance game choreographed to the song. We could also see very good rhythmic and dynamic male solo dances with very high jumps from the excellent young men, who not only clapped their palms together, but did not spare the thighs, bootlegs, and even the outer and inner ankles with their palms. There was not a single lost or rhythmically lagging step in the dance together. Their applause always clapped together, giving an excellent rhythm to the dance, much to the delight of the enthusiastically applauding audience. Finally, they closed the show with very, very temperamental dance from Kalotaszeg.

Ladies and Men characteristic dances of the different regions in wonderful authentic folk costumes, was eyescatching great dancing … the audience thanked the excellent singers, musicians and dancers with a standing ovation.

Further details of a/m show and up coming on the House of Tradition website.
