In March 2026, fans and media are celebrating the 40th anniversary of Depeche Mode’s landmark 1986 album, Black Celebration. Even deeper into the defining songs of Depeche Mode’s oeuvre. The song selection is focused and tight, while preserving the personal, emotional power of the music, and the familiar Depeche Mode sound is put into a new light, approaching the original works with sincere enthusiasm.
The 2026 concept … Every sound comes close to the audience. The symphony orchestra and the 45-member male choir unfold in their full layering, this is a unique formation in Hungary. The nuances of the songs are clearer and more powerful.
Consciously reach back to the creative era when Depeche Mode had already found its own musical identity, but at the same time boldly experimented with sound. From this period, the defining songs were born, which still have an elemental impact on the audience today.
The album of the same name is 40 years old this year, so “Black Celebration” is not just a working title, but a tribute to an iconic era.
The performance focuses more on the power of the male choir and symphonic voice harmonizing with the industrial sound. The repertoire includes cult pieces from the Black Celebration, Music for the Masses and Violator eras. The instrumentation changes dynamically … sometimes the male choir and vocals come to the fore, sometimes the orchestral sound dominates, and then the joint performance creates the highlights of the evening.
Conductor Richárd Riederauer said ‘Q’ “This is not a “reworking” in the classical sense. With the help of the symphony orchestra and the male choir, we illuminate the deeper layers of Depeche Mode’s music. It’s like looking at something we already know from a new angle … so new details become visible. This is the only way to preserve the original character and not force anything on their music
