A mystery play coming to life in a tomb and the Zsolnay Quarter behind the scenes at the Cultural Heritage Days A medieval mystery play coming to life in the shadow of 1700-year-old tombs; the legendary life of design icon Eva Zeisel, born 120 years ago; and the Zsolnay Quarter behind the scenes: on the 19th September and the 20 th this year, the Cella Septichora Visitor Center in Pécs and the Zsolnay Quarter await visitors with extremely exciting, unusual programs on the occasion of the Cultural Heritage Days. On the occasion of the celebration of the Hungarian built and intellectual heritage, the two most significant cultural venues in Pécs will not only reveal memories of the past, but also offer an unforgettable experience for lovers of art, history and theater. A musical inner journey underground: the play “Whoever” at the Cella Septichora During the Cultural Heritage Days weekend, those who visit the World Heritage Cella Septichora Visitor Center can witness a unique theatrical experience. On September 19, they can see the musical-puppet morality play “Whoever”. The text of the performance, staged by playwright-director Khaled-Abdo Szaida, is built from medieval mystery plays, works of ancient philosophers and poems by 20th-century Hungarian poets. The play invites you to a profound inner journey about the meaning of life, faith, true values and transience: what will accompany us when the time of final reckoning comes? The unique performance, interwoven with street theater elements, puppets and live music, reflects exactly the religious and cultural diversity that the early Christian monuments of Pécs have preserved for centuries. Attention: Due to the atmosphere and capacity of the venue, tickets are strictly limited!
The Playful Seeker of Beauty and Behind the Scenes of the Quarter in the Zsolnay Quarter, the Apostolic Hall of the Zsolnay Quarter is preparing for the weekend with two fascinating performances and an exclusive thematic walk related to them.
On the 19. September (Saturday) 4 p.m. – The Playful Seeker of Beauty: The Life of Eva Zeisel: 120 years ago, the Hungarian-born, world-famous designer, Stricker Amália (Eva Zeisel), was born. Dr. Piroska Novák PhD – design and art theorist, and chief museologist of the Museum of Applied Arts of the Hungarian National Museum Public Collection Center, pays tribute to her charismatic personality, adventurous life and ageless, ergonomic-organic objects.
Following the presentation, participants can take a guided tour of Eva Zeisel’s iconic works at the Family and Factory History Exhibition, as well as at the temporary exhibition Revived Light – Contemporary Zsolnay Eozines.
Next day 20th of September (Sunday) 3 p.m. – How did industrial ruins become a cultural paradise? What was the area of the Zsolnay factory like before the 2010 European Capital of Culture project, and how did it become one of the most popular meeting places in Pécs? István Komor will share previously unheard behind-the-scenes stories and exciting anecdotes about the birth of the Zsolnay Quarter in his presentation. After the presentation, from 4.30 p.m. tour guide Gordana Gyurok will accompany visitors on a walk through the Quarter.
